I took a big 6months break from making music because of moving to different city for work. And everyday since I took a break, there is a guilt inside of me saying why I am not making music like I used to(I work 10hour shift now to support fam). When I open my brand Instagram, I see people having releases and growing, which lowkey making me more in guilt and sad from inside. It's like a big heart break feeling. And now after some months, when I try to make music, i can't make much progress. I feel like i fell down the ladder that I was climbing and everyone who was behind me got more far than me. And this feeling is taking over me and pushing me more back that I can't even make anything on the DAW. Please help. Any suggestions you can have for me to get me back on track.
Eh, as an ambitious soul that wants to pursue many paths simultaneously (soundtrack composing, solo projects in more than one genres, sound design work, guitar player) and on the other hand doesn't want to abandon any of them for good, coming back and forth about actively doing music stuff is my biggest struggle. When life crashes down on me regularly with a corporate job to make a living, social activities, having to take care of unwanted health issues and enjoying simple things to numb the brain, it is really easy to fall into weeks-long breaks from doing anything creative/ambitious like practising/composing, because the urge to just relax instead of grinding that musicianship after a long and stressful day is hard to dismiss and comforting. And yeah, my love-hate relationship isn't helpful either, when sitting down to projects is both exciting and overwhelming in my head, since I cannot shake the feeling of returning with even less skill than previously, and instead of progressing I fill my free time with struggling to get back on track and not push it further, because there's so much stuff You discover in the meantime, that You end up splitting focus on dozen things, each of requiring 100s of hours to progress through. But other than that, It's all fun 'n games 😄
Hey Shutara, I understand that feeling. And sometimes, being overwhelmed can cause frustration and procrastination that stop us from writing great music. The most important thing is you get back and still do your thing. You could relate to episode 97 where I laid out 5 of my essential strategies to defeat overwhelm. Hope that helps and I'll be happy to hear from you soon! 🙂
@@FinishMoreMusic I'll finally have some free time over the next few days/weeks to sit down after work and re-calibrate towards music again, so hopefully this + Ep97 will help me to get back on track more seamlessly. Thanks so much for the response, I appreciate it a lot. Will definitely check in again soon 😌
