Love the mechanic of allowing the player to choose heads or tails. Instead of it happening behind the scenes you get to chose. If you chose wrong, it's your own fault *technically.
I alternate (opposite of what it was last time), and if it gets multiple of heads in a row I keep picking tails.. just statistically more likely to be tails.... Eventually 😭 2 heads in a row stats = 1/5 x 1/5, = 1/25

The situation you find yourself in for Fear and Hunger, a lot of it would come down to luck I feel. A lot of games have it to where you uncontestably come out on top with little to no doubts. Fear and Hunger does a good job of making you helpless but giving you that little glimmer of hope... like the very coin you flip to determine your fate
(Aside from saving) coin tosses are actually good for novice players or to do risky tactics, since most coin flips attacks have foreshadowing, you can just guard to instantly succeed it. But novice players won't know about the foreshadowing, so maybe they will live and learn, or sometimes, even if you guard, there's still an arm with Hack coming down on you, so you risk it all to chop it off, or even go for the head, and put it all behind that coin toss.

Most enemies at the start (Guards, gnomes, hounds, the tentacle basement monsters) all inflict terrible status effects that bypass guards. However, in the sequel, the worst the villagers can cause is an infection. Which is still bad, but termina also has a lot more green herbs in the starting area, so it's not that bad. So there are a lot of instances where guarding is not just a good move, it's intuitive, because you also get rewarded for stalling with the Rev up mechanic, letting you guard and do a stronger attack, or attack twice.

In the beginning I used to stress myself out over picking heads or tails. Turns out the moment I stopped giving all the fucks I could give and just pick heads forever, helped me the most.
Tbf when you worry about it at first, you usually are less experienced in the game so you have more to lose, then when you don't care, you can consistently get back to where you were without the same amount of struggle regardless.
Its amazing how accurate this is. You just see the coin flip then think to yourself, "Fuck". Though I have a system that I keep picking one side until I win then I switch until I win and repeat. Its cause if a coin flips twice probability is that it will land on each side once so if I were to pick one and win it'll likely land on the other face so I pick that, or if I pick one that loses chances are that it'd land on the same face next time. It sounds stupid I'll admit, and there were times I lost 5 tosses in a row, but I noticed a not insignificant uptick in luck after I did this.
Its not monty hall, thats got a bit more of what youre describing. That problem hinges on a possible switch where switching after one option is removed is always favorable. Flipping a coin and swapping between the options every time to better your odds is lunacy.
