  • The Durango and Silverton’s Locomotive K37 #493 makes a Shakedown Run "With Tonnage" to Cascade Canyon on 1/31/2020.
This digital file opens with K28 #476 departing with the Cascade Canyon Express. Once in the clear hitcraftK37 #493 backs to its train and leaves the yard. I pace it at over 23MPH up the valley, capture it coming and going at Hermosa, working the grade at the Hwy 550 over pass and leaving Rockwood for Cascade Canyon It pulled 8 coaches (Tonnage) and as you will see it ran “Perfect”.
It was a busy week for the Durango & Silverton Railroad with rebuilt locomotive K37 #493 “Coming Out” of the roundhouse for the first time in 52 years under its own power and several light and with tonnage shakedown runs. The D&S employees performed a multi-year, multi-million dollar rebuild and conversion to burn oil. The conversion to burn oil will reduce the risk of starting fires during dry conditions. The 493 was originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902 as standard gauge and converted to narrow gauge in 1928 by the D&RGW Denver Burnham Shops. The locomotive was retired by the D&RGW in 1968 and was purchased and moved to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1981. It sat outside on display in Silverton for 20 years.
