During the winter months, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs a shorter trip to Cascade Canyon, often with one of the K-28 steam locomotives as power. In this video you'll see K-28 #476 pulling the Cascade Canyon Winter Train during a heavy snowstorm. The next day #476 was again headed to Cascade, this time pulling a Flanger Extra up the Animas River Valley in order to clear the line.

Exquisite beauty and videography. The snow falling from the tree branches … beautiful. The plaintive whistle as she chugs through the snow … no sweeter sound. Nothing better.
Thanks for posting! We actually rode engine 476 august of that year. Awesome experience, we highly recommend it!
What amazing scenes. It was a joy to watch this! That deep snow was giving the ol' girl a workout! Thanks for the video!
I like that the engineer doesn't mumble on the whistle, sounding the signals with clarity as the rulebook requires. He even uses Long-Short and three Short correctly!
Can't get enough of these snowy days on the D&S!
There is something magical about a steam locomotive puffing smoke and steam into the cold winter air with snow all around. Great video!
As impressive as the visuals are, the sound is equally important. Never scrimp on steam train sound. Go for the best !!
Eisenbahn-Videos, das ist etwas für des alten Josefs Herz. Danke fürs Hochladen und herzliche Grüße aus Wien.
Respect(!!) on getting out and shooting in such conditions! No cosy cab ride for you! And your knowledge of where to set up led to some really nice angles and locations. Great work!!! Love the timing of 476's mournful whistle at 3:34 , the vehicles coming up to the road crossing 6:24 and snow falling off the branch at 7:43! A really terrific production all round!! Thanks for sharing this!
Watching this -again- Christmas morning in England .Real Christmas Railroad Film.Wonderfull sound and sights.
Steam in the snow!!! what could be better than this! Great video...thank you for the post!!
I quite agree! ❄️
Well done for braving the snow and very cold weather!

Great sounding Pennsy 3 chime whistle!
Will ride train in Jan 2023! Can't wait....I hope it will be snowing since we don't have snow in Houston, TX 🥰.
Excellent shots in the snow!
What an awesome video. Enjoyed the plowing of the rails. Excellent photography. Keep this coming. Enjoyed very much. 🥀👍👏👏

I mean they are so memorable trains 🤗🤗🤗
Beautiful video! Thanks for sharing.
The best D&SR video I've seen. Great locations. Well shot and perfect exposure in that snowy landscape
Beautiful Video!
We did this trip a few years ago, great scenery... Sit in the presidential car, last 2 tables (seats 11-14) for cocktails and easy in/out to outdoor platform, no obstructed view off the back...
Both my grandfathers had a love affair with the steam engine. Both born in the late 1800s. I must do this Durango/ Silverton someday. 2nd gen, I'm here in Colorado to this day, and likely to the end of my life.
Perhaps in winter, when it's not inundated...
great footage
That is a great video. Thank you
Brought to you in beautiful 720p!
How 'bout some 4K???
I loved it. I wish I could take a ride.

There's nothing like a freshly plowed ROW.
Great video Thanks for sharing..... Frank 🌴
I was reading a Rio Grande Southern book when it mentioned a "Priest's Flanger " on engine 42. Originally a Denver and Rio Grande Class 70 2-8-0. When I did a Google search on "Priest's Flanger" to find out how one worked it brought up your amazing video. But I still have the question : Has anyone ever heard of a Priest's flanger, and how does it work?
Superb !
Fun fact 476 is one of the 3 remaining K-28’s all owned by the D&SNGRR
The oldest train on this line, besides 473. They are sisters.
Narrow gauge regards of agreement as well.
476 should wear 478's whistle and 480 should wear that Lunkenheimer 3 Chime.
Nice Video but it isn't a snow storm when I can see the train clearly all the time 😂😁😁😁😁
Sounds like a PRR 3 Chime
Hey at least you have some video proof that a Durango coal-train used to exist...
"You'll need your Snow Plough, Thomas!" Are you familiar with that story in your part of the world?!! Anyway, great video thank you!
I haven't seen 1 railfan here in America that hasn't seen that story. It's kinda become part of my generation's lore
Super top
Delightful! Some of your vantage points are amazing. Are they all on route 550?
Hope those cars had heaters.
Which country is this and from where to where this train goes
8:30 Gorgeous
예술 이다.
I wish you guys would take up donations for a good 4k camera. I know I would donate! Especially if you guys posted a trip or two a week! That would be awesome. Maybe even a 4k VR/360 camera?
Real Royal places Dan New York 👎👈😃😄😀😍
What are the pieces of hardware on the roofs of the railcars? Been on the DSNG several times but this is the first time I've noticed them. Looks like some sort of antenna.
Pipes used for filling the water tanks I believe.
Gorgeous videos, they remind my childhood.👍👍👍
👌👍
