Actually, in some top hospitals or medical center here, Ortho and Neuro departments fight for spine patients so bad that even cause political crisis in the hospital. There's so much profit when it comes to spine surgeries, and since both Ortho and Neuro could handle them, noone would give away such great moneymakers
Same in my medical school too, these guys often post intern/resident 24 hour in ER too grab spine case😂😂😂. Personally I think ortho shouldn't allow to do Spine. Because spine is really sensitive area and need delicacy with tissue and spine oncology and meningomyolecele are handled better by them even the area above C7 are done by them and when things get complicated neurosurgeon are called. Orthopedics tends to damage the patients and refers to other speciality for management when they fail😂😂😂
neurosurgery is not included in standard salary surveys. They actually have their own nationwide survey and in order to get the results you have to pay about $2,000 for these salary survey results. In 2014 the data from this survey shows an overall mean salary of $812,079, median of $670,100, and 90th percentile average of $1,417,038. Once again this was 2014, so it's likely much higher now. Also private practice mean was $924,426 and academic mean was $675,521. Again, this is the salary survey taken by NERVES in their 2014 report for the year of 2013. Taking call was about $3,000/night and $1,700 for general call, and $2,400 for trauma call. I think neurosurgery data is hard to find by google because this organization works really hard to get the most accurate data and they charge a lot for the results. No survey on google has the real neurosurgery results. But look up NERVES Survey and you will see what I mean.
Hi, Thanks for the message. That's a good question! When I was in medical school, one of my renal instructors stopped a lecture he was giving and told us this story: there is so much information to learn in medical school and trying to learn it all is like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. He went on say that as you learn all the information, it is like throwing mud on the wall. Some of the mud is going to stick (what you remember) but most of it is going to fall off the wall (what you forget). In order to get more of this mud stuck to the wall, you have to keep forcing it to stick. The way to accomplish this is to review the information over and over and in different review formats. For me, I'm more of a audio and visual learner so I like to listen to the lectures as I'm doing chores or working out, and I also enjoy watching videos such as on RUclips on various topics that I need clarification on. I also use note cards to get the small details down like for pharmacology or microbiology. But, in general it requires you to have a rigid plan of what you are going to study each day and what days you are going to review leading up to the exam. A lot of it comes with experience over the years and believe it or not, I am still trying to perfect my study strategies. You have to be dynamic bc you will always have to adjust depending on what you need to study and how much time you have to do it. I hope this helps and good luck! Dear Dr Webb, an Orthopedic Spine surgeon ruined my life. My surgery was supposed to be an invasive decompression of a herniated disk. I've heard a lot of medical students talk about depression, that during your time in medical school some people do succumb to depression because it is a really difficult and lonely path. i was wondering if you had any tips on dealing with that? even as a pre med now i have days when i do feel alone. 2.) do you have tips on how to manage a healthy balance between your important studies & family? is there even a healthy balance? i understand you have to make sacrifices, some of my family members at this point have a hard time understanding that, I'm not quite sure what to do. 3.) lastly, do you think being in relationships prior/during medical school is worth it? maybe not relationships, but more on the terms of dating? my dad keeps telling me to just focus on my studies and not date, what do you think? is it a waste of time? thank you so much for your time, sorry for the many questions!
