Before my grandpa died, he had Alzheimer’s really bad. When he looked in a mirror he thought he was seeing his brother and started talking to his reflection.

I'm in my twenties and have been suffering from amnesia two times. Here is what I learned: You don't have to feel sorry for the people that loose their memory. One can still be happy in the moment, without knowing where or who one is. I can vaguely remember that during the period of my amnesia, I was making jokes and I was laughing. So if you ever meet a person that has Alzheimer, just try to make that person feel good. There is still quality in such a life.

If you don’t mind me asking, what is it like having amnesia? And what are some things that may cause it?
@@z.tuv1 I have thought quiet long about how to convey this feeling. Maybe picture it like this:
1. I assume you read this in your apartment on your computer. Now imaging that a split second afterwords, you'd be sitting at a train station. You'd be thinking: 'How the hell did I end up here???', and immediately try to trace back your last actions or ask for help. But amnesia does not feel like that, it feels more like this:
2. Assuming you read this in your apartment at your computer, but a split second afterwards, you sit at a train station - but with a half-eaten sandwich in your hand, chewing. You'd know immediately know that your brain is not functioning properly. The most terrifying thing is the mental power that one spends to try to recover one's memories, without any success.
That being said - it is really important that people without memory get the feeling that they are being taken care of. Plus, they can still be happy in the moment. Tell them a joke that they love. You can do it a hundred times, it will still be good.

My grandma has moderate to advanced dementia. At first it started out with Grandma saying "Oh what is the word I'm trying to think of again?" Minor stuff. This was 2 years ago. I have been a care giver for a while as well. Over the last 6 months I have had the honor of working at the same memory care facility my grandma is at. I am so glad I get to help take care of her and make sure she is ok. Now her dementia looks so much different. It has gotten to the point where every day she asks me "Am I staying in this room tonight? I have 4 others just like it." No matter how much I explain she only has one room, she always doubts it. A lot of the time she also believes that her son just leaves "the boys" with her. And that she never knows where they are. She asks me most days "Have you seen the boys? I just had them but they are hiding now. I can't believe he (her son) keeps doing this." She also tells me she has hallucinations of bugs crawling on her, and of a man crawling into bed with her every night. He doesn't say or do anything and just vanishes after a bit. He does not resemble anyone She ever knew. She isn't scared but calls him a "ghost." Sometimes it is as if she knows her thoughts are just fabrications, but sometimes she is convinced they are real. She is the sweetest lady and it breaks my heart seeing her go through so much stress. She recently told me that "nothing feels real anymore." I can imagine the feeling is unparalleled.

My Grandpa has been diagnosed with dementia. So I've been trying to learn about this. Many of my family members have suffered with Alzheimer's. My grandpa is probably the closest person I know, and it scares me that one day he's gonna forget somethings. I've imagined what it'll feel that he would forget about me. I feel scared and sad.I usually make stupid jokes when I comment, sometimes I would just bully people. I've never expessed my feelings in my comments, I do expect people to make fun of me. My grandpa was in prison for two or so years before he was diagnosed. I would spend time with him all the time when I was little, I would do everything with him he was my best friend. Over time I didn't spend as much time with him, I moved across the country I made new friends. I moved back and moved to my dad (my parents are divorced). I went to a new school. It's been a while scene I have seen him, but I eventually move back with my mom. My mom lives with my grandpa I spend more time with him, my grandpa would spoil me. I would do everything with him, I would talk to him, watch movies, eat together nothing could stop us. My grandpa was a drug dealer and people wanted his money. People would try to kill him when he was younger, so his health isn't really good due to his gun/ stab wounds. My grandpa couldn't do as much things as normal 60 year olds can, my grandpa would struggle trying to pick up things, walking, carry things, going down the stairs, etc. I would help him with these things, it make me feel bad seeing him do these things. I would help him with those things, I expected him to live a regular life. After I heard him get diagnosed I searched up about dementia, and I was shocked and worried. I feel like I have a limited-time with him. He's my only grandpa due to my other grandpa dying in 92'. I try to spend as much time as I have with him. I pray for families struggling with loved ones with dementia. I pray for y'all.

I know what your going through I recently lost my grandma who had dementia she had it for almost 5 years I lost my best friend and a second mom to me but I’m happy she is in a new home with my grandpa
My grandpa also has dementia,its bad,his movement is still fine,just as slow as any other 80y old.But the memorie loss is terrible,we were eating and after finishing the pie he asked "when will i get a slice"...but it is nice that he remembers everything normally that was before his diagnosis.
I have no clue why, but dementia really upsets me a lot compared to other things equally as tragic, I don't even know anyone effected by it.

My grandfather was recently diagnosed with dementia at 88 years old. We are heartbroken as a family... he was always the absolute sharpest man up top so this really came as a shock to us. It seems to be progressing very quickly, and he is now convinced that my grandmother, his wife of almost 60 years, is having an affair with another man. He really believes this and now treats her horribly. I really don't know which is worse - seeing my grandfather gradually disappear or watching my grandmother live in pain, loneliness and sadness. COVID has kept them isolated from the world (like many). What a horrible thing, I would not wish it upon anyone.
Dementia is not the name of a particular disease, but the name of a large group of symptoms (syndrome). Some people call dementia “forgetting disease”, but dementia is not just another name for forgetting, it also has many other symptoms - difficulty remembering new things, unable to understand logic, hesitating to interact with people, Unable to do normal work, difficult to handle my emotions, personality changes, etc

Something to bare in mind is you don't have to be incredibly old to develop dementia. I work at a care home and we've had multiple people in their 50s and 60s come in, though they *usually* only stay for a short period of time, like a week or two while their husband/wife has some time off taking care of them.
I really appreciate this video and the fact that Iwan is doing this. More people should know about the disease

One exercise I believe to help short term memory, which is the first memory to lose. Out of a deck of 70 ish cards I went from remembering only 3 words random words to remembering 7 words. I'm hoping this can help people as my grandmother died from Alzheimer's and it was a sad sight.

Dementia is such a horrible thing to watch a loved one deal with. It’s just so sad watching them slowly lose their mind. I hope no one ever has to watch a loved one go through having dementia. Idk if it’s even possible but I hope one day maybe they can find a cure or something to prevent dementia an other diseases like it that people usually get when they get older. Watching your parents or grandparents who always seemed like a super hero to you growing up get weak an lose their ability to control their body an mind is a feeling that’s so horrible I can’t even really describe what it’s like to go through having to take care of someone that’s dealing with things like that an watching them slowly wither away.

My grandmother suffered a head injury after a fall when someone ran into her with a pallet jack at the grocery store. She developed dementia and passed away about a year later. It was horrible seeing her go from a lucid old lady cracking jokes and very kind to everybody to a shell of a human in such a short time. You can see in their eyes, the person who used to look at you with warmth now views you as a stranger with suspicion and hostility, they are no longer there. If someone comes in saying they're your grandson, but you have no memory of them, wouldnt you think they were suspicious?

You know It got me thinking, having studied psychology at Alison Institute in Ireland and having attained my Diploma in Psychology their, I can say that Psychologically our character is generally a build up and composition of developmental psychology that our environments and people around us have shaped us into, this developmental psychology continues throughout our entire lives to continually, (together with personal choices) mold us into our older and more matured selves. With dementia, have your whole life in some cases scrubbed from your memory would make us no more than an infant toddler again. For those that have experienced a painful life it could be a blessing to them, for those that have had a happy and fruitful life it would obviously be a disaster................many of us try so hard to educate and grow ourselves into becoming more knowledgeable and wise human beings only in some cases to have it stripped away, but not just that we also have the deep love we feel from long established relationships stripped away from us where we no longer feel love towards the one's we cared about as we have no memories to support that love. Dementia is an evil and cruel disease. I hope one day humanity see's a day where this affliction upon our specie is nothing but what it stood for a lost memory in life's existence.

My grandfather was diagnosed with dementia when he was 53, he's 60 now
My grandpa has dementia, and it is very bad.. he could harshly hit someone for just saying no. And he makes a huge mess like throwing toothpaste all around, eating a soap bar and even talking to pictures the last time I remember properly talking to him was probably when I was 5 or 6 idk I just feel sad for my younger siblings that didn’t even get a chance to play or actually do anything with him for them he will always be like that. I am just grateful I atleast got to have fun with him for 3-4 years. It makes me cry even thinking of how jolly and great of a person he was and now look at him..

i can't remember where/how/when i got some of my memories. Is there something wrong with my brain? Like i ask myself "how did i ever know that?" "I don't remember knowing that thing".
The brain is a very complex organ. If I were you I would not be concerned. Forgetfulness especially over events from the past is very common and mixing such thoughts and being unable to link them to specific origins is a fairly normal issue for many people. If you think about dreams that is our brain trying to sort our memories out and log them effectively.

My grandma suffered Alzheimer dementia before she died. She slept on the carpet, thinking that it was her bed, she was talking to the mirror at night time, she always tried to get out of the house, and got very irritated at my cousins, mostly at me. Only 2 of her daughters and her son were remember by her. She kicked me and my mother out 2 times and one day we were forced to sedate her because she screamed for no reason. Eventually she died in the morning of Christmas. Dementia sure is awful, I do not wish anyone to get it.
