  • January 17 marks the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation and the imprisonment of Hawai'i's last sovereign ruler, Queen Lili'uokalani. This thoughtful program celebrates Queen Lili‘uokalani’s legacy though the songs she composed. Amy Ku‘uleialoha Stillman and Manu Ikaika talk about this rich history. The local cultural group, Halau Ho`omau I Ka Wai Ola O Hawai`i, perform music and dance.
This performance is presented in conjunction with the National Museum of the American Indian's provocative new exhibition "E Mau Ke Ea: The Sovereign Hawaiian Nation," on view though January 2017 in Washington, D.C. Learn more about the exhibition at www.nmai.si.edu/explore/exhibi....
This performance was webcast live and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on January 30, 2016.

I am happy to see channels like this teaching the true history and culture of our indigenous peoples. Hawaii is a treasure and this treasure must be remembered, always.

What is the name of the song starting at 21.15? Lovely melody and beautiful but sad English translated lyrics.

That mele that was secretly sent out in installments and published in the Hawaiian newspaper is "He Inoa Wehi no Kalanianaole." It was never published as a song (with the mele, or lyrics, and the music), so as the speaker Aunty Amy says, they first put them together for performance in 2001, and I donʻt think anyone has recorded it, so this is probably a rare occasion to hear it.
