Tourists from around Japan have been flocking to a tiny fishing community, to see what has been nicknamed Cat Island.
The 22 humans who live on Aoshima, off Ehime prefecture, are greatly outnumbered by a population over of 120 cats.

My guess is that the islands are because the respective organisms (cats, rabbits) are cut-off from landmasses that could potentially have predators that would keep them in check. As far as those islands are concerned, the cats/rabbits are an invasive species, no different from finding a pigeon (C. livia) in New York City.
They call it Cat Island. The Japanese fishing community where cats outnumber people by more than five to one.

Updated information about Aoshima.
In 2018, there were 6 humans and over 200 cats (these humans are elderly. About 14 humans died or left the island due to sickness since this video was made in 2015).
On one day in 2018, three vet doctors and some volunteers worked together and neutered /spayed over 170 cats. They hope that they can better control the cat population so that it’s easier to evacuate with cats at a natural disaster. It looks like they are receiving help such as cat food from outside of the island as well.

Some cats are injured and sick. Some cats don't even get any food cause other cats are hogging it. I feel like they should get better taken care of. It's sad to see some cats fight for the amount of food.

To be honest:
The cats needs to be checked by a vet. I am one myself! I hope someone in Japan decides to pay them a visit, check the health of these cats and maybe build their own mini clinic in that island.

They also receive a Christmas gift of a flea and tick medicine called Frontline.

I'd be very interesting in hearing more about the ecology of the island. For example, with the abundance of cats, wouldn't you think that there'd be more potential predators of cats, as well? Something like a sufficiently-sized hawk or owl wouldn't have a limited food supply here. Not to mention how there's the factor that we're discussing an island here, so the only other organisms that could play into the island's ecology would either be already endemic to the island, or wander over, such as by flight. But even that latter scenario depends on how far away this island is from other islands that could carry flight-capable species, such as various insects and birds.
