The island has a circumference of 4.2 km and is home to several hundred cats.
The only way to get to the island is by passenger boat, "Aoshima," which makes two trips a day. There are no guest houses, stores, or vending machines on the island.

this is an introvert's dream right there.. while going to the island you could listen to some music with airpods and appreciate the view.. then you can stay beside more than 100 cats while feeding them without much noise (i'm an introvert, that's why i love japan and its culture, someday i'll go to japan (:

Its kind of the same as the situation with the Dodo Bird. A perfect island where there are no apex predators for cats. They probably keep the rodent population down to a minimum.

It would be nice to have a film or something of the island use the proceeds to get a veterinarian in there and give the cats much needed medical attention.
@@wolvar6933 these cats don't look that bad, all things considered. I feed a colony of 4-5 cats and they have more obvious problems, because they live around a lot of garbage. Ive tried to get them some veterinary care, but they are still too wary of humans and difficult to trap. It can be frustrating, but I respect their lifestyle.😺😸
Getting them fixed ( the Japanese ones) would certainly cut down the overpopulation problem. The colony I feed never have kittens, but that might be because they are all females.
@@hobbes4583 they are fixed look at their ears are clipped. That’s the way they mark ferals that are fixed already by clipping the ear corner off.
I came to Aoshima Island about 5 years ago with my son, my son has lived in Japan for 14 years.
It was a lovely experience to feed and pat the cats. I am coming to Japan next week, so I will try to come to Aoshima again. Love from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️ 🐈🐾

I needed this. It's been almost two years ago that I lost my BEAUTIFUL silver tabby Musya who'd been with me for 14 years...
I just adore cats . The calm graceful way they move. Also the silly curiosity they all seem to have.
I've yet to see a call stray. Of course I live near mean people so that's likely why the strays I feed are slow to trust humans. Took a year of feeding 2 of the 5 for 2 to warm up to me and let me give pets and hand fed treats
yeah, my long cousin brad rodgersons used to literally catch the strays and rescues from all around the town and he would clean them all and the whole cats at a time hed cook rotisserie over a fire in the field by the woods acrosse the alley. thats how the cops caught him. nothing happened they were just freaked out. laws was different in them days.

There should be some rules to the tourist at the island.
1. Put the food on the plate or clean area. Don't simply put on the ground or sands area. They cannot digest the small rock.
2. There should be specific feeding area

Some of the cats look like they need some veterinary attention but I’m so glad that people care enough to come feed these kitties. I adore cats and this is what my heaven looks like, surrounded by cats 😊

I am from Finland rural area farm. We always had cats. Not are they good as company and friendly to humans and good as pets and family members. But they take care of the homestead as well (if you are too lazy hooman). Never had any problems with rats or mice or creepy crawlies at all. Silver Fish or Mouse infestation?... They'll clean it right out. Cats takes care of the home. Dogs guard it. ;)

Thank you for this video. My daughter will be visiting Japan as it is her dream to visit the very dignified people of Japan. I'm getting older now and not in great health. Maybe in my next life I will get to visit Japan. Yes, cats and people are very similar. Sometimes they are best buddies and other times they are fighting for no particular reason just because they feel their territory is being invaded. Many of those kitties are elderly. Low weight, scruffy coats and missing fur on their faces. I see many in the comment section saying they are sick. Nope just old. Surprised more people don't live on the island. In the States, having an Island home is a dream for many. Especially one that is only an hr ferry ride away.
Thank you for your comment. You are right, all cats are aging. I think the residents have made a very wise decision. In fact, it would be very difficult for them to live on the island. We will see what happens in the future.
@Assingment MAT Yes that is a big part of it. Many of the younger folks don't even want to live in the rural villages. So many of these cute villages are pretty much abandoned, only a handful of the elderly are left and when they pass on, their kids dont want the family farms and just walk away and abandon it. I heard Japan is basically giving these abandoned houses away for free in the countryside. A few youtube channels are about getting some of these houses and fixing them up. One woman is an American. So my guess they are allowing foreigners to acquire them as well.
@ponpon The one lady that has a channel rehabbing one of these homes is from New York, she just worked in Japan. She sold her apt in New York to live in Japan permanently in the free house. So there must be other ways.
@@y-mefarm4249those places usually need a lot of work, are far from any city or village. They’re not just giving places away for free. Those RUclips channels aren’t giving you the full details on what you need to do to acquire those places. You want to check with the Japanese channels who give a lot more info into those “deals”. For foreigners, it might work out better for us, but we still have to learn the language, acquire the specific visas to live here. As an American living here, we’ve looked into this and there’s a lot that goes into it.

This is so AWESOME! What a cool place to visit. Thank you for posting this. It was beautiful, and also educational. I wish they had a place like this in every single state in the United States. An open space for visitors and tourists, but also residents that help feed and take care of them. It would be so much better than some of the shelters currently up and running. No cages. If I ever go to Japan, this place is now on my bucket list.

This is a beautiful thing to have an island just for cats. While most look healthy there are some that look too skinny. I also see signs of eye infections and flea infestation in some of the cats. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to ensure that all cats are healthy and disease down to a minimum. When I am able I will donate. Many prayers of blessings and good health for the cats and those who care for them!

My question is: how did the cats get there and why is no one there who takes their health seriously. Almost all of them I saw had dental problems or problems with their tail, eyes, skin (nose) and the muscles of a few were nonexistent bc of disease…. I would be very careful to not touch their teeth bc. most are infected with a common dental disease through a lack of gum care

Thank you for the candid exploration of Aoshima! It is so nice to wander around with your steady camera and commentary. I like to think cats are similar to people as well. We do not need each other so much as we coexist, enjoying each other's company. Cats are respectable, intelligent, and moody, just like us.
Japan has so many quiet, beautiful corners full of history. I hope to visit in the next few years.

The orange cats doing orange cat things starting fights hahah glad to see most kitties are quite chonky, not going hungry. The island got a bit more run down after some bad weather and lockdown I think 😔 I hope it will be back to beautiful soon

Had to stop watching after the quiet cat on the bench still couldn't get a chance to eat after he patiently waited. Made me cry. I wanna visit this cat island one day but it might make me cry too.
I just imagine in the new age, when people are better, life is stable, and access to one’s needs are available, there might be a tiger island with the same energy as this.
