- No I didn't go to Film school but yes I did get kick out of the college of engineering at the univeristy of Missouri- Columbia, no I didn't know I wanted to do filmmaking, yes It was predestined.
Here's how I became a filmmaker Storytime pt. 1. College Explusion to Succesful Filmmaker
I never know that I would ever be a filmmaker. Some people grow up knowing that's what they always wanted to do, to make movies, other's grabbed a camera at a young age. Honestly it was just in my purpose for me to find this craft. I always had a natural hack and God redirected my path so that I could be in front of you all today! I went through a lot to get here so hopefully my store resonates, inspires and motivates you all to keep going.

This was a really great motivator for me. I’m moving 1,300 miles away from home next month and I’ve been fearing the change and the idea of “failing” in a new environment with no connections. But hearing stories like yours helps me understand that the change can be vital for my growth 🙏

"fulfilling a dream that's new to my family" I felt this so hard :' currently in film school and it took me a while to get here. Embracing the pivot is also key! I had to take a gap year to save up to pay for school and have enough to move away from most of my family for a while. Gonna start my second year in the fall and take a cinematography course, very excited about it! Always interesting how progress is never a straight line
I was laid off earlier this year and have no interest in returning to corporate America. As a creative, working in that environment was so draining and unfulfilling. I'm trying to get my small business and creative pursuits off the ground which has been a very intimidating experience (not to mention the added financial insecurity). God has taught me a lot throughout this time, and I really just need to go ahead and take that full leap of faith. It'll all work out in the end. Thanks for sharing your story -- it was really encouraging to hear!

I have the same similar story, but I was getting a Recording Arts Degree in Music and was a songwriter. The surprise was that they was teaching me how to Mix, Sound Design, And Master films. Fell in Love ever since. Whats crazy is that I AM A FILM JUNKIE. been one since I was a kid, Now God shown me that Filmmaking is my calling as well. Im Very happy and currently at FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY GETTING MY BACHELORS AND GRAD IN NOVEMBER>now I have the feeling that I will be moving to California Soon! HOPE TO WORK WITH YOU

3:27 - Hey we have similar stories! I also took Computer Science and worked at a tech store (Canada's version of Best Buy at the time) which played a role in creating interest in cameras. I was in the Home Theatre Department (so not cameras) and then one day a customer who bought a whole home theatre package asked me to sell him a camera too as part of the package. We normally don't do cross department sales, but I obliged since this was a loyal customer. So I went home and did some research before recommending a camera and this got the ball rolling.
Similar story for me. I love tech I went to college for the same thing, graduated and worked as a data analyst for 3 years. Moved to the US couldnt find a job since the whole tech layoff took a videography job left after 6 months. Now I’m a freelancer. Each day I think about going back in tech for a steady income it’s so hard. And my husband is active military
Computer Networking Operations Degree, took interest in Visual Communications while in school, got a camera (Canon Powershot G6 or similar) and received positive feedback from my community. Further explored shooting and ways to make $$, God graced me with awesome mentors and experience along the way. Started a successful Photoj business now video Sony Fx3 (2024) excited about my new journey (still have a 🦶🏾 in IT). Came across your channel today, needed help with filming interview, proper setup and the why behind it. Liked and subscribe now a fan. Thank you for sharing!

The line about having people that can help pull your dreams out of you is so true…sometimes my wife believes in me more than I believe in myself…find people that help you keep pushing when things are tough.

Thanks for sharing your story and congrats on your success. Change is the only thing constant and support is so critical in the journey of a filmmaker. It's interesting to see the diverse backgrounds that filmmakers come from. I think that's what makes every filmmaker unique is their own personal stories transmuted into their work.

It's so dope hearing your background and story. Especially the part where you talk about how growing up you didn't even know these career paths were an option, because you didn't see it. This is why representation is so important. I almost went down the same route, but ended up doing the opposite! I had a few friends that decided to major in Computer Science and it sounded like the curriculum was pretty dated compared to the stuff I was already informally teaching myself through books + the internet, so I pursued my creative interests in college and my tech interests in my free time. Fast forward and I ended up writing code full time and doing photo/video as a hobby. In the end it all worked out because my day job affords me the financial stability to pursue my creative endeavors. Looking forward to the next story time!
