Uprighting The Fallen Truck Camper

  • Chris and I worked for about two hours and got the fallen truck camper back on its floor. It was quite a job but in the end we got it done. We had a friend who was supposed to help as well but he never showed up.
    I had spent quite a bit of time analyzing the truck camper and thinking about how to get it back on its floor again without damaging anything inside.
    Melanie had just put all our wedding gifts and kitchen ware out there due to a water leak under the kitchen sink. We blew out a water drain pipe and Melanie emptied the area under the counter.
    All our glass ware, bakeware, canning jars, dishes and more were out in the truck camper.
    I wanted to settle it over on its floor without jarring anything inside any more than they already had been.
    I used a come along attached to a tree and the camper jack to put pressure on the one side to prevent the camper from tipping over on its side. It was badly leaning on its side and wanted to tip that way.
    We used the engine hoist to put pressure on the lower corner of the truck camper so that I could remove a bolt from the jack that was jammed under the camper and pull the jack out using a rope.
    Then I secured the jack out of the way and we let the camper down on some tires to keep it from tipping over.
    After releasing the engine hoist and putting pressure on the come along, we were able to move the engine hoist to the other side.
    This time we fully extended the engine hoist and used a chain connected to the jack to keep the camper from falling down fast and hard on its floor.
    Cranking the come along a few cranks at a time and then releasing the engine hoist slightly, brought the camper down bit by bit.
    This took us some time but eventually we got it. I recorded the whole thing just in case so that you can watch it all unfold.
    We had to readjust the engine hoist at one time and the tires came in handy again. But we got the camper down on the ground.
    The amount of stuff in the cab over bed area causes the camper to still want to tip over on its front end. We have to move everything down to the floor area and into the storage cabinets to stabilize the truck camper.
    You should never store gear up in the cab over bed area. It was designed to have all its weight in the bottom and center to prevent tipping over. I am saying this for anyone else out there in order to maybe help out and prevent an accident.
    I do not blame Melanie for this and I am not angry contrary to what so many people are saying in the comments. I am very sad and blame myself for not paying attention to what she was doing. She had no idea. I know better.

      Thank you. Just for all to learn from. NEVER put all your gear in the cab over bed area. Load the bottom and center of the camper to keep the weight and center of gravity low.

    I would simply build a saw horse underneath the Cab Over so the camper can rest on it. There are plenty of pallets to build this saw horse I see on the property. I would double up on building it to make it all the more strong. Doesnt cost anything since you have the pallets and screws and a saw. Just my simple thought. Thanks for sharing this video Troy, Melanie, and Chris. :) :) :)

    My Dad had this problem with his camper like this. He used a regular car jack ( with wood planks under the normal jack stands to jack it up with ) each time he raised it up - he propped and secured it with cinder blocks at each corner it gave it a better stable standing along with it regular jacks.... he also placed saw* horses under neath it too...

      All our wedding stuff, kitchen stuff, glassware, bakeware and other glass things were in there due to emptying the kitchen cabinets due to a water blow out in the house. Nope, not excessive at all. Did not break a thing bringing it back down. And dont tell me we should have emptied it first. All that stuff is what kept it sitting still where it was.

    • @fixed-by-dork1315

      What caused the water blowout in the house?

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld

      Something, either alive or not, pushed down on the drain pipes, putting pressure on the gaskets under the sink until they failed. I dont know the situation because Melanie found the mess and cleaned out under the sink before I got there. I have no idea what was the exact cause of the downward pressure, either animal, person or object.

    My big Lance slide in camper went right over on it's side as one of the front jacks gave out. We removed all the jacks, and other heavy items and my hoist on our small farm tractor pulled the camper back on to it's bottom. I had jacked it up so we could move it to a more permanent place on two big saw horses using my F250 Super Duty pickup.

  • @lynnelewis2538
    @lynnelewis2538 8 лет назад +1

    I don't know much about DIY, but couldn't you use a couple of those small tree trunks you've recently cut as upright 'props' under the front edge of the camper? It would in effect put the front edge on 'stilts'. Not so you could put more stuff up in there, but to support that unstable top heavy piece against further mishap?

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  8 лет назад +1

      We plan to put the camper on a trailer and then I will use tie down straps to secure it to the trailer and put props permanently under the front of the camper

  • @selador11
    @selador11 8 лет назад

    Good job! Now level it up, then start raising it a bit at a time, until you get it far enough off the ground to put some pallets under the floor. Put enough pallets under there to support the entire floor area. Then set it back down until it is completely set on the pallets. Now, make 'stemwalls' along both sides. And a storage shed under the front. You have plenty of cedar wood in the back of that truck to do that with. Build the frames of the walls, and leave them bare for a month, to dry out, before you close it in. When done, you'll have a very sturdy camper, and a bunch of extra storage.
    To put a cheap cover over it that will last for at least 7 years, and be completely waterproof... Make a basic frame that covers the top, and hangs over about 6 inches on every side. You can do this with 2x4. It doesn't have to be a beefy thing. Cover that, first with 6 mil plastic. Cheap at lowes or home depot... Then cover that with a good tarp. If you fasten the tarp down securely all around the edges, using something like plaster lath, then secure the frame really well, this will protect the camper, and keep everything dry for at least 7 years.

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  8 лет назад

      Actually I plan to put it on a trailer now and mount it permanently to that. I am considering the storage though

    Could you build a storage area under the front part of camper so it can rest on top? Extra storage too.

  • @buddylight2191
    @buddylight2191 8 лет назад

    I would have used pallets under the rear of the camper at around 18:01 instead of the tires then you could have left the pallets there supporting the camper. Place 2X6's under the front of the camper to spread out the force and use small bottle jacks to lift the front a little at a time.

    Glad everything turned out okay, especially that Melanie was not injured! I'm not sure how that engine lift thingy works, but when I saw Chris holding the chain I kept thinking, is that camper going to shift, pull severely on the chain and take his fingers off? I'm glad he came away with all his digits and wasn't caterpaulted anywhere. He was probably perfectly safe, but that is what I was fearing, anyway. Good use of the equipment you had on hand to help counterbalance the thing as you tried to get it upright.

      @prepper4170 8 лет назад

      Russell Albrecht It doesn't matter all truck bed campers are in a similar setup til this day just more modernized and made of stronger materials.
      If you don't distribute the load correctly it will tip over on modern ones as well, one of the many things listen in the owners manuals that come with them.
      On top of that they are not designed to be used outside of truck beds or as offices or whatever it was being used for in this video. The truck bed itself adds support and stability the legs built on truck bed campers are only designed to be used for storing it or leaving it at a camp while you go to a grocery store or something.
      In order to make that safe for use outside of a truck bed it would need to be lowered on to cinder blocks or some form of base that mocks a truck bed.

    My dad had an old camper once on top of the hill of his property. Then one night while I was sleeping in it the hydraulic cylinders on the right side gave out and falling off the cliff down the Rocky steap hill she went when me inside in the bed. I was being tossed around the camper. Smashed right in to the barbwire fence. Then crashing right threw the side house pulling down the electrical lines connected between house on the roof and the power pole on he side of the highway. Then plowing right through the fuse box, washer, and hot water tank coming to dead stop right next to the kitchen. Next thing I remember is slightly waking up in the Emergency Room being rushd into surgery with bags and needless stuck in me. I couldn't move my hands or feet at that point. It was months before that body cast came off me.

      I would never leave the camper just on the hydraulics. This one failed due to being over loaded in the front bed area, making it top heavy. It flipped right over off the jacks and supports I had under it.

      I dont think so because the jacks were damaged. One was totally destroyed in the fall. It could never stand again on its own like that. I had to right it and get something under it.

      Well this was no interview for a job anyway. I show my daily life and this is what I did this day. It was a success and none of the glassware in the camper got broken. Success in my book
