I'm a UK peasant with my own house and married. I'm 37. I've watched my income slowly deteriorate despite working very hard. Swallowed up in debt interest and fuel costs. Combined with increasing food prices. The older generation my parents and grandparents have money due to massive shifts in house values which have been paid for by other people's debt.
Children today unless they have a massive deposit they won't own a home and will be stuck in perpetual rent. The Empire enriched the Upper Class, a coal miner never benefited.

The UK is a rentier economy, run by and for landlords and bankers. It had its chance to become a modern diversified knowledge economy in the 1990s and 2000s, and it blew it. Fiscal policy and monetary policy was set up for the benefit of rentiers rather than producers of actual goods and services. Half the population of the country thought the nation was actually getting richer as a result of buy-to-let and bankers' bonuses. Instead, it strangled the real economy. There was a second chance for a major course correction in 2009, after the financial crisis. This went to waste as well, as everybody scrambled to restore the status quo ante. Couple this with a lack of infrastructure investment and a mismatch of immigration levels with new housing stock, and you had a recipe for disaster. The tinderbox was there, Brexit lit the fuse, and here we are.
The current market/economy is unnecessarily tougher for boomers/senior citizens, I’m used to just buying and holding assets which doesn’t seem applicable to the current rollercoaster market plus inflation is catching up with my portfolio. I’m really worried about survival after retirement.

England and the UK is dominated by financial services and is run by bankers that hedge all their bets on an inflationary economy and property bubble. It outsourced most of its industrial heart to China and now has a very fragile economy based on services and retail, the latter simply selling the stuff that was made in China back to the public. I'm generalising a bit (100% of goods not made in China, maybe 80-90%) but overall, this is what has happened.
I'd consider that as a win considering how China destroyed their own land and people for a temporary comparative advantage in manufacturing. The UK needs to grow their service economy and specialized manufacturing if they wish to remain a major world power.
I'm a 'brain drainee', working online and happily living with my wife and son in Java, Indonesia, a country I think will provide my children and grandchildren with great opportunities!! I have no intention of returning to the UK in the future other than to visit family who I hope will move here in due course.

The US taxes its citizens on their worldwide income no matter where they move to and It's only a matter of time before UK does the same to many well educated people and rich people are moving abroad to avoid paying UK tax, making them pay full taxes on their world wide earning will stop the brain drain as no one wants to pay full tax to UK and which ever country they moved to as well.
I'm 28, I was studying at a University in Glasgow, Scotland, worked in london for 2 years. Soon realised UK isn't worth it anymore. I Left in January. Reasons as follows: Terrible Healthcare, high taxes, expensive housing, Unnecessary paperwork even for skilled expats. I have 3 jobs offers now, 1 from AUZ, 1 from Germany and 1 from Dubai. Mind you I am a pretty good AI engineer. The govt's agenda to penalize legal immigrants and give free food/ housing to illegal immigrants is so unfair. I have seen it in London which is full of illegal migrants, while I was paying all the taxes, visa fee, immigration fee and still had to wait for weeks to get a doctor's appointment. The economic collapse doesn't happen all of a sudden (like falling from a ceiling), it happens in a gradual sense, slowly and steadily. British economy is on the same trajectory. British are one of sweetest people, I can't say the same thing about their govt though.

I'm from Scotland and so many people I know have ditched living here and now live abroad. I haven't and at 40 am lucky to have a good life that enables me to live here. Nonetheless many of my contemporaries emigrated overseas and I know many others planning to do the same - scarily large numbers of people who see no future for themselves in Scotland, or the UK for that matter. The UK's future indeed looks very bleak and there's no-one with the capacity to turn it around. But I'm increasingly reading about similar problems in countries like Canada, New Zealand, Australia or the US where a lot of the problems we face here, such as living costs and housing, are problems in these places. Perhaps emigration is not the panacea people think it is.
This is what I wonder…where are all these people fleeing to. The entire Anglosphere and much of the developed West are plagued by the same problems eg housing, privatisation, employment, rising inequality etc. Some places may be marginally better than others but I can think of none that would justify the investment of time, energy and money required to move countries.

I live in Oman It is safe, friendly and à highest qualité lifestyle. My energy bill is £10 a month, I fill up my car for £25 and crime is non existent. I live at the beach with a marina, golf course, pools etc. The sun shines every day- and I pay zero tax on any money I earn. Nice to visit the UK from time to time but a lot of it horrifies me!

Fr, I'm someone who has spent most of my life in nigeria (born in india) and people need to understand just how lucky they are to be born in the UK. Sure, if you have money, then you can live like a king in some third world country, but no country will give you the same opportunities even the lower class get in the UK. (except for the rest of the developed world of course and some parts of china/India/Brazil)

Simplistic and niave overview especially with regauard to Thatcher, the Current UK Government and the imbalance of UK Tax burden, which falls on the lower classes. Thatcher stole all the Public Utilities including: The Post Office, Water, Rail, Telecomm, Gas and Electricity, she also sold BP oil, National Steel, The power gird, British Leyland, [Cars and Buses] and some smaller British owned banks, to foreign companies. The costs of this is hitting the UK 30 years later, when these companies are taking staggering amounts of money out of the UK, whilst paying no tax on that money, thus further inflating the UK tax burden on the lower classes. The Current Tory government have introduced the most corrupt, cronism based systems for public supply contracts, whilst continuing the privatisation of the NHS and Health services. Brexit is a complete and utter failure. One that was instgated at the behest of the mega-rich ,as the EU introduced the new law that made it illegal to avoid tax by moving money offshore to Tax Havens. The collapse of the UK is closer than people realise. Whole generations of UK voters are completely alienated from the Two party, Fist past the post electorial system. And the Tory Party face complete anyilation at the next election. Urgent change is needed.

Lets get this straight , public debt isnt a problem if you issue your debt in your own currency, i.e. the Uk issues the £, no other country can issue the £, same for the US, NZ etc. So public debt isnt a problem, what is a problem is private debt , which means that more people are leveraged and at risk of default or losing their home because of interest rate hikes, if they lose their home they could lose their job and leave the economy and become dependent on the state, also their assets can be hoovered up by the wealthy. We also have a lot of precarity in the UK, with people living pay slip to pay slip. The UK economy shifted from a manufacturing economy to a services based one which isnt really productive or less productive in my humble opinion, i.e. banking , insurance etc, doesnt fill pot holes or build hospitals , improve infrastructure etc. it just moves peoples and firms money around and speculates (this adds to the UK GDP, but adds no real value to the non finance sector). The UK also sold off many assets to private corps/interests, many not even operating within the UK. We are one of the only countries with fully privatised water and shit in our rivers. We have sold off all our gas storage, we import most of our food and our energy so we are prone to inflationary pressures. All the while the amount of millionaires and billionaires has increased.
The economy was designed this way by policy and legislation , it could be turned around but there doesnt seem to be the political will to do so. The issues with an aging population isnt in the fact that the tax base collapses so public services will decline, the UK government could print as many £s as it needs to fund the NHS, it doesnt need back its own IOUS to fund anything , the issue is , are there the real reources available to purchase to move from private to public and is there a productive enough economy to absorb any additional demand from a demography shift from workers to pensioners. The UK govt offers very little in terms of child support, so i dont see anything changing in terms of a demography shift away from where we are heading and as we have absolutely toxified the narrative on immigration , then that will be a hurdle that no political party will countenance as well as the tariff barriers and Brexit

Why would you cite 2019-2021 trade figures, which naturally would be hugely affected by COVID, rather than the newest figures: 2019-2023, which shows nearly £160bn growth in exports? UK exports have more or less continued the trend of export growth pre-Brexit. £575.6bn exported in 2016, £864.5bn exported in 2023.

What has happened is we've had 14 years of Tory rule. Austerity from 2010 meant no investment in public services, the effects of which aren't felt for several years (ie, now) where people become less healthy, struggle to get doctor's appointments under our once world-renowned NHS, public transport cuts meaning commuting to work gets harder, dentist's full to the brim with patients resulting in more hospitalization for those who have had to perform 'DIY dentistry' and end up getting infections, rising cost of living, shortening life expectancy, extremely low state housing scheme meaning thousands on housing waiting lists and many more people becoming homeless, a reduced birth rate because of many of these issues playing a factor in people deciding not to have a family because they simply cannot afford it financially or in terms of security as they grow older. There are probably a few dozen if not a 100 or so more things I could list, but these are basically the big take-aways for any foreign viewer outside the UK. What happens when you elect a government that cuts investment in services and raises taxes? Extreme inequality, the poor get poorer the rich get richer as they sit on their capital (property!) while the government gets so corrupt it gives handouts to it's friends and donors behind their backs while claiming that 'times are hard but vote for us next time and I promise it will get better'.
Thank god we have an election on 4th July. It will be an 'Independence Day from the Tories'.

I think it's important to note that for issues such as an ageing population, nearly every other western country will face it too. Not just japan and Germany.
I’m naturalised British and spent the majority of my life and my formative years here and I agree- Britain’s best days are behind it. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get by here and it just isn’t worth it anymore. Inflation is high, cost of living is high, rents and housing affordability are gone, the NHS is crumbling, job opportunities and investments are dwindling and on top of that we’re in a period of the highest tax burden we’ve had in decades. The U.K. is a high tax country and doesn’t provide its citizens the opportunity to thrive. I don’t want to leave, but you’re not getting your value for money when you have to spend nearly half your income on taxes whilst the cost of everything’s keeping on going up. Just isn’t worth it to stay here anymore.

This was a very informative and well-made video. Speaking as a Brit, I'm always hesitant to hear what foreigners think about our political situation, but your analysis seems to be very much on the ball.
In honesty though, a lot of the problems you are describing that await the UK can easily be replicated elsewhere in many other European countries (and perhaps America too)-since globally around the world fertility rates are collapsing.
Our government and civil service are lazy, and sees immigration as a convenient, effortless method of forestalling the inevitable ageing demographic imbalance and isn't bothering to resort to more common sense alternatives-like automation, mechanisation, or offering to train its own younger people to help sustain its increasingly burdened public services. In addition to that, there is an ideological (bordering on religious) component towards immigration-the idea that we, as a former Empire who colonised the world and washed it pink, have to atone for our sins after centuries of colonialism. That, in addition to factors such as the balance of power in our governance has also changed.
No amount of social reforms we, as a nation, could pass would happen in a vacuum-the United Nations and IMF would all pass comment upon it. If we were to take radical steps to reform our economy, it would severely impact and complicate our relationships with other countries in the world.
IE: We chose to stop importing cheap labour from India or Pakistan and tried to organise our own workforce, or we tried to limit the amount of real estate that foreign residents were able to hold in our housing market. I don't see our government having the cojones to pull this off-particularly when many people in our government are more beholden to special interests than their own constituents.

I live in one of those run down industrial towns in the north of England and life is fine overall, my neighbours are from Portugal and have good jobs and love it here, work with good pay is hard to find in Portugal apparently. I do admittedly live in a good neighbourhood for the area but not particularly wealthy. That said we have lost a lot of engineering/manufacturing firms since the 1980's and you can't escape the feeling of malaise is the best way I can describe it. Retail is hanging on but there is no hustle and bustle anymore (thanks Amazon). I think this guy is right we need to stop all these negative tends while we still have skilled people to do it but the politicians need to start being honest and better quality. Cheap labour won't save us either; we need skilled immigrants in family units from anywhere. We have a lot going for us still but special interests are pulling us and our allies in the "developed" world down. All countries face similar challenges as change speeds up, fighting that change is not the answer and all of Europe in particular not just the EU is at a crossroads as signs of societies strains begin to show.
I live likewise but see a lot of high tech manufacturing in my area. We could help this if we made things easier to set up , gave some cheaper loans , increased tech education and still believed in our originality more.

The dependency problem is the least of the UKs pension worries. The UK abolished pensions in the 1990s and replaced them with Money Purchae Schemes (retirement savings, NOT pensions) which means that it will have fully transitioned from a system where the majority of private pensions were generous and provided a comfortable retirement to one where retirement savings are completely inadequate.
The impact of this on Demand is going to be massive and cement the UK's decline from a wealthy nation to a middle income country.

I am British and moved back to the UK from the USA, in spite of the UK's problems, because I literally could not stand living among Americans any more, with them or in their culture. It was so refreshing to be back home again, with my people. Yes, I am not as wealthy in the UK, but there are some things that you cannot put money on.

And UK culture is very different from American culture. I will try to explain it to you with an analogy, which hopefully will be clear. A tangerine is not the same as a Seville orange, which in turn is not the same as a mandarin. Each is slightly different, but they all fall under the umbrella of the orange family. This is because they have many characteristics in common. In this analogy, regional UK cultures are represented by different members of the orange family. In this analogy, American culture wouldn't be a type of orange, it might be more like an onion. I wanted oranges, not onions.

Weak leadership is the issue. At least Margaret Thatcher had a backbone like Winston Churchill did. All of Boris Johnson's bluster was nonsense and he backed down every step of the way. Sunak has proven to be incredibly weak and I have no faith that Kier Starmer will be any better. I don't know what happened to our backbone, I really don't, we have gotten really weak, pathetic, and servile over the decades and our strong spines and strong stoicism is a thing of the past. We don't get stronger leadership, we will continue our decline indefinitely.

The numbers you were giving must be 2020/21 numbers. The UK reported a fertility rate of 1.49 in 2022. Which means in 2024, it’s probably dropped to around 1.42.
The original point the video made about the “UK having one of the lowest birth rates in Europe” isn’t factually accurate. But it misses the point that even the healthiest European countries are still doing very poorly.

I would like to point out that Scotland is not the only British country showing signs of independence. People often don't realise the UK is made up of four countries; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The whole Island of Ireland used to be apart of the UK, but after fighting for their independence in the 1920s, Britain granted independence to the country. However, the North of Ireland was to remain part of the UK, as in it lived many descendants of English and Scottish colonialists (known collectively as Unionists) who still wished to remain part of Britian. 26 of the 32 Counties of Ireland would form the "Free State" (Later declared the Repbulic of Ireland in 1949), whilst the remaining 6 counties became known as the country of Northern Ireland.
However, in recent years there have been increasing signs that Northern Ireland is on path to reunite with the rest of Ireland. In 2022, Sinn Fein, a nationalist party (nationalists being people who wish for Irish reunification) became the largest political party in the Northern Irish Parliament of Stormont for the first time. Additionally, in the 2021 census, it was recorded that there were now more Nationalists than Unionists in Northern Ireland, and there has been a decrease in the amount of people identifying as British and an increase in the amount of people identifying as Irish.
Now, all in all, Northern Ireland is not that significant to the UK. With a population of 1.8 million, we make up about 2% of the overall UK population, don't really contribute much to the economy and the loss of landmass will not be a huge blow to the UK. The only real advantage Northern Ireland provides are ports that are slightly closer to the US. Infact, we actually cause the Britian a good bit of trouble, from the violent 30 years conflicts of "The Troubles" from the 1960s-90s, along with the bother we caused in thr aftermath of Brexit, as the UK technically shares a land border with the EU due to the Repbulic of Ireland being an EU member state. However, whether it be Irish Reunification or Scottish independence, whichever one happens first will certainly have a knock on effect to the other. Plus, after the loss of the Empire in the 20th century, the breakup of the UK will truely signal how it is not the once great international power it was. And of course, most important of all, the leaving of Northern Ireland from the Union many lead to the changing of the iconic Union Jack. The Irish government has projected reunification in the next ten years, but whenever it happens, it will probably be felt more than Northern Ireland ever was apart of the Union.

What they are doing right now is expanding the supply chain into countries like Vietnam and other part of South East Asia. We can actually see the result of that Vietnam actually increased its export by at least 10% over the last two years. Much of Vietnamese products were rebrand, or reassembled part from mainland China. In fact 80% of Vietnamese products were either come as fully assembled goods, or in parts from two countries South Korea and China. China has moved into offshoring some of its less profitable industries into Asia and Africa. Why is China viewed as a threat in the west, it is not just because it is a communist country but more importantly its tech sector is picking up the pace and will challenge the US in not just manufacturing but also tech sector. In contrast India which many in the west viewed as a possible manufacturing hub replacing China is at least 40 years behind.

Every empire falls, including the UK. However, this doesn't mean that life in the UK has to be bad.
Currently, things are challenging, but there's potential for stability, and the UK has many strengths. The stability of its institutions, for instance, is a significant advantage. Over hundreds of years, the UK has developed and maintained robust institutions. Admittedly, in recent years, the UK has faced stagnation and a lack of development and modernization. This stagnation is surprising, given that the UK was a pioneer of modernity with the industrial revolution.
But is the UK over? I don't think so. What's needed is a cultural shift. British people need to recognize that letting go of the past and embracing the future is essential for success. Only by adapting and evolving can the UK provide its citizens with a sustainable and prosperous future.

I would argue that the stability of institutions is the problem. The infected blood scandal, the post office scandal, Jimmy Saville, the corruption and lack of accountability at the Met police, the shenanigans of the royal family, the routine slapp lawsuits institutionalized, the various covid contracting scandals, the public procurement scandal of the week, the scuppering of the 2nd Levison Inquiry by the Tories: every day a headline pointing to institutions that are expert in avoiding accountability. This totally has to change. That is the cultural shift that is needed.

The problem with the Thatcherite solution to Britain’s issues, is you can only privatise once. There’s not much of a public realm to roll back. The NHS is a red herring, because in the next 20 years, the Boomers will give way to Gen Xers, who are not as numerous. There’s already significant private involvement in education at all levels. The railways, and various public utilities are already in private hands. When Thatcher put through her reforms, it helped that Britain was in relative terms, an equal country. Those are the only favourable poltical circumstances, you can successfully sell such an agenda to the public. But you can’t repeat this, in what is now one of the most unequal nations in the Global North.
We have two parties, that see themselves as traumatised victims of the power of organised labour. The Tories blame powerful organised labour for the economic woes of the 70s. Labour blame powerful organised labour for the electoral losses in the 80s. Both parties have a trauma led vested interest, in making sure organised labour, never has that power again. It will restructure the economy and society, to ensure this is the case. Allowing managed decline of UK manufacturing, even to the detriment of national energy security and defence? So be it. Use migrant labour in the short term, to avoid investing in domestic labour long term? So be it. Not replace sold off social housing stock, and as a result, push down housing availability, and therefore increase rents. Whilst making ownership unrealistic, and have levels of homelessness, unseen in western societies? So be it.
Britain is locked on for a massive revolution. But the problem with revolutions, is they usually in the complete opposite direction, those wishing for it, hoped for.
The railways and "various utilises" are not in private hands, their in the hands of government established and controlled monopolises and in directly in state hands via nationalised rails(Network Rail, rather important to maybe you know RUNNING A RAILWAY) or the National Grid which fits the description of the former. Same with water companies.
State backed monopolies that are as massivly regulated as these are are pretty much in all but name just highly corrupt nationalised sectors. If they were actual private companies like Tesco or Morrisions etc. they'd be able to fail, they'd have competitors and they wouldn't be so fundamentally micro-managed by x new declaration made by the government.

Some of those problems are unique but (declining fertility + mass immigration ) are not unique to the UK. Much of Europe and the USA (slightly different as a settler country) are doing the same. It's incorrect when some people prematurely think mass immigration is the answer to low fertility rates because either way it's simply not proven yet. Nobody knows yet if the positives will outweigh the negatives in the long run.
The reality is that only some countries in Europe suffer from a migrant problem. Mainly because the migrants themselves only want to live in a few European countries and skip the rest.

Stop stupid policies like Rwanda which will have no real impact on illegal immigration and predatory traffickers. Build lower and mid rent housing. Audit the education system to help stem the bleeding of teachers from the profession.
A wealth tax doesn't make everything possible, but it would be a massive step in the right direction. It is almost universally supported, even amongst the wealthy. Income tax fairly taxes the working, a wealth tax will tax the incomes generated by the assets of the uber wealthy.

Many people in the UK still live in the facade that we remain an extremely dominant hard power on the global stage. We're not. We are in a significant decline and chronically lacking in access to public services compared to the "poorer" and the "least economically productive" countries within the EU and Europe as a whole.

Our universities are some of the best in the world. Britain isn't broken, but its engine needs a refit. The worst bit is the amateurish quality of politicians and political decison-making. But no-one is pushing for political reform, with the English working class having voted like lemmings for Brexit, and against a PR voting system, revealing a worrying level of political manipulability. Relative decline is inevitable, but this is due to the out-performace of Britain since 1700. The UK's relative decline in the 20th century saw it hit standards of living unimaginable in 1870, showing the reality of relative decline to be meaningless. Nobody in the UK cares for outdated concepts like the Empire or the stiff upper lip, as they represent either brutality, or the kind of stoicism which saw Britons march like sheep towards the trenches of WW1 just because they were told to. The UK needs to be worried about its politics more than its economy.
As of 2:30 I've been aware of those historical fundamentals for some time, but when you stop, and think about it, it really is the most significant era of all human history in my opinion. According to other videos, it seems like the Roman Empire could have hypothetically had a steam driven industrial revolution, but did not. Here's an interesting idea. I once saw a documentary about the Bubonic Plague history of Europe, and one of the conclusions was that drastic population losses inspired a need for automation. I remembered that because I was struck by that concept, and the idea that maybe that was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
The Roman Empire was a slave based economy. They had no need to innovate. They could just throw thousands of slaves at the problem.

An Englishman here! Very well done, well researched video. Bravo! You are right about 95% of everything discussed but it all proves the point that so called "democracy" simply doesn't work. Free market capitalism, yes, but democracy no. The country is too fractured and divided on so many issues that there is no way forward and although there have been some upbeat moments in recent years (like the 80's and 90's) the reality is an overall decline since the second world war. You will see over the next few years, Politian's continue to fumble and delay, pulling and pushing in different directions, solving absolutely nothing until the inevitable happens. Only benevolent dictatorships work to build strong countries (and empires) who put the interests of their own people first and foremost. This will be proven over the next 20 years. Watch this space!
