I would like to have heard much more from Hanif Kureishi. I think a third person at the table might have been able to even out the load taken on by Will Self. Time to share, boys.

London is much more interesting if you see it vertically & deconstruct the layers of history, rather than focus on the commercialisation & gentrification of yee olde London town.

Bromley was part of Kent when Kureishi was growing up, not part of London.

It became part of Greater London in 1965, when Kureishi was 10

I feel sorry for the bloke I live in Bromley now near where he grew up and it still is pretty white but obviously not as much as it was then

Just watching the intro and it's fascinating to see Self talking Mockney to establish is Mockney bona fides - he sounds a lot more Oxbridge on the LRB piece I just saw - funny that

+Misery Cottage Nah man, Self spent like 20 years sitting around various manky flats talking shite with London Junkies of all stripes (they are, after all, incredible gossips) - that attitude (while no doubt in some sense an artifice - what isn't?) will have been *long* honed...I think he probably got all his _Bona fides_ in order. (and steeply paid for.)
