I bought the Deepmind 12 in 2019 after watching Jorb and will have the Deepmind 6 delivered in a few days. 21 Behringer synths are a quarter of my collection of desktop, rack and Eurorack modules.
Great video thanks, very helpful and easy to watch (not sure why you only have 210 subs [plus one]....mind boggling considering some of the other videos i've watched on the same instrument), thinking about getting one of these, youre convincing me further.
Hey man. Great presentation and channel :) I own a DeepMind 12 also and I absolutely love it. I own quite a few other keyboards and modules as well. I will start with the modules. I have a Behringer Model D and a K2. As far as my keyboards are concerned, I have, of course the DeepMind 12, A Novation MiniNova, An Ensoniq SQ1+, A Yamaha DX7 Mk1, A Yamaha DX7s Mk2 and a Yamaha EX5. The DX7s and EX5 have yet to arrive as I ordered them from Japan on Ebay. My master controller keyboard is an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88. Love the keyboard. I also have a huge selection of VSTi instruments using Cubase 11. For my string libraries, I exclusively use 8DIO libraries. I also use their brass, woodwinds, percussion etc. Just great stuff all the way around. I love gear as well and my gear keeps me from going nuts lol. I literally compose for film and TV and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I subbed your channel. Keep up your great work man. Scott
If you get one of these make sure you turn it off every time after use. I tend to leave my synths running for long stretches at a time .. and my DM12’s LCD display dimmed so low after a year it was barely readable. I have a new one now and only turn it on when absolutely for sure I’m going to use it .. same for the rack mount version I also own.
I really do feel like my studio is further ahead of what I’m even able to comprehend when I think about how I have behringers DM12, Model D, 303, all analog processing/amplification, and a guitar rig that’s bigger than the synth rig. I really feel like these instruments are going to get used by me in ways that I’m not even capable of conceptualizing at this point since its all been assembled within a year. Great video man! I love your style, you ought to channel your favorite broadcasters when thinking about your delivery, I thought of dick cavett hearing your voice.
Appreciate the kind words! I've been thinking of the right way to have a long video about guitar pedals + synths, talk about input impedance, managing volume, etc etc. Since I feel like there's tons of people like you and I, with guitar rigs AND synth gear. Why not run a mono synth through the fuzz pedals? 😁
Hehehe, and after a couple years of you explaining how great this synth is, I'm finally buying one. It was the synth that is in the nexus of: almost being as capable as my Matriarch but can save a preset, and also not costing more than the Matriarch. :) Other than using the control sequencer or the sample & hold LFO wave form to control the pitch of one of the oscillators, I think you've covered just about everything I'd want to know about this synth in one of your videos.
@@0AdRiaN0fficial I feel pretty uncomfortable with behringer trying to copyright Tom Oberheim's name, makes me a little weary of the whole project. But the demos are definitely sounding impressive.
@@JorbLovesGear making an affordable replica of a 40years old synth is good idea. After the manner they used seems opened to debate. Up to Oberheim to defend his right if needed.
@@0AdRiaN0fficial I don't have a problem with cloning a long unavailable piece of kit, it's great for consumers. But trying to publicly present that it *is* an oberheim? That's not something I can respect. Regardless, they had that trademark application rejected already (in the states at least) since it implied a nonexistent connection with Oberheim.
I'm trying to land on another good thing to teach / deliver, I think maybe a series of short videos focused on a certain style of patch? 5 minutes of pad tips, bass tips etc. Think that would be a good way to deliver that?
This has been on my list for years I just haven't prioritized it because it seems like they'll always be available for cheap. I have noticed the price has gone up a bit this past year as opposed to what it had been for a while. I think people are realizing how powerful it is.
If I could only pick one synth for my desert island (out of what I own personally) I’d pick the Deepmind 12 - over my Sequential Pro 3 - System 8 - MS20 mini - Roland JD-XA. Even though the oscillators aren’t as “good” as the Pro 3, the DM12 is versatile... I’ve had mine for a little over a year and have created a patch that sounds like an acoustic piano - thanks to the mod matrix and effects. I love mine it’s definitely the best bang for the buck.
I grabbed one of the desktop modules as my first hardware polysynth. I really like it. Fast, intuitive workflow, and the sounds are inspiring. Thanks for the video. Got any more tips and tricks for the Deepmind?
You don't see DM12 everywhere because no one likes Uli, with good reason, but I'm right there with you. I've got some good use from your videos incorporating DM12 as a controller, thanks
Awesome demo man, Nice sounds and patches.I had a DM6 a few years ago, sold it due to the menu diving, though demos/reviews like this make me want to sell my KingKorg and get another Deepmind...one thing though, the camera shaking made it a bit disorientating while watching full screen, other than that very nice work mate!
Cheers I noticed that after I had shot the whole thing, was hitting hit tripod with the synth. Things to improve! I've gotta sit down & get some more out there..
Hi Jorb, I'm new to the world of music synthesis but not to the world of music - I've been a bass and guitar musician for a long time. I'm a subscriber to your channel and I'd like to take you up on your request from the end of the video. I'd like to ask you to re-create the sound of Jack Casady's bass on White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. My understanding is this was done on a Fender Jazz bass - he did not have/use his alembic/Guild Starfire yet. Recorded at RCA studios in LA. Possibly, a lot of the tone is effects, but we'll see. I think I - we - would all learn a lot from seeing how you approach doing something like this. What would you choose? digital, analog, virtual analog? Which unit? How many oscillators and what wave shapes, how many and type of filter, use of mod matrix, effects, etc. I enjoy watching you work and your sharing of your knowledge. I currently have: a Hydrasynth desktop, novation summit, Deepmind 12 D, Behringer Pro 800, and a Microfreak - all purchased used - I like gear too. It would be great if you could use one of those so I could try and recreate your work - but ultimately, it's up to you, of course. If you find this a worthwhile request and challenge, perhaps you could go a little further and try to re-create Jorma's lead guitar sound as well. Thank you so much for your videos. I've learned a lot and I enjoy your spirit, presence, candor, knowledge and willingness to share. If you attempt this, I’d be pleased to leave a donation - your time and attention have value. Even if you don't make a video for this - perhaps you could send me tips for how to do it myself. Thank you, Joe
if this thing had a different brand name on it and was priced 4 times higher, people would totally praise this thing but because its behringer and this thing costs a 4th of a "good synth" people are dismissing it as a cheap product. very sad. This thing will go up in price in the future, that much is for sure. Its just that people cant justify owning their 3 grand synths anymore when a deepmind12 exists.
Fine by me. I have this and a Korg Molologue in my studio. For a casual synth user it is more than enough,. I wish I had more time, as it is indeed deep.
@@FranktheBlindArtistI’m from the Future Future.. Indeed the prices have gone up.. Like Apple, Behringer decided overnight that it was worth an extra €200 new.. Hence anyone that didn’t know the original price are marking up used models and making a few extra bucks over there original purchase price, and still got to enjoy the unit.. As for me, I had a price set in my head, and finally got a 6 month old unit for “€400” Happy days 👍🏼😎 Now I finally have it, I can’t find any reason why I would sell it in the Future Future Future 😂 It’s a friggen unit and a half.. Cheers, thanks. I probably won't toss out it's own video, but just quick tips, the mono unison modes + a bit of detune are your friend, depending on the composition you might want to keep it as a bunch of unison notes instead of the sub osc. Make any filter modulation more subtle than your first thoughts.
Underrated take me with a grain of salt..Its just on the market and plenty of 2nd hand for sale. Its made for a lot of pleasure but can't match the steepness of the filters on my other synths that I use for production. Again, pleasure is a big thing, the reason people also buy Casio etc.
@@JorbLovesGear Got my Deepmind 12 last week. It sounds fantastic. Actually now having explored the Deepmind, it makes me appreciate the Prologue more - they each have strengths and weaknesses.
The bad thing: To get two detuned saws you need dual mode and are down to only 6 voices on the DM12. Almost as strange design choice as the Nord A1 but self explaining if you think that it is based on the old Juno series.
Outstanding informal approach. Kind of like fireside chat. Keep working on the "useable" side on the instrument--not the bleeps, blips, and other-worldly sounds with which many synth videos seem to be saturated. For us working musicians, such are but a waste of time. And your humorous, positive approach is quite refreshing as well.
@@JorbLovesGear Honestly I figured it out quick. The on screen stuff is super well designed and intuitive. First day I wrote like 8 new patches and got it down really quickly.
Thank you! I'm feeling out the right length of content for me, and this video seemed to fit the bill better. I did a *very long* patch creation video, but maybe I'll line up a few more patches to walk through from scratch, try and keep it to a reasonable length.
I get the impression the thing is basically an affordable Juno on steroids. Alas, though, just from a quick perusal of reverb, it looks like it's' getting some notice and traction, and prices of used examples are climbing. Cheapest one I see is $700, with most going for a fair bit more.
Fair description, for sure. Take the core of a juno (minus the chorus) and give it a mod matrix and built in effects. What a wonderful value statement on that alone.
@@JorbLovesGear Someone whose name escapes me posted a vid a bit ago that posited that the Deepmind was the perfect synth for a guitar-MIDI setup. I am tempted to believe him. :D
Hey great video thanks! I have a dm12 on the way and excited to explore. Was curious. You said you would use it for live performance. What is or was your set up? Mainly what did you do if you needed piano parts? Did you bring along a laptop or iPad to link up to and control vsts?
I like to make it work with one keyboard as much as I can, but occasionally used the deepmind to control my reface cp via midi. You can see me do that in a bunch of videos tbh
Did you change mod- and pitch wheels on your unit? Love the video as usual Jorb and cheers from Sweden. I might buy this or the Nymphes, due to wanting a Juno-6...maybe I'll save a little more too lol
Hi! I'm planning to buy a DM12, but I'm also interested in the minilogue XD, I've heard wonderful patches, so I'm open to both options, which one would you recommend as the best option, will be my first synth, and probably the only one for a while, ha! I will appreciate any advise on which one would be a better option for versatility, fun and quality.. Thanks in advance! Awesome video!
If you're comfortable with a few hurdles in regards to the deepmind presets, it has a higher potential ceiling for options overall. And not to be reductive, but 4 voices in the minilogue vs 6 or 12 on the deepmind, you would notice. I still happily recommend the original minilogue as a great first synth, the big difference is no digital osc like the XD, which is pretty fiddly for a new synthesist anyway. Straight forward, compact, very immediate.
Will most of these sounds be the same with the Deepmind 6? I understand that this is double the polyphony, great demo, the DM6 is more favourable to me because of the smaller form factor. Love the rotary organ with leslie sim, didn't expect that out of an analogue synth, hope the Deepmind 6 does that to.
The 6 can produce all of the same sounds, and for most of my playing, won't have any trouble keeping up with available notes. AND the organ is a preset patch! The organ in particular, without any long release it would be hard to run into a problem with note stealing anyways.
I don't have any specific recommendations for midi controllers, but most will have the pitch and mod, and most mid-market and above will have velocity and aftertouch

OK Jorb.. Not because of your vid although it confirm stuff I already hoped. But Im also looking at the BLofeld which is again, another very underrated synth.. thoughts on the 2 ?
Blofeld is a very different beast, the question I'd recommend you answer first is if you're after sounds available with subtractive synthesis, or the flexibility of digital at the cost of some hands-on control and a slightly steeper learning curve. What are you hoping to get out of a keyboard?
@@JorbLovesGear hey Jorb. Thanks for getting back. I honestly played a few PPG's back in the day. I found them harsh and bright compared to my Jupiter 8. Of course thats obvious thing. But I've heard some really amazing pads (almost analogue sounding) from the Blofeld. My heart says Behringer deepmind 12. My head say Blofeld but you hit the nail on the noggin. I know analogue inside out having had so many. The learning curve of the Blofeld with its menus may put me off and make me use the synth as a preset machine.
I've owned one for a year and it never stops to surprise me with all of his potential. I've just lost one slider, do you know where can I find one to replace it?
this is one of the rare synths from Behringer worth picking up, for the price of 500 universal tokens. However, think about a decent multi effect processor - only multi effects unit should cost 500 or something like that - and this is TC Electronics - so, the rest of the synth is for free? :) It is a clumsy copy of Juno series, but it turned into something different. That mod matrix is terrible to dive in though, comparing it to REV2 or Peak, it is crap.

Great video thanks, very helpful and easy to watch (not sure why you only have 210 subs [plus one]....mind boggling considering some of the other videos i've watched on the same instrument), thinking about getting one of these, youre convincing me further.
Really appreciate the kind words!
Always working on more videos, thanks for watching.
Very helpful indeed! I did decide to get one. ❤
thanks, you gave us a very detailed presentation of this synth. and it also contains good tips for sound design.
Thank you! Very nice to hear that so soon.
Just bought one today.
Hope you enjoy it, and hope these clips help you get a bit more out of it
how you enjoying would you recommend it to someone else I already have a minilogue but am looking to widen my sonic palate
Scott
Much appreciated! I've gotten better since this, i promise.
Always working on more, cheers!
Thanks for that bit of advice
How long did you leave it running usually? Kind of disheartening to imagine buying it used and getting one with a burnt out screen...
Nice video and nice gear. It has got me thinking.
Glad to hear it!
Jorb a favorite of mine is the model d through a swollen pickle fuzz!
Nice work Jorb , luv the Dm12, look fwd to more tutorials/demos
Thank you! Schedule should clear up soon.. More to come
Hehehe, and after a couple years of you explaining how great this synth is, I'm finally buying one. It was the synth that is in the nexus of: almost being as capable as my Matriarch but can save a preset, and also not costing more than the Matriarch. :)
Other than using the control sequencer or the sample & hold LFO wave form to control the pitch of one of the oscillators, I think you've covered just about everything I'd want to know about this synth in one of your videos.
Just received it
Amazing synth
Really is tough to find anything close in features for a similar price.
@@JorbLovesGear waiting the replica of ub xa that seems incredible
Can we have more Deepmind 12 videos? We will be very grateful ! I’m subscribing this channel !
Well said, my feelings almost exactly. It's too versatile to ignore, especially at the price point.
Cheers!
I grabbed one of the desktop modules as my first hardware polysynth. I really like it. Fast, intuitive workflow, and the sounds are inspiring. Thanks for the video. Got any more tips and tricks for the Deepmind?
Thanks for the vid! I love this synth!
Thank you! I've gotten better since this, I promise. Lol
@@JorbLovesGear Hell yeah man keep it up! Your patches and playing are pretty bloody legit.
User Interface is everything. If the KingKorg lets you create the things you want fast & sounds good then you made the right choice.
Thank you!
I just purchased the DM 12 new from Zzounds. I'm constantly searching for ideas/patches from youtube. TY for your insight!
Happy to share! You're positioned well to get a knowledge boost from clips like this, the little details that don't jump right out.
Cheers!
Hi Jorb,
I'm new to the world of music synthesis but not to the world of music - I've been a bass and guitar musician for a long time.
Thank you,
Joe
Picked up a demo model with a full warranty for $629 yesterday... No way I could get more synth for my money... No Polly under $2k can really compare
Nice introduction to the DeepMind, thank you. Next videos patches tutorial ? 😁
Thank you! Patch tutorials has been the next idea! Just need to settle on a format.
Soon!
loved the vid, very helpful. keep them coming (DM12)
Cheers, I certainly will
Nice video!
Thanks so much! I'm proud of the information I shared in this one, I hope to talk through other pieces of gear in the same way.
Enjoyed it. Keep it up man
Cheers, I truly appreciate it
I have the Deepmind 12 D. Good information. Can you edit more old school synth bass patches? Like the Moog Model D, or Oberhiem OB XA??
if this thing had a different brand name on it and was priced 4 times higher, people would totally praise this thing but because its behringer and this thing costs a 4th of a "good synth" people are dismissing it as a cheap product.
Fact!
I’m from the future. It’s still great but unfortunately they till sell for about the same so I’m not rich yet 😂
A must buy for beginners to Analoge junkies.. Not just beautiful looking, but a beast in every sense of the word. Running MIDI from my Korg Wavestate to the Deepmind 12 and on to my baby Nord Lead 2X “Analog, Digital, and Digital Analog” What more could a Piano/ Keyboardist want.. Well, I’m still waiting on my fixed price Moog to enter the equation ☕️🎹🔉🎶🎵➰ Cheers 🇮🇪
@@music-maker2505 from the future future future here. It’s awesome but I may have to sell. Spent a week in the icu last year and now I have to have iron every 7 weeks. 11 infusions in the past year. At the moment I’ve sold my controller but are holding off selling my module it’s too good1
Great intro! Almost too perfect,ahaha!!
hi jorb! i was wondering if you could show us how to create a deep bass on the deep mind! love ur content & thanks so much!
@@JorbLovesGear thanks so much jorb! appreciate it
Underrated take me with a grain of salt..Its just on the market and plenty of 2nd hand for sale. Its made for a lot of pleasure but can't match the steepness of the filters on my other synths that I use for production. Again, pleasure is a big thing, the reason people also buy Casio etc.
crazy that these are now $900 new only three years later
Amazing synth and so much amazing factory patches!!!!!
Thank you! Glad this video is still reaching people, as well.
Nice video!
I have a Prologue and getting tired of the cold, aggressive sound of it. Prologue doesn't do warmth well at all
I've been meaning to get another prologue, I think I would appreciate it more knowing what I do now..
They show up for pretty good deals these days!
Cheers! Great feedback, truly.
Deciding what to do next, but there's definitely more to come!
I got one for $580 that's coming tomorrow. So stoked.
A great time up sit and learn it, enjoy!
@@JorbLovesGear Honestly I figured it out quick. The on screen stuff is super well designed and intuitive. First day I wrote like 8 new patches and got it down really quickly.
Aw dude, love this video. I'd love to know how you'd create patches such as the simple patch at the end of the video.
Thank you!
I'm feeling out the right length of content for me, and this video seemed to fit the bill better.
I did a *very long* patch creation video, but maybe I'll line up a few more patches to walk through from scratch, try and keep it to a reasonable length.
it was helpful
It recently got a very random price bump across all retailers . Strange
Must be my incredible influence 🤣🤣🤣jk
Hey great video thanks! I have a dm12 on the way and excited to explore. Was curious. You said you would use it for live performance. What is or was your set up? Mainly what did you do if you needed piano parts? Did you bring along a laptop or iPad to link up to and control vsts?
I like to make it work with one keyboard as much as I can, but occasionally used the deepmind to control my reface cp via midi.
You can see me do that in a bunch of videos tbh
God I love this synth
Honestly same
too bad you recorded it in mono. this is the best synth to come out in the past 5 years.
@@JorbLovesGear thanks brother, I appreciate your advise
@@salvadoravila7145 any time!
Cool do patches
Okay whats the difference between the black mod wheels and clear mod wheels though LOL! cause ive seen some 12's with it, and some without it.
I heard it as earlier ones had the black paint, people complained about it peeling bad and they left it off on later production runs.
Great Video. Since the price of a used DM is that low, what about getting a dm 12D and poly chain them?!
Theres a cheap DM6 by me im REALLY thinking about
You are one cool dude
The kind ones keep me rolling 🙏🙏
yo I liked where things were going @7:48
😂🤣 Tom this video is a year old I've gotten way better
@@JorbLovesGear well I am waiting for the full drop of this angry sketch
Will most of these sounds be the same with the Deepmind 6? I understand that this is double the polyphony, great demo, the DM6 is more favourable to me because of the smaller form factor. Love the rotary organ with leslie sim, didn't expect that out of an analogue synth, hope the Deepmind 6 does that to.
The 6 can produce all of the same sounds, and for most of my playing, won't have any trouble keeping up with available notes. AND the organ is a preset patch!
The organ in particular, without any long release it would be hard to run into a problem with note stealing anyways.
Decent keyboard to control the desktop version and retain DMs aftertouch and velocity sensitivity and wheels?
I don't have any specific recommendations for midi controllers, but most will have the pitch and mod, and most mid-market and above will have velocity and aftertouch
Killer vid
🙏🙏Glad it's still bringing people value

@@JorbLovesGear I discovered thomanns in Germany had new 12D’s at an amazingly low price. Arrived in SLC in just 5 days. This is an amazing synth. Thanks for the reply.
No leads on a slider cap! Although, I have seem some people replace every cap with Arp style colored tips.
What are your thoughts on the fact that there is loud noise when the effects are used?
this is one of the rare synths from Behringer worth picking up, for the price of 500 universal tokens.
I find the mod matrix pretty good to be honest, but havent spent much time with the peak or rev 2
So since you cant use the mac app anymore, how do you connect to a computer and upload patches?
Sysex dumps over midi with any midi librarian
