  • After the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine on Tuesday, Kyiv and Moscow have blamed each other during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Ukraine's UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya accused Moscow of detonating "a bomb of mass environmental destruction" leading to major and avoidable flooding.
Kyslytsya spoke of an "act of ecological and technological terrorism" at the meeting in New York. The blast was "yet another example of Russia's genocide against Ukrainians," he said. Russia's UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, on the other hand, said the incident was a "deliberate sabotage undertaken by Kyiv" and should be "classified as a war crime or an act of terrorism." The dam had been used for an "unthinkable crime," he said.
Kyslytsya in response argued that the dam was in Russian control and out of Ukrainian reach, saying it was "physically impossible" to have caused the damage with shelling and that Russia had mined it. Meanwhile, UN aid chief Martin Griffiths told the Security Council that the dam breach "will have grave and far-reaching consequences for thousands of people in southern Ukraine on both sides of the front line through the loss of homes, food, safe water and livelihoods."
"The sheer magnitude of the catastrophe will only become fully realized in the coming days," he said. Moscow-installed authorities have imposed a state of emergency in the Russian-annexed part of the region. Ukrainian officials estimated about 42,000 people were at risk from the flooding, which is expected to peak on Wednesday.

I'm for Ukraine, I think Russia intended to blow the dam, but not now, or not on this scale, They increased the water level so much that it just blew through the top of the dam, people who were local didn't recall explosions, it's strange for the hydroplant to have been flooded from the top. I'll be clear. It's Russia's fault that it happened, I just think they didn't intended for it to happen now, or on this scale. It's too soon, it doesn't seem like they made contingencies for Crimea.

valuable lessons that would later be applied to riverine operations. Lesson one was that to survive in a firefight with dug-in ground forces, small boats either had to be very fast or heavily armored. Both approaches would be tried with varying degrees of success later in the war. Another lesson was that every brown-water sailor had to possess a set of unique warfighting skills not generally found in the fleet. These included competencies with light weapons, advanced first aid, and small boat handling. In 1967, the Navy established the Navy Inshore Operations Training Center (NIOTC) at Mare Island, California, to teach these skills to sailors assigned to coastal and riverine units in Vietnam.

Ukrainian side of the road leading to the dam was destroyed by Russia when Russia took possession of the dam and as it retreated from Kherson.
How'd they plant the massive number of explosive charges that would be needed to destroy a dam Russia controlled if the road was blown out?
The Russian side blew up first, you can still see the bit of dam left next to the blown out road. beside the missing dam.
No missile can do what was done.
Only hundreds of strategically placed explosives could do that and Russia controlled the dam at the time.
It's possible that the mines exploded on their own, but what were they doing there?

You are giving the RU far to much credit in suggesting they care whatsoever for their own troops, they have repeatedly demonstrated otherwise, starting with shooting their own soldiers for whatever random reason, and following it up with the boast that they can get more. The dam served one primary purpose, to provide water for 60-80% of UA grain production. The road and the power plant were nice, but it was all about Soviets mastery of nature nonsense. In early March 2014, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, stated he did not regard Turchynov as the legitimate Ukrainian President.
Following attacks on law enforcement, security institutions and capture of government buildings, Turchynov offered for the unmarked militants with Russian flags to lay down arms and vacate government buildings for negotiations. Upon refusal, he finally sanctioned a big scale anti-terrorist operation headed by the Security Service of Ukraine. Earlier on 8 April 2014 another short-term anti-terrorist operation led by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine freed up government buildings in Kharkiv.
On 13 April 2014, Russia confirmed that it began a large scale military exercise in the Rostov, Belgorod and Kursk Oblasts, on the border with Ukraine, involving more than 8,000 troops and which would continue until the end of March. In April 2014, Russia announced another military exercise in the same region (Southern Russia).
In other words, for guys like you wanting to rewrite history: Russia supported the destabilisation of Ukraine by not recognising Turchinov, by supporting separatists and by performing military excercises close to the border, which led to Russian military being directly involved in the Donbass conflict.

Washington Post: December 29, 2022. Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Kovalchuk said that Ukraine struck a test strike at the Novaya Kakhovka dam (HIMARS). He said that the test was successful.
May 11 2023, the head of the administration of the Novokakhov City District Vladimir Leontiev - Ukrainian troops shelled the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and did not allow to carry out repair work there.
As reported by IA REGNUM, earlier Russia distributed a letter to the UN Security Council with a call to prevent the destruction of the dam Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power plant by Ukrainian troops, as thousands of people may suffer as a result.

To collapse a dam, you need to blow it up near the soleplate. An attack coming from the top does nothing. And HIMARS is not powerful enough anyway. The dam was occupied by Russians, they blew it up, end of.

    • @wwoods66
      @wwoods66 Год назад

It isn't really. The reactors were shut down months ago; they're producing heat from decaying fission products, but it's a tiny fraction of what they produced at full power. They just need a small amount of water circulating to take away that heat.
At this point, the risk is that -- as with the dam -- the plant will be accidentally or deliberately damaged when the Russians withdraw from it.

Given it was destroyed without multiple explosion being noted it was definetely not a missile strike or artillery (for example the bridge west of it took several HIMARS missile strikes before it partially collapsed) so if it was done by military action it was mined and detonated in a single blast.
Considering Russia destroyed the superficial part of the dam months on the Ukrainian controlled side of the river months ago it's either cracks from that explosion that burst open from pressure or the Russian army who unlike the Ukrainian army can access the middle of the dam has mined it and detonated it.
It's a 50/50 considering this both helps the Russian forces in the short run since the river is impossible to cross now so they don't have to defend that region for a while and it hurts them because a bunch of Russian soldiers were hit by the flood, not many but if it was planned they would have left beforehand
