Making a Victorian Bustle gown in a day

- I actually recorded this over a year ago, but forgot about it and found the footage only now! The dress is long sold now but it is nice to revisit the last minute project :-)

I thought you might be interested in a dress I own. I think I could make it in a day. It was made and worn by my great-grandmother, who was born in 1843 and died in January of 1883. It is a very simple summer dress, made and worn by an Iowa farmer's wife, but it is interesting particularly as it shows how a lady in modest circumstances could achieve the fashionable look. I have a photo of it, but I don't know how to post it in a comment. The dress is made of brown polished cotton with tiny white polka dots. The skirt has one flounce about ten inches wide, and is simply gathered to a band at the waist. The bodice is made like a jacket. It is obvious that it was meant to wear over a blouse or with a jabot to fill in the front. The bustle effect is achieved by the back of the jacket, which has a large gathered sort of bag attached to the tail of the jacket. I imagine it was originally worn with a short bustle frame. (When I displayed it on a dress form at a genealogical fair I simply stuffed the bustle with plastic bags.) It has no lining, little interfacing except on the revers of the jacket, and shows me how women managed to dress and be fairly comfortable in the hot, humid, Iowa summers.

Given this outfit is from the 1890's, and also given that you grew up in Poland, it raises the question, What were the women of what is today Poland wearing back in the 1890's? Something similar to this, or something quite different? And if different, what were they like?
The outfit is 1886-88
And polish women, those who could afford it, followed European fashions at the time
I've not tried to wear the bodice without a blouse under, but in hot weather it's better for the health, I guess. And if there's matching jewellery (in which I'm in search of at the moment) the victorian bustle is also ready for a bright sunny day. Bodices we’re not worn with blouses but with corset covers. Blouse was worn instead of a bodice in some cases, getting more popular with time

This is one of my favorite channels on RUclips, your work is so beautiful and I've learned so much about historical fashion. I have always desperately wanted an ACCURATE and not costume-y Edwardian or Victorian gown, and when I can I'll save up and commission one if you open up bespoke again!

OMG - you had an entire bustle skirt cut, interlined, serged and sewn and the bodice entirely cut out and you say calmly, "Well, now it's ... 11:00 o'clock...." 😯You did all that in AN HOUR AND A HALF?!?!! You're amazing.

I have always been a fan of the Victorian era. Very fond of the Crazy Quilts from that time I even taught myself how to make some different laces to embellish my quilts! I am in awe of you and guts you have to take on this project. I was blown away when started to try it on! 😊 I am disabled and am unable to stand on my own and if could I would salute you!! There are days when I think the natural form style was quite pretty, but then I see a bustle dress from either side of that period and I will never understand what came over the Victorians for those brief years when the natural form was in fashion.

I am slowly getting into historical inspired dressmaking on an amateur level, and I’m so happy to know that you do a lot of work on machines. It’s very encouraging to know that someone as talented as you doesn’t necessarily hand sow all the edges and stuff like that and still end up with beautiful pieces. I’m also very impressed you made this in a day! 🎉
There is no need- for this period machines were in generic use anyway. For earlier/ I need to consider my clientele base- not everybody can afford hand stitched garments.

Have you seen the show, The Gilded age? Takes place in the 1800's NY.
For people who study the history of costume in detail, "1800s" is usually perceived as "1800-1810" 😁

Can a smaller Victorian bum pad be worn without a corset or a stay, whether it was done historically or not?
I assume it can, but I wonder if you know of any possible problems.
You could go without a pad but you would it be without a corset

@@josephnebeker7976of course you can wear them without a corset, why would you assume that it would be "unsafe"? It has nothing to do with saftey to wear a corset. And yes, there are much smaller bump pads, you don't have to wear a cage.
