    I still consider Chris Jericho's Y2J debut in the WWF is one of the best

    I was lucky to see both Chris Jericho and Lance Storm when they wrestled in SMW. I saw them wrestle Well Dunn (The Southern Rockers) in a Penalty Box Match at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta, Georgia. That was awesome to see.

    I read his 1st book a long time ago & it sounded like Cornette's promotion was at the right place at the wrong time. It was great for Jericho to be part of a US-based company in that early-mid 90s period but bad for Corny setting up his business in that dry pre-Attitude Era.

    • @richiehunt5097
      @richiehunt5097 6 лет назад +11

      Sorta. SMW's problem was getting TV. ECW's TV cost $5k per week. And TV stations were at that point where they didn't even want wrestling even with the big ratings. I liked SMW, but it's not God's gift to wrestling that failed simply because of the timing. But it was slowly turning into a darn good territory with a lot of very sound workers. Problem with is while I agree with Corny on most of his wrestling philosophies, I don't think he could hit the home run and get the major babyface superstar that could carry a company. He's so averse to thinking outside of the box or possibly hot shotting the territory that he basically created a nice developmental type territory in the end.

    • @trillville3503
      @trillville3503 6 лет назад +7

      Maybe if Jericho would of stayed for 3 yrs in SMW the promotion would of been better but a lot of the talent there were in the twilight of their careers or most of the young talent there that was their career highlight except New Jack & Lance & Chris plus a young Glen Jacobs right?

    • @notchinham316
      @notchinham316 6 лет назад +5

      Part of the reason is the area itself. Corny had problems with customers when New Jack and Mustafa became tag champions (the de-facto main event titles since SMW heavily promoted on tag teams).

You would have never believed that Chris would be good as he became on mic. I remember one where they were in motel with Lance trying to get Chris out of bed to work out. It was set up like Chris was out Al night while Lance was in resting up and studying tapes. Some really stupid shit. Had no bearing on anything they were doing at time. Had it been introduction video or the such maybe makes sense. Letting you know it's a serious worker paired with party boy but they had been in promotion several weeks and we're already in angle.

      lol...cornette makes you believe he is the genius of wrestling in his podcasts, and if he would book something it would be an instant classic. In reality 99% of his stuff was either utter garbage or corny as fuck (no pun intended)
      And because there were 2 good ones amongst all the wrestlers he signed he is a genius talent scout...sure...
      If he would ever book a fucking show it would be garbage, guaranteed...
      His by far greatest accomplishment and claim to fame is his shoot interview and podcast work. But don't let it fool you and get the notion that everything he did in the past was bigger, better and more important than it really was, or that he has the ability to do great things in the future.

    • @Matt-cr4vv
      @Matt-cr4vv Год назад

      Meh I don’t think there’s issues in how it’s aged. Corny hasn’t really been saying that Jericho wasn’t a star or wasn’t great. He’s more so locked in that he’s gone alone with a lot of bad ideas and failed to adapt his in ring style to his age more than anything. Jim’s issues with Chris largely stem from the fact that he thinks Chris is so good that he’s upset with what he’s done in AEW. And I can agree with that. Jericho has remained very good talent wise in AEW but his character and stories have left a lot to be desired for me.

    I've never really seen why people think chris jericho is great, I mean he's a good wrestler and a good promo, but great? I don't think so, "aGAIN" and "ayatollah of rock n rolla" ugh very lame and corny, plus y2j? really? has anybody ever explained that? hes gonna shut computers down when he's in the ring?? ...he's just not a main eventer, but they pushed him as one, I guess he just knew the right people at the right time, he had no business being in the same presence and ring with the likes of stone cold and the rock, but when he came the attitude era was dying down, so he benefited from that... I put him in the same category as hhh, edge and jbl, where ur like really? these guys are the champion now? I guess I was just spoiled with the greatest wrestlers in the greatest time in wrestling history, those guys set the bar pretty damn high

    • @Matt-cr4vv
      @Matt-cr4vv Год назад

      Y2J was just a play on the times. Y2K was the mystery of the new millennium and Jericho was the wrestler of the new millennium. It’s prettt simple to get the concept just seems you’re overthinking it because you didn’t like it. It seems that you evaluate somebody’s talent based off of if you liked their character or not. Someone may not be your cup of tea but they doesn’t take away their talent. But he’s seen as great largely because of how long he’s remained relevant and his ability to continually change his character over the years instead of staying the same thing. But you seem to only evaluate talent based on if you like a character so I can see if you don’t really see that aspect of why people think he’s great.
