I was just perusing the various videos on this site and yours caught my attention. I'm NOT a wheelchair user but I learned so much on what extra work is needed for wheelchair users. I will be much more aware and empathetic when I travel since I really travel with 'tunnel' vision and need to be more aware and patient with the handicappable community. :-)

I wish wheelchair and other aid related things were affordable. I love my wheelchair- I have an off-road all terrain chair I love it out of everything I own it’s literally my favourite...but I really wish I could afford to make it more useable for me like I’d get E-motions if I could afford anything id pretty much just ask for them and a few adjustments to my foot rest and that would be about it.

    • @Wheels2Walking
      @Wheels2Walking  5 лет назад +17

Yeah I agree with the expense of these things. They’re too much and most insurance doesn’t cover them. However, I’ve heard there are grants for certain things. I believe it’s worth a look into

    • @MrSmitheroons
      @MrSmitheroons 4 года назад +2

Excuse me if this is ignorant, but I know they are making less-expensive things these days with like, 3D printing. They can make a stethoscope that usually costs over $100 for about $3 or less I think with 3D printing. And it works as well as the best "gold standard" stethoscope. Someone wrote a scientific paper about it.
I think there must be a way to design these things to work properly, really well, but less expensive. I think it's hard to make a profit, since so few of these chairs are made. So to make a profit, each individual one has to cost a lot. But instead, if it's more of a DIY or not-for-profit/free design, then somebody could make it cheaper, since the goal wouldn't be to make a profit, just a good design with high function/reliability for a low price.
Hopefully someone can take an "open hardware" approach, to bring the price down? Bonus: with all the original design files being released, people could tweak it more easily for each person's unique specifications and needs.
I guess it's just an idea. I wish I personally knew how to do this, and then I think I would do it myself.

I agree with you, Em. Anything that has "Medical" attached is uber expensive and, for the majority of us, it's unobtainable. I can't even get a decent chair. Im an amputee and the one leg I have doesn't work very well. My chair is all I have to get around and do things. Maybe I have the wrong people helping me out? IDK. I become very frustrated when I see other people with custom chairs and I'm stuck with the garbage I get.

I literally just got home from picking up my very first custom wheelchair when I saw this video.
I would love to see a full video about picking a chair, options, accessories, etc. For most of the process I’ve felt like I had to do all of my own research to make any progress, and knowing the technical differences between two different options doesn’t mean I understand how those differences will play out in real life. And even if one option is a little better, is it better enough to justify the difference in cost/weight/whatever? I’m fine making tradeoffs to find the best tools for me and my lifestyle, but I have to know what those tradeoffs actually are first. Getting my first custom wheelchair has been really intimidating because there was so much to it and once the order form was sent out all I could do was hope everything was close enough.
Unrelated, but thanks for making a point of asking about catheters for women. I don’t need them myself, but it’s really easy to overlook options that don’t directly apply to you and I’m sure the information will be super helpful for someone else down the road.
Now to look at new leashes for the dog...

I think it would be a lot more ethical when showing one of these products to discuss it's price. Let's be honest here, very little of the tech is new, very little of it is more complicated then any modern mountain bike yet they are priced like second hand cars. Same goes for parts. The price gouging needs to start being called out.

Wheels2Walking I really wish I had either a place to go to or someone to meet me to get the best wheelchair for me and my life. That powered trike. Also power assist add ons for manual wheelchairs needs to have more simple options. The “tank chairs” would be absolutely awesome to have here in West Virginia, it’s just way to expensive for someone with a very limited income. It’s crazy how much we take “the shortest distance between two places” for granted before being in put in a wheelchair. Spending time looking for a way to get in to buildings or having to go around areas because your wheels sink into the soft ground or you exhaust yourself trying to go 10 feet in a grassy area...

The smart drive is something I'm highly likely to get for my uncle. He recently had an injury caused by repetitive strain caused by pushing the wheelchair. This'll let him move without having to use his muscles as much. It doesn't sell at my country but it does at a country nearby, and it's only about a 23 hour drive away. All I need to do now is plan a road trip and we're set.

I would recommend it for those wanting an outdoor lifestyle, or otherwise for individuals who want to go hunting. Powerful enough to get through the densest brush and able to conquer various types of terrain. Just got a snowplow for it recently as well and gave that a test. It really does look like a tank with it on.
    Edit:
To add some details: the one I have, the ST, has a 5 hour battery life, can stand up to 8 inches of water, and can go both up and down fairly steep terrain by shifting the chair forwards or backwards to change the center of gravity.

I really like this guy and his openness about his disability/abilities. I wanted to say it takes away stigma about people with his condition, but, after checking the definition of the word. I wouldn't agree with that comment.
So, I'll say I'm happy he is a very open person who iswilling to inform the community about things that the average person probably doesn't know.
I have had friends over the years (surprisingly.) Some of them had disabilities, but, I never treated them different, unless it was a request by them. They are just as normal as the rest of us. You would cut to the front of the line if you could get away with it. Maybe that sounded wrong. IDK, My point was they are happy, so be happy for them. Technology has came a loooong way.

At present, apart from asking people to put my shopping into bags, that I've hung onto the back of my chair, the only solution was to wear a backpack on my front. I think it is awesome that there are such creative people to improve people’s experiences in their daily life. Just because there is one tool, which a large number of people uses in their daily life, doesn’t mean that updates and new innovations are not helpful. The smartdrive is most definitely cool and will improve your quality of life for many reasons but my 2 top examples are 1- if you have a shoulder injury, you won't have to rely on someone to push you around and 2nd is that it will save your shoulders for the long term.
My only complaint in my many years of owning a smartdrive is the watch!! I've had 3 go bad for the same reason. Which has to do with 1 of 2 reasons and maybe both - I live in Arizona so I think that it has to do with the heat or sweat making it's way into the watch.
This seams like a defect not user error or the age of the watch. Mine is currently broken and for several reasons I'm not in the position to perches a new and permobil doesn't work with you on resolving this. Something to keep in mind.

I love it so much I have to go two out of three days despite how much pain I get when being out and about a lot and traveling, and the PEM from outer space afterwards. It’s worth the extra pain and fatigue to visit an abilities expo!
In 2015 at the expo I found the kind of wheelchair cushion I’ve been using since shortly after the expo (I’m on a StimuLITE Contoured XS)
And in 2017 I happened to try a wheelchair with Surge rims on it, and I liked those so now I have Surge rims as of October 2018. At this years expo I tried the Smart Drive to see if that could be something for me due to my shoulder and hand pain and times of feeling totally out of power to push myself, now I’m in the process of getting a Smart Drive (need medical statement that there’s no medical reason I can’t drive a motorized chair of any kind, I drive a car so that document is really just for the bureaucratic bullshit!) Have an appointment with my new GP now on the 11th and it’s actually the son of the GP I’ve had for almost 8 years so I’m hoping he will trust his fathers assessment of me along with making up his own impression as well, he’s said to be a very good doctor who’s loved by both patients and colleagues alike so I’m hopeful!
Now I just can’t wait for the 2021 edition of the abilities expo in Gothenburg! Hopefully going there with a Smart Drive on my chair to make it easier to get around. Hoping to see some catheter companies next time too, this year none of them were there. It’s just nice to see the different types of catheters (and surprise surprise I was introduced to self catheterize myself in the 2013 expo when a consultant panicked a bit about me not going often enough. Took until I think autumn 2017 before I actually got to see a urologist, and now I have catheters at home myself, of the same brand that I initially tried: LoFric Sense! Nice and compact but I’m going to ask if I can please try the Speedicath Compact instead or have both at hand because I do love the format of the compact, it’s just for some reason I’m more likely to bleed when having used the Speedicath Compact vs the LoFric Sense, I have noticed that Speedicath Compact seem to have a slightly bigger tip than the rest of the catheter though, but it really shouldn’t make that much difference one would think, I’m using Ch14 catheters either way, flow in a Ch12 is just too slow (I even managed to get a complete blockage in a Ch12 Foley catheter in less than 36 hours of it being put in (it was standard procedure for the surgery I was having- hysterectomy)
Sometimes though, it’s tempting to just ask my local clinic to put in a foley on me, it was heaven to not have to get up to pee and my pattern vary between peeing every few minutes to only peeing twice in a day, and it doesn’t matter if I just a catheter or pee on my own, I still have to get up to do it

@@Wheels2Walking I liked her business model, buying products we can use that weren't necessarily designed for that purpose. It's something I've been doing since I was a kid.

Hi :) I have a birth defect called Spina Bifida, I'm paralyzed from the waist down and use a wheelchair. I actually found your channel by looking up wheelchair bearings because I needed to learn how to fix mine. I had NO clue there was even such a thing as an abilities expo!! This was fascinating to watch and I need more of this, lol I want to try all the things you showed and it really gives me hope for our society!

I LOVE the Action track chair, in fact, was the very first "tester" of that chair! but you cant plow snow worth a damn with one! you MIGHT be able to clear up to 1" of very fluffy snow from a very small driveway with one.

When I was a kid in the 80's,, or even in my 20's after years of wheelchair use I still had no interest in mobility stuff, a chair was a chair, but these days the tech and options available, not just for chairs but other stuff, has made it really interesting.

I can recommend the leash, I got it to use with my walker and because I have a movement disorder so I was always worried about dropping the lead/leash. This works. There was no worry about that at with this style. I am really happy to see there is a place I can buy a replacement for my old one when I need it.
Thank you for this awesome video!

I just got the Ki catalist 5 vx and I have to say, I am so impressed! It feels so much more like a ridged frame than a folding frame
It is super light, it rolls smooth and i don't need nearly as many pushes to keep up with my able friends
10/10 would recommend anything by Ki mobility!

Personally I have never seen a wheelchair bound person - ever! I am not wheelchair bound either, there are no chains, straps or anything like that binding me to any of the 3 wheelchairs I have (I sometimes use a safety belt though, but that is not equal to being «bound»). I love my wheelchairs though, they enable doing a lot of things that would be literally impossible, if I didn’t have these neat technical aids❣️ If it hadn’t been for these chairs and the accessible van, I would have been stuck at home. So, again, I am not bound to any wheelchair (bet your friend isn’t either!), my wheelchairs are more like having wings, if you ask me - since they can change people’s situation a lot - all for the positive❣️ Just sayin’❣️🚼♿️⏭♥️

Its always interesting to play tetris with wheelchairs at summercamp when we have a ton of wheelchairusers and some of them don't have folding chairs. We have big cars with a lot of space, but if you need to fit 3/4 wheelchairs and some other walking aids into a car it gets difficult :) but we are all experienced tetris players now. And sometimes one wheelchair gets broken up into 2 cars (wheels in 1, rest in the other) :) its always fun
