This kind of situation is very familiar.
Planetside 2 is currently experiencing this. Less people are playing because there's nothing new coming (for non membership players, that is) and the players left are some of the best. Australia's server was running on nothing, and was shutdown. The Australians were sent to either the asian server or American server, the latter of which is starting to experience a similar thing to the Australian server.
The most i can say to prevent this is to promote as much as you can if you really do love this game. stream it and make it known. Maybe even try to get a few codes for new players that'll give em a couple of skins and whatnot. just keep it alive.
