@@Juliaflo Yes 'Thunderball' is a cracker too. Doesn't quite have the impact of Goldfinger but the brass parts are phenomenal. The older themes are definitely the best. 'From Russia With Love' is another belter.

My absolute favourite Bond theme and film. Classic
For me personally this is the finest Bond theme. The opening few mesmerising bars with the trombones is spellbinding. Put John Barry's genius score,together with Shirley Basseys dynamic voice and you have the perfect recipe..Fantastic

Goldfinger was the James Bond movie that really emphasized the 'super spy' element in the 007 movies; it was also the first to introduced the gadget equipped car, as well as Shirley Bassey as the singer of a 007 theme song, followed by Diamonds are Forever in 1971, and Moonraker in 1979.
Fun Data: Dame Shirley made a song to Quantum on Solace (you can hear it on RUclips), but it was rejected and replaced by Jack White and Alicia Keys song. 🙄🙄🙄

I just saw Goldfinger in a classic movie palace today. When the Goldfinger theme came on through the extraordinary sound system with Shirley Bassey singing, it gave me chills, because it felt like Shirley was singing in the theater. It is the greatest theme song ever! 👍👍👍👍👍

@@chrisevans9779 It's very jazzy and classical at the same time. In a theater with an excellent sound system, the very first part of the opening just lifts you out of your seat and then comes the stylish muted trumpet like something from Duke Ellington. 😻
I remember when as a little kid, about 9 or 10 going to see 'You Only Live Twice' at my local cinema and hearing Nancy Sinatra sing the title theme and it had the same effect you talk of. I think John Barry's orchestrations had a lot to do with it too. Love his 'Chase' theme from 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and 'Midnight Cowboy' theme as well. He was a master of movie music.

Yes, especially Ennio, his music puts you smack bang in a wild west desert. Love Henry Mancinis' 'Moon River' and theme from 'Newhart' and Bernie inspired the strings on 'Eleanor Rigby'. Lalo Schifrin is another,..'Mission Impossible' So many . You don't get these kind of people anymore.

I think you are right. "Goldfinger" was the first Bond film I ever so, I was 6 years old. I will never forget it. To top the experience my dad bought me a small British replica of Bond's famous Aston Martin. Those were the days! ♥👍👍👍
Just listened to 'licence to kill'. It's not bad but you can see the chord progression is a bit of a rip-off of this track.

You left out: "the murderous, money-hungry Auric Goldfinger [AU is the symbol for Gold in the Chemical Table of Elements], the gorgeous girls: Shirley Eaton ("Jill Masterson", doomed to die, by asphyxiation, stunningly painted in gold!), and sister-playing Tania Mallet ("Tilly Masterson"); the steel-brimmed, hat-killing Oddjob, the attack on Fort Knox," etc.! What else could possibly top not only the song, but the whole film as the best in the entire James Bond film collection? Which film? Trivia note: Shirley Eaton is alive at 85 (Jan. 12, 1937).

Appreciate the comments for TJ: truly, he is an icon. But Bassey is the original, and thus the icon for this theme. By such definition, all others are second. Some may prefer a male voice, but for this I prefer Bassey's female voice. Substitute any other voice, and the theme loses its soul. The 1st recording was 1963, in studio: 60 years ago. No way the tech 60 yrs ago comes close to today. In fact, all such recordings had audio compression, to ensure the average stylus could track the groove. Using original tapes helps for 'remastering' into 4k, but these too were limited: the medium and the microphones; plus the preferences of the audio techie. Doubtful we will see the likes of Bassey and TJ again; 60 years of GMO is likely to ensure humans have changed permanently. Besides, how many people in our woke world today can appreciate such talents and music?

Those James Bond films were so good to watch and enjoy. They were based on the novels of that character, but were both exciting, full of adventures, and with a great suspense. I saw most of them and still remember them over fifty years later, and I think the best James Bond was Sean Connery
I was in grade school when these movies came out. My dad was in Army Intelligence so he was my James Bond. Could you imagine what it would have been like to take a Literature Course from Ian Fleming?

Sean Connery and the 60s feel of the movies are the best. The songs, the style, everything. I also like that under the 1960s, women started to become very rebell and cocky, but then Sean Connery still dominate them with his classic masculinity.
I think that if the James Bond franchise will continue in the future, they will problebly make James Bond movies that are more retro, potrayed in the 1960s.
Funny. As much as they could throw a 60’s throwback…….the music has a way of doing it on its own no matter what modern esthetic they use. We will see will James Bond returns.

I really love this song. It is probably the only song about the villain, Auric Goldfinger. The lush strings and bellicose horns and how each weaves through the chord changes is memorable and unique.

Amusingly ironically Gert Froebe, the versatile actor who portrays the ruthless Goldfinger, had a year earlier in the D-Day film The Longest Day (1962) played an innocent patriotic French Resistance courier, gunned down while bicycling in his seaside village.
This and GoldenEye are the best Bond themes. The vibes are just outta this world.
