    If you're going to use Yngwie method be sure to lightly anchor your pinky on the pick guard.....it is very difficult to be accurate unless your pick is entering the strings at the same depth always.

      Ring finger not pinky

      I tend to do that alot, sometimes wrap my pinky around the high e but that's more for rhythm.

    Playing fast is ok, but playing a melody fast is another level. That's what separates AL from everyone else.

    • @Zwampert
      @Zwampert 3 года назад +1

      Well I never disputed that Al’s technique wasn’t originally his. He used it during the 70s like for example when he played live with Paco and John. But it’s just interesting to where it came from. Paul also uses the same ascending 6 pattern as well.

      Don't forget Vinnie Moore either you can hear Al's influence in a ton of Vinnie's songs Al being one of his main influences. I hear more in his playing that sounds like Al then I've ever heard In Paul's playing.

    Al Di Meola says... no movement from elbow, all from wrist...but if you look at the first clip where he rattles across all 6 strings at quite a pace, it's pretty clear there's lots of elbow movement. He probably doesn't even realise.

    • @scallionhead418
      @scallionhead418 3 года назад

      That's what I figured too lol.

    • @briumphbimbles
      @briumphbimbles 2 года назад +10

      The movement isn't coming from the elbow at all its more that it is a secondary motion as a result of the wrist movement. Which is exactly what he said. Hes not saying you need to be rigid hes saying that all of the movement needs to come from your wrist. If your body moves around that movement then thats fine, as it should because it should be completely relaxed.

    • @CaptainPupu
      @CaptainPupu Год назад +8

      It's the kinetic energy that result from wrist movement. It is physically impossible to move onlu wrist when your arm is rigid as a corpse. There are veins and bones and muscles going throughout, they contract and expand when moving. He is not saying cut blood circulation, he is saying focus on wrist moving, not arm.

    • @bitburg40
      @bitburg40 10 месяцев назад

      Whoever told you that there are veins and bones and muscles going throughout was full of it. Everybody knows that your picking arm is full of peanut butter, jelly and Red Bull. 🤪@@CaptainPupu

    :41 case of do as I do NOT as I say. Dude, that whole 6s groups was done with bicep muscle and tricep tension. Just look at the vid prior to him talking about it. He's doing it with his arm. Malmsteen is better (imo). His runs are more varied and spread wider than Al's. Al's picking stays very localized. groups of 3s and 6s mostly.

    • @mikestevens5512
      @mikestevens5512 8 месяцев назад

      Your wrong Al has far superior technique, much more melodic as well.
      Because doesn't rely on an anchor he can transcend strings more efficiently
      Within a phrase.

    • @ruffytrabe1432
      @ruffytrabe1432 6 месяцев назад

      Yes. Al never played a pentatonic run in his life, because he needs a two-note-per-string -technique to do this. For those who are not familiar with theory: the ending riff of Mahavishnu's "one word" is a pentatonic run downwards in a minor in a metre with 13 beats. In my opinion Al cannot play that.

      The technique of Yngwie is better

    • @woutervandijk9961
      @woutervandijk9961 2 месяца назад

      It's true a lot of Al's fastest licks are groups of three and six. However his asymmetrical runs are very impressive at those speeds , which he achieves with the way he angles his pick to switch between inside and outside picking. He often goes down the scale in groups of four, which, unless you do very well prepared position switches, requires constant switching between odd and even groupings of notes. Yngwie mostly plays even groupings which is much easier to play fast. I doubt Yngwie could play the infamous intro lick of Race with the devil on spanish highway for instance. You are right though that it seems like Al seems to tense up his arm a lot when he accelerates, it is not all relaxed wrist action.

    • @TruthSurge
      @TruthSurge 2 месяца назад +1

      @@woutervandijk9961 I think Yngwie could definitely handle all the stuff in that tune. Yngwie even does some economy picking. I do not think Al does ANY economy picking. just alt picking. But back in the 70s when it came out, it was hot stuff. It still sounds good and I play a bit myself but I think I could learn it and get it down inside of say 2 weeks. I don't hear anything he's doing that scares me. No super wide intervals. No odd speep picking arpeggios. Nothing super fast. Thing is though... I just don't want to learn it. Not my cup of tea. That flamenco stuff Paco DL did was REALLY amazing. I think DiMeola would have a b of a time trying to replicate some of DeLucia's licks. Then what about McLaughlin? He was crazy good at alt picking. or IS. I think Al DiMeola is really good and is definitely one of the guitar greats if you just say electric guitar. Prob in the top 50 somewhere. But that list should be constantly changing each year. Better hindsight and better players are emerging even today. Matteo Mancuso plays CIRCLES around Al but Al did a little jam with him and they all know they are basically outclassed technically by Mancuso. Steve Vai knows it and says as much. Shawn Lane was DiMeola X3 plus legato and super wide intervals and hammers from nowhere and insane groupings of 5 and 7 and 6 and 9 just whenever he felt like it. Always someone better. I think Mancuso has probably one of the best playing techniques of any player alive today. Maybe not counting Gambale. He's a total freak of nature. Anyway... opinions......

    The technique that is transferable to acoustic is the superior technique. Guys like Malmsteen & Gamble are great electric players but fairly unimpressive on acoustic. Al's well deserved multiple Guitar Player Magazine awards as best electric & acoustic guitarist speak for themselves. No smoke & mirrors, no contest. Beyond that, Al is an elite composer, most important of all. Only an insecure person would post a video like this.

      Agree with you. It’s probably due to language barrier because all comments that slammed Yngwie came from non English name account, so they might not really understand what Yngwie meant. Yngwie actually praised Al’s technique but it just doesn’t work for him. Al is strict alternate picker while Yngwie is the other way around. Wrist and pick angle will surely differ.
