Honestly the "fake ansem is actually xehanort's heartless" isn't that confusing of a plotpoint. It was confusing the first time I played it, but only because the general plot of KH2 is actually built like a mystery you have to gradually solve. Things kind of make sense towards the end of it. The only thing that doesn't is how and why riku turned into ansem's body and why a big explosion reverted him back to normal. (to this day, this hasn't been explained. It's just a dumb plottwist for the sake of plottwists. Classic Nomura brainrot in action.) It's everything AFTER kingdom hearts 2 that completely stops making sense. Birth by sleep had that whole vanitas/Ventus situation, along with the existence of the unversed being glossed over. But overall that game still at least has some semblance of a plot you could follow. Dream Drop Distance and KH3, however, completely drop the ball. Nothing in these games makes any sense whatsoever. Nomura thought it would be funny to have sora not understand anything about what's going on, but it's genuinely frustrating to see the horseshit writing he plasters all over every single game he has ever made. (The story of kh1 wasn't written by nomura, it was written by a number of Square veterans of the final fantasy franchise. Nomura was just the clothings-designer-turned-director, and the kh series takes a nosedive once said writers were gone.)
