The accent is perfectly understandable when you develop an ear for it. The speaker is Indian after all and thanks for posting in English. The content is what matters and this is laid out succinctly and in perfect english grammar. So no reason whatsoever to make negative comments.
I am not sure what was eating the previous commentator Sankar Das. Racism has no place in philosophy and just brings everything down to a base level of emotion and ignorance.

Yes, the accent was a bit challenging in the beginning but after some point I've adapted to it. Very well presented and explained. And I'm amazed to learn ancient atheism from Indian culture; this is something I've only recently discovered.

I agree with Dr. Sethy, when he says that there are no existing written texts remaining from the writes of the Charvaka/Lokayata school of thought. Thus all statements about Charvaka/Lokayata school of thinking is based on elements gathered from the opponents of Charvaka/Lokayata school of thinkers. For a detail review of the topic, I refer you to “Studies on the Charvaka/Lokayata” by Dr. Ramkrishna Bhattacharya. It is a compilation based on logic, history, and rational reasoning. Enjoy!
Carvak school admits to the existence of Vedas as a body of literature However, they do not consider the “knowledge in the Vedas” to be of any special origin but simply man-made. Charvak school does not say “self/state of consciousness” is nonexistent. The Charvaks do experience the “self”. They state that the self/consciousness arises from the living body. In other words, “the experience of self” cannot exist without the living body. It is true that Charvaks do not believe in heaven, hell, or karma because there is absolutely no physical evidence of their existence.
I deviate from the “straw man” proposition of Charvaka when the opponents of Charvaka state that Charvakas wanted people to “eat, drink, and be merry”. No, Charvakas only believe in the existence of THIS life, thus it would be incumbent upon the believers of Charvaka philosophy to make THIS life as beautiful and as fulfilling a possible. The key to the fulfillment and happiness is not eating ones self into obesity, sloth, and a heart attack. Like wise, it would be stupid to have a fulfilling life without care for the fellow man. Charvakas were pragmatic people. Perhaps the world would be a much more beautiful place if we focused our attention on THIS world, THIS life, and THIS place, not on some imaginary places (heaven, hell, or karmic web) which have no proof of existence.

Drink word needs to be explained specifically. As far as my reading goes, I have not seen anywhere Lokayata philosophy says drink intoxicants, because it harns body and for caravaka body is final thing.
What carvaka says live happily, drink curd n ghee even by borrowing. Because curd n ghee are good for health n body.

Dear Dr. Satya Sundar Sethy, Thanks for posting videos on Indian Philosophy. I really like your videos but having some difficulty in understanding your accent hence missing some important words. It is also because the words we use in philosophy are not very common ones. Could you please add English subtitles also to your videos. Regards

09:38 Charvaks did rely on other sources of knowledge, but not completely. 22:05 contradicting yourself using red herring fallacy, changing their statement that they rejected all other pramanas and only accepted Pratyaksha pramana. which is not right.
Just try to think like Charvakas: Practically they used all other forms of Paramanas, but relied heavily on Pratyaksha to verify information received from (not so reliable) anumana, shabda, upamana, arthapatti pramanas.
    They must have used
    1. Anumana (inference): They rejected Vedas by saying Vedas have filthy rituals like Ashwamedha Yagna where the queen has to sleep with the horse. They did use inference (anumana): "if such morally corrupt practices are in a book, then that book can't be from Ishwara but it must be from vile Humans." Don't you think they knew that if they drink water, their thirst will subside? This anumana is correct most of the time but again it is still not 100% true in all places and all times. Hence they used it practically to verify it with direct perception. Do you think a Chavaka at Sunset would say only Night is the truth and sunrise is not going to happen unless we see it? Didn't they infer (know) that sun will rise again in 12-14 hours after sunset? They inferred that Night will happen and Morning will happen again. that's why they say nature runs with its own laws.
    2. Shabda (Testimony): if their charvaka friend told them "Vedas have useless words like Jarfari, Turfari" then other Charvakas must have relied on this information to verify the vedas. if someone said, there's somebody on the door, don't you think they would go out and (verify) see who is at the door? or just rejected the words of the informer, by saying, "because I can't see anyone at the door from here in the room, hence there is no visitor at the door!" Laughable isn't it?
    3. Upamana (Comparison): they criticized that Vedas were written by lazy, buffoons selfish for livlihood. They were comparing Lazy fellows to Vedic authors. They said, that the three authors of the Vedas were buffoons, knaves, and demons Hence, they also used Upamana, as they compared the authors to buffoons.
Hence, just because followers of Vedas are criticizing Charvakas, by using Red Herring fallacy. It becomes easy to refute their epistemology by putting refutable statements in Charvaka's mouth (that they only used Pratyaksha Pramana).
Sarvadarshan Sangrah of Madhavacarya clearly says, that it's impossible to refute Charvaka darshan. Hence these Brahamins use logical fallacies to wrongly refute their opponents Charvakas.

@akshay pawar Charvakas were practical, pragmatic, scientific people. Naturally, when you are pragmatic and practical with scientific inclination, you will never accept mumbo jumbo by anyone. When there is no evidence of God, no evidence of something inside us called 'Atma'; only this body is Atma. There is no Soul hence, there's no moksha nor any next birth. So, obviously, the shops which sell the 'karma, rebirth, moksha' and exploit with caste system will be against scientific people like Charvakas.
All Hindus get exploited in the name of Avatar (vaishnavism) claiming to be Krishna and raping hindu devotee women and becoming business partners of his devotees or Moksha (Shakta/Shaivism) by their Gurus/Priests, by selling products and meditation programs like kundalini etc.
Vedas are created by men, do you know that your 4th veda is a later addition, there were only 3 vedas?
Nasadiya sukta talks about nobody knows who created this universe, even one who has created may not know - this is Agnosticism not anti god.
Ashwamedha - literally means killing of horse. Yes, Vedic system is corrupted because it is not clear. Upanishad/Vedanta is influenced by Buddhism and Jainism, so they stopped Animal Sacrifice seeing the non-violence of Buddhists and Jain monks.
Do you know what is Vama-marga? Left handed path in Tantra? Panch-makar (madya, māṃsa, matsya, mudrā, and maithuna). And yes, I know that Vedanta and Tantra are different.
So, *some priests* do corrupt your religion easily!?
ARYA SAMAJ may have reformed ashvamedha yagna, but they did not reformed Caste Discrimination, which is the real evil in Sanatana Dharma.

@@T75-n1m Use your brain, if you have one in your skull. If you were to not believe in any god or sould, then how would you think? Perhaps this kind of thinking is for intelligent people, not dumb followers of Charlatans.

    • @AsifAliRizwaan
      @AsifAliRizwaan 3 года назад

@akshay pawar Yes, we all know what happened to Arya Samaj Saint Swami Agnivesh by Hindutva people. Arya Samaj is trying to reform a corrupt system.
Nasadiya Sukta only shows that Vedas are just a collection of thoughts by told by different people at that time. Those are man made contradictory books, hence difference in main Ideas about Ishwara, Devatas, and unknowablity of existence even by Gods.
Re-birth is a created concept to fool people into slavery by saying you are suffering because you did bad karmas in the past and serve us better to get a better life in the next birth. This is a very cunnin way of exploitation of the poor. Vedas has no re-birth.
Upanishads / Vedanta's main topic is Atma-Gyaan, which is based on the false premise that there is something call Atman apart from this body and mind. Neither there is Ishwara who can interfere in our matters nor there is Atma which can do anything apart from body / mind. All Spiritual practices are basically mental exercises and hypnotism based suggestions, which leads to hallucinations. All this Kundalini, and Chakras are all fantasy and are experienced by hallucinations.
Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism believes in Karma, and Rebirth, to explain the cause of suffering in this life. But There is no re-birth, as there is no soul which comes in or goes out of a body. It is just wrong understanding. Only Body and Mind exist, like Hardware and Software.
Buddhism's criticism shows that their Religion's foundation i.e., the Karma and Cause of Suffering, is threatened by the Charvakas No God, No Soul, Everything Happend due to Random Nature's phenomenon, explanations.
Example: A butcher kills a million birds, cows, buffaloes, goats, etc. Yet he lives happily. A saint gets killed by mob thinking that the saint is a baby thief. Swami Agnivesh was attacked by public, The Ishwara of Arya Samaj did not protect him, nor his Imaginary Atma which is all powerful can save him.
Goodness is part of Nature, see videos on "animals helping animals", which Ishwara or God told them to help the other species? To be good you don't need to believe in stories, nor you need to be exploited by the story tellers (priests, gurus). Human Rights are man made laws which are anytime better than all Religious Morality. This shows that Humans are capable of better morality without any imaginary creatures or books claimed to be from God.
