Excellent video. I have read several books and watched several presentations on Indian philosophy, and the series presented by by the professor is among the best. I just want to share some of my own views on Charvaka philosophy. Charvaka philosophy as its names implies is just superficially pleasant. It is a worldview that makes my life easier, why worry about ethics when all life is all about is pleasure, why worry about where the world came from and what it is made of when life is short , why worry about science and logic when it is just guess work. Charvaka is like anti-philosophy or sophistry. It is people pretending to be intellectuals, philosophers or scientists, when really the most important thing for them is just to eat, drink and be merry and their selfish interests.
An intellectual will call this pashu prakriti. If you are a animal then no problem but if you are a human with such high degree of intellegence you are wasting that thing. Its like you have a car in working condition but dont know how to drive it, you walk from one city to another 200kms instead of learning how to drive the car.
Charvaka means the *chewer* in the Sanskrit language. There is no proof that Charvaka believed in materialism philosophically. Charvaka probably refers to cannibals. Ajita Keshakambali is the name by which the leader of the pack of Charvaka is known. Ajita means *Undefeated* . Keshakambali means *Hairy* . All of these suggest that Charvaka were no philosophers. They were very strong hairy cannibals. All of the above information is taken from Buddhist scriptures. Hindu scriptures are mostly mute about Charvaka.
@@sb.sb.sb.no vedic scripture has directly described brahman or openly claimed about a method to realize it. Vedas only teach you to break your bondages which prevent you from experiencing the truth and the Self. They advise you to follow the principle of ‘Neti-Neti’ and thus put an end to your sufferings. Once you’ll start living as a consciousness rather than a body , you would attain brahman.👍🏻
Professor Vedaparayana has explained the Charvaka philosophy very well, covering all the major points. I would like to counter the arguments posted by some of the viewers: The professor did his PurvaPaksha (background research) on Charvaka philosophy, then did the Khandan (criticism) to a small extent. His criticism was based on logic and he didn't simply reject it based on his dislike. The explanation of the philosophy was done in an unbiased manner. So, people who are calling this video as a biased one, themselves have a bias in favour of Charvaka philosophy and are unable to come up with a counter-argument and are resorting to name calling. That's my first point. Secondly, Charvaka states that pursuit of sense pleasure is the highest goal of life, which is precisely hedonism. Charvaka philosophy also rejects any type of virtue (Do whatever pleases you is the philosophy). But the law of the country doesn't teach an individual to pursue sense gratification without virtue. On the contrary, the law states the different types of punishment for it's offenders. So comparing these two is invalid, as they aren't suggesting the same thing. Thirdly, rejecting life before birth or after death doesn't make one immoral, but rejection of virtues certainly makes one immoral. Fourth, if the professor has twisted any aspect of the Charvaka philosophy then point it out instead of resorting to name calling. Fifth, modern science hasn't attained perfection in knowledge yet. So, if science accepts a part of Charvaka philosophy as of today, then it is not an evidence suggesting Charvaka and science are right. If consciousness is a product of interaction of matter then why can't life be created in a laboratory using just matter. Why a dead person doesn't have consciousness, even though he/she has the body (which creates consciousness as per Charvaka). If there is no rebirth, then the concept of Prarabdha Karma also doesn't exist. Then how do you explain the different conditions into which people are born (some are born rich/poor/good looking/average etc.) Consciousness of a person doesn't change in quantity or quality throughout his/her life, even though the body undergoes a lot of change. So how can you prove that consciousness depends on matter, when in fact, change in matter (body) cannot produce any qualitative or quantitative change in consciousness.
Rohan, The professor cannot do PurvaPaksha on a subject that is not available to us in complete form. Charvaka Philosophy is not available to us in a complete form. Only the comments by the “opponents of Charvaka Philosophy” is available. You cannot do PurvaPaksha using limited information. In order to do PurvaPaksha, you have to know the subject completely and since the subject is not available to us, PurvaPaksha cannot be done. You cannot do PurvaPaksha on a “Strawman”. Charvaka Philosophy is indeed for the summum bonum. This is not the same as hedonism. Please learn the difference by taking a course on philosophy. Philosophy itself implies that one has put a lot of thought into the subject. Charvaka Philosophy does not say “do whatever you please”. Charvaka Philosophy does not say "become a criminal by stealing or breaking the law". It couldn’t say that because, breaking the law would lead to punishment. No Charvaka Philosophy would condone bad behavior since even a fool knows that bad social behavior would lead to punishment by society. Punishment causes pain to the senses. Pain is to be avoided because it does not feel good to the senses. Charvaka Philosophy nerve says to reject virtue. Please read the life of Ajita Keshkambli who lived the most virtuous life. Modern science has not attained perfection nor is it looking for perfection and Charvaka Philosophy is not looking for perfection. However, it is a fact that modern science has given us many gifts, we have to use our brains to make the best of it. Hipocrits, who reject modern science and the technology science provides, are too eager to use the internet, airplanes, trains, refrigerators, phones, ships, cars, electricity and the list goes on and on and on… Scientific method begins with OBSERVATION, formulating a testable hypothesis, putting the question in the form of a null hypothesis with statistical parameters, conduction the experiment, and either rejecting of holding the null hypothesis based on OBSERVATION of the results. OBSERVATION is the alpha and the omega of modern science. There was a time before human flight when fools asked why humans cannot fly, before telephone when fools asked why humans cannot talk over a long range, before television when fools asked why people couldn’t be seen over long range, and before fMRI when fools asked why humans couldn’t see the functioning brain. Some of the fools went beyond asking the questions and actually pursued the scientific method to come up with solutions. Now fools are asking why consciousness cannot be generated! Just wait and see… Why does a dead person not have consciousness is the same reason a rock has no consciousness. Pursue the scientific method, and become the first to answer the question or wait for death to let others know that you exist no more. People are born into different conditions just as different raindrops fall into different conditions. It is the diversity of life that creates different conditions, learn about mutation, DNA, and evolutions, variations, natural selection and the concept will become clearer. How do you know that your consciousness doesn’t change over a lifetime? Do you feel just as you did when you were born? Change in body clearly produces change in consciousness. If you don’t believe me just stop eating and drinking for one month and see what happens. You may be gone, but your living neighbors will definitely see the changes. Try it.

There is no original source of carvaka system. Any person who comments on the carvaka system does so from a biased perspective. As far I understand carvaka system, I believe it's based on free logic, therefore any criticism labelled against the system has to be refuted on basis of free logic. Any ethics should also be put to test on basis of free logic. If the system propagates hedonism, then we must construe the same in the context of laws governing the citizenry. If I were to derive pleasure by theft or fraud, then I should also be willing to face the punishment for the same, and if I were punished as a result of my transgressions, it means I subject myself to pain by my own actions, which is not hedonistic at all. Therefore to be able to enjoy pleasure, I must do so in a way that I do not suffer pain due to my actions.
The problem with your argument is that punishment for an unlawful means of satisfying your pleasures is not necessarily guaranteed. People get away with breaking the law all the time. In fact the conviction rate for any crime in any country is low everywhere in the world. Not all crimes are reported, not all criminals are arrested, not all criminals that are arrested are sentenced, and not all criminals which are sentenced serve the full sentence. There is nothing stopping the "Charvaka" from taking a calculated risk to obtain pleasure unlawfully.
