While Purple gems are still the easiest way to build CK, the new mechanics make him way more fun.Like, I could actually see myself and some buddies making a mixed gem fight and rolling with it, rather than with old CK, where most gems were just making the fight suck harder. BTW, if you didn't notice yet, new animation came out in celebration of Klei Fest. Can't wait to see you react to it.
Fun and fact can be separated. Enjoy the new gem choices all your want but that doesn't change the fact that purples are still the best choice for progression without any added annoyance.
The main problem is still that the tactics with purple gems are the easiest and require the minimum amount of resources. However, I discovered the fact that without the pearl, this is probably my favorite fight in the game. If you insert a full red gem, this is probably the most enjoyable fight for a solo player. Some claws can be destroyed with a cannon, and due to the small number of hp crab guard, they can be safely killed before start healing. And enemy cannons can be destroyed quite easily by a boat.
I think the crab king should have different loot drops based on what gems you socket into them to give a reason for using ones that make the fight a lot harder along with using the rarer gems you could save for crafting
I think a better way to balance purple gems is to make them give the crab guards sleep resistance. Not making them immune, but make them stay asleep for a shorter time.
You're right! Apart from the fact that they, too, despawn each phase meaning we can just sleep the first group, ignore them, damage, and do the exact same thing again regardless of how strong the resistance is. We're only talking ~25 seconds here, less if you use at least one Pearl at that. The fight itself was doomed years ago the moment Klei decided to make boating the way it was.
I really like the crab king now, yeah it may be easy as hell due the pan flute, but at least it more interactive now and reasonable to beat without any "tricks" is enjoyable and that's what's important
I think purple gems should give the guards Stun / sleeping resistance all the way up to being completely immune so that way you have a reason to get creative. You could also maybe reward the player for being diverse in the gem composition Giving more loot for each unique gem That or you could simply allow the crab guards to swim so that way they're a constant issue once spawned I always hated that this fight has a meta that is literally just spamming the same gem rather than using the unique mechanics
I know it's (probably) not related to anything upcoming, but it would be kinda neat to see a reaction to the just-released 'Time Flies' short. The first time we've seen Wanda animated outside of her introduction!
I'm so glad they changed this fight because before it was the hardest fight in the game without using cheese, and not even in a fun way. The amount of practice fights I've done with a Krampus sack worth of Ice staves, Weather pains, and dark swords and Still haven't killed the man is quite frankly stupid, so having the fight be both less punishing and more interesting is a 10/10 change for me.
My issue is the frost lake he makes feels like it should last longer for the crab gaurds to feel less like a waste of time if you socket blues and purples
I really don't think this fight will ever NOT feel like a stepping stone to better things. Klei "ruined" the King the moment they had a great idea on paper but poor execution in gameplay due to how the boats work.
Hey Beard, since the Crab King got an update, I was wondering if you could help with the Celestial Tribute? I defeated the boss, used Pearl's Pearl, saw the tribute drop, and went to its initial location to get it out with a Pinchin' Winch, and there's nothing there. There is no purple glow in the water to signify its location at all. I don't know if I'm missing a step or need a Message in a Bottle or something to help find it. 😕
It sounds like you did everything you needed to because all that matters is using Pearl's Pearl on The King... Could very well be an unfortunate bug...

I really want to know what klei’s intent with this fight was. 1 person? 2? 3? More? What weapons and armor was klei expecting us to use? Did they want us to use the pan flute, because it’s been a very prevalent cheese device practically since dst came out so i’d be surprised if they didn’t see this comming. What was going through their heads with the ice sheet? Isn’t this supposed to be an ocean boss? How much is it to ask for to get crab king to not be stationary. He pretty much already was a land boss based on specific ways of fighting him pre rework, it’s just that it’s a really small piece of land. The nature of him being stationary just kills the potential he had and makes it really hard to make an engaging and enjoyable fight in my opinion.
I see all the sea stacks get destroyed at the start of the fight... What happens if you've planted sea weeds on them? Will the start of the fight automatically aggro sea weeds? Will the new ice spell aggro or damage them?

They'll probably be better than the other follower methods now that you bring it up. They were stupid strong before but I do fear that the crab guards might kill several.
I don't understand why but i feel like this fight is buggy in full release. Whenever i try to put his minions to sleep with a pan flute it rarely works, have to use it 3 or 4 times before it actually works and even then. Anybody else with this issue ?
I wish the other gems were more like the red gems. Purple gems could decrease crab sleep durarion, and make them immune at 8 gems or more to encourage mix and matching.
What would I pause for in this video that you couldn't just pause the video for itself? I take my time on segments that need them, sometimes a little too much as people have told me in the past, but a guide like this doesn't require such things.

Only problem with that is how the guards despawn each phase as well so even with some sleep resistance chances are they'll still be ignorable.

I don't believe so given how his ice attack isn't actually an attack anymore, just a spell to spawn his ice arena.

I had the same issue, @vamprascare621. After defeating the Crab King, the Celestial Tribute simply spawned on the shore instead of as a sunken object.

The old ice spell was the only thing that agroed seaweeds so that method is no longer viable.
