It is expensive...all the initial materials (including frame, design, silk) could cost about $200. But there are many people who have been practicing for years who have frames that they will gladly lend or give away, as well as pieces they may have bought or begun but are no longer interested in completing that they would also gladly give to a beginner student. I have collected a number of frames and lots of silks and designs this way. If you were to make a call out to a local Japanese embroidery community, you might have luck!

The green thread used for the leaf appears darker on the left side. Is that just because it lays differently ? Thank you, this is very interesting.

I believe it depends on where the light is coming from.

A trick: you can watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.

I would love to learn to do this but it's simply too expensive - the lessons, the material, the tools all cost more than their western counterparts. It's a shame because more people would do it... Maybe when I'm no longer a poor student

It looks like it costs more, but I did this as my first job, 40 years ago. Found patterns that I had started and not finished 40 years later. The stitching I find so much faster. When starting up again. For the frame you can use a large embroidery hoop. or make your own wood frame. Using takes to set your pattern in place. Then you can find patterns on E-bay along with the tools. I don't use the silk I use the thread that unwinds. look up Bunka with flair. Hope this helps.

You can make it less expensive to fit your needs. I discovered Japanese embroidery over 30 years ago. It took me 20 years before I bought a scroll frame more for my arthritic needs than for Japanese embroidery. I have yet to use silk thread due to the price as I find Anchor floss works just fine plus I'm a nut for using 1or 2 strands at a time as it does give a glow to my work as well as silk floss might do. You could also use a raylon floss which does give a silk-like look to your work. I tried some years ago as a 1st try effort. I wasn't happy with my embroidery, but it did glow.If you think that isn't something a Japanese embroidered would use you're wrong. I have collected several Japanese embroidery books over the years and I was shocked when I read that a few of then used rayon/cotton floss in their works and yes, these ladies were considered masters in their fields. The scroll frames can be purchased at hobby stores :Michaels, not sure about Hobby Lobby since I don't go there, but you can try A.C. Moore. Hope this helps.
