100% agreed. We’ve lost 2 dog in the last 10 years, but always bring in a new pup at about the age of 5. This way there is a maturity in the older dog that helps train the pup. It also helps with the heart break.

My heart breaks. I was just watching your videos with Goofy, I had no clue he was no longer with us. Im so sorry for your losses. Thank you for the bond you shared with your dogs that shows in your work. I have 4 dogs and coincidently they all have 3-5 year age gaps because that's when we were ready ourselves to handle more dogs. The love you shared will never fade. I hope you find healing. Thank you.

I am very sorry for your loss. If you are spiritually open, the vids of BRENT ATWATER, pet psychic/ medium, might be of help. She really knows her stuff, and helped me greatly, when I found her ~3 weeks after I lost my dog. (I lost my guy 7 3/4 years ago, so was watching vids from around that time period. She is grieving the loss of HER soul-mate dog - for the 2nd time, as he had come back to her.)
My guy had given me NUMEROUS of the pre- & after-death signs that she speaks on - that I had noted and thought either "strange", or "just like Jasper" (my dog), but I had no frame of reference to process the info.
After finding Brent's vids, I realized that my Jasper was trying to communicate with me. that he's still here, and he's okay.
He actually sleeps on me every night. I can tell where he is lying by the way that the bedding touches my body more in those places, by a slight weight (the human soul weighs 4-6 oz., and I expect a dog, slightly less, depending upon their size/ weight in real life), and by the extra warmth where he lies (I've even had to kick him off me in the summer, as it was just too hot with his - and my in-form cat's - added heat!). I have felt the energy of his spirit body outline, and catch glimpses of him at times. I have also smelled his scent/ smell at times.
Brent Atwater's vids have helped me a lot. Perhaps they may help you, too. (BTW, if you haven't washed them yet, put some of your dog's soft toys/ bedding/ clothes/ collar, etc., in a good freezer baggie, to preserve his/ her scent. It will be a great source of comfort to you to smell them in your darkest times...)
May God give you solace, and assuage your grief. Virtual hugs! (BTW, Brent is of a Christian background, and speaks on invoking the Christ light to protect yourself as you seek connection with your beloved animal.)

My husband and I had rescued an English Bulldog and an American Bulldog, Dozer and Belle. We took care if them and spent a small fortune on vet bills. We lost the two of them 6 weeks apart, one to cancer one to a stroke. We were devastated and heartbroken. At one point in time I thought I was running a hospice house and a nursing home for dogs. After all was done I needed to get a healthy puppy from a very reputable breeder for a long lived breed. We chose a Rough Coat Collie. The grief messed us up for quite a while, even affected our puppy obedience training. All is well now, but we were a mess.

I agree 100%. This past spring I lost my two elderly German Shepherds within two months of each other. The loss was devastating. Ten years ago, same thing happened. I lost two elderly dogs within three months of each other. It seemed my dogs were so bonded to each other, they didn't want to go on without the one that passed away. I recently got a new puppy. The dog I already had is almost four. It seems like the perfect age gap. My plan now is a new pup every four years. This should ensure I always have a nice pack around me.
I'm so sorry for the losses of your mom and beloved dogs.

I'm sorry for your losses Robert. It's a lot to take, in a short space of time. You kept yourself amazingly composed in the video, and that's all credit to you. Little guy knew you were struggling and was doing his best there. He clearly thinks the world of you. Bailey, my Malinois, is the best help dog and best friend I could have wished for, he has been through a lot with his health too. He was there with me when my lovely gentle old Chocolate Labrador, called Thornton, passed away. Without Bailey there, I just don't think I would have got through it the same. It was really hard. Thornton had got me through a lot of difficult times. Bailey does the same. He will be 10 next year, I just wish he was 1 year old again.
    Thoughts and best wishes. T🐾

My heartfelt condolences to you and yours over losing your dogs so close together. That truly does suck. Great advice to have a couple/few years between dog ages. I lost my 15.5 year old Belgian Sheepdog female in Oct of '23. She was doing quite well until she wasn't. Found out she had hemangiosarcoma. She had refused to eat for three days. Had her eased out of here the day I found out. Not even six months later, I lost her daughter who was 11.5. She had gastric cancer. She was never correctly diagnosed by my usual vet. I am still dealing and reeling from her loss. I initially said, no more dogs. That lasted about 2 weeks. I could not stand to be without a dog. My current Belgian is 11 months old, she might outlive me so I will take steps to make sure she has a soft place to land if so.

My assistant dog trainer got all of her dogs and cats the same age then years later lost them all in the same year - she said it was the worst year of her life and would never do that to herself again. My last dog that passed had never been an only dog before. Thought we were going to lose him from a broken heart when we had to put the dog that had a stroke down. So got a six month old pup who was free to a good home. Listed as a Shepherd/Lab/Pit mix. (Really a Beagle/JRT mix). Still took like 3 months to find a good fit. The pup had the energy of 5 dogs - so no one had a chance to get depressed including Bounder, our middle aged dog at that time. We still have that high energy dog - who would be in her 5th home if it wasn't for us.

Been there, done that. I had 3 golden retrievers, all the same age, heart break hell during their last year , and my own age being 65 yrs old made caring for them , keeping them clean & comfortable a hardship . Then the loss,,,,,,devastating. I wanted to join them after my last survivor “Ellie” crossed over. It took awhile but I then adopted a 5yr old German Shepherd, a breed I’d always admired but never lived with. Alina was her name & we were together 6 yrs before she crossed over this past August, her end months were difficult , she was my best friend, we traveled from RI to California in my car & back , I wasn’t afraid at all as Alina had me covered at all times. I wasn’t going to get another dog, but my son, in his wisdom after observing me & my lifestyle change started working on me to get another dog. I was offered a 5yr old German Shepard from a breeder I know but my heart would not allow another Shepard as it felt wrong, Alina couldn’t be replaced. My son located a breeder that had “mini golden doodles” and insisted we take a look. I reluctantly agreed, I was accustomed to large dogs & this felt weird. But I’m aging & I really can’t control large dogs anymore. I found a sweet “red” golden doodle & her name is “Scarlet “ she was 5 months when we met & she’s been part of the family now for 6 weeks. My heart is still heavy with grief from losing Alina but Scarlet keeps me active, smiling & I get lots of love from this little one. And no shedding,,,, big bonus after having Golden Retriever & German shepherd family members.

Robert, sorry to hear about your losses. Just want to say thank you to you and your dogs - I learned so much from you and them, especially Goofy and Maya, who served as inspiration for us with our first Mal mix Tucker, whom we had for almost 14 years, and our second Malinois Mattie, who we lost to bone cancer at age 6 earlier this year… You and Goofy especially were models to which we aspired - trying to learn from you how to be a good dog trainer (and good dog parent) so that our dogs.would someday be as good and capable as Goofy. It’s been so hard coping with.the loss of Mattie especially (as she was taken so early from us,) that I’m not sure when (or even if) we’ll be ready for another dog. I look forward to watching more Robert Cabral videos, not only to learn more about dog training, but as I follow the progress with your new dog, perhaps it will inspire me to take that step and get another dog myself someday. So, condolences, thanks - and congratulations at the same time!

Robert & Janet, I am truly sorry for your four losses, I didn't know Goofy has passed on, loved watching your interactions, he was a remarkable dog. I lost my Mia April 2022, Zeus Feb 2023 and then my 16 yr old cat Solo in July 2023. 15 month period was hard enough esp with Zeus because his lymphoma cancer was so sudden and unexpected, he died 2 months later and it turned my world completely upside down. He too was remarkable, I still have not removed him from the microchip database after 18 mths, serving as a reminder of his existence I yet still not ready to let him go. My heart breaks for each loss, If it happened within 5 mths, I would have had a complete meltdown. The love we shared will always live on within our own hearts.

It is toughest to know when to make that call or when to add another but I would say the one caveat when it comes to age is breed. Smaller and mixed breeds tend to live longer with fewer issues. The youngest of four that we had will be 19 in February. He is 10 pounds and a mix of four breeds. We just adopted a one and a half year old and he is a larger breed, also a mix and aside from allergies, has no issues. Both found us and we just agreed with them that we should rescue them. We had been debating this very issue. Big guy has the right temperament to be around our little guy and understand his needs. Sometimes the universe has a way of answering your questions.

And sometimes even the planning doesn't work. We lost a 10 yr old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel at 10 years of age, and our Australian Shepherd at 14 1/2 years with 2 weeks of each other. I also had that age difference so like you I wouldn't have to suffer the loss of both at the same time, but it sort of happened that way anyway. Its tough...they give us the best of times, and when they go the saddest of times. I have always been a pure breed dog person, but after those 2 went decided to give back and went for a rescue dog...So he is 1/2 Pit and Chihuahua mix with some other breeds tossed in...he came from a hoarding situation. Ok, 2 breeds that I said I had no desire to have. We have had him almost 2 years now...he was 4 months when we got him. He is not a barker...great on a leash...does not bark at other dogs, good with kids...ect. He is a nice size at 25 lbs. Told him I don't know how we came home with him...I love dogs with long fur...guess I love all of that grooming..:) Been debating if to add a second dog or not...I'm not working full-time anymore, when I was we always had 2 dogs. I do miss having 2, but also trying to think of financial wise...having animals is getting more expensive...and I also have some birds. But I'm also getting older and trying to be a responsible pet owner. As an animal lover that can be hard to do as sometimes we think with our hearts more than with our brains. I have been blessed to have had many wonderful dogs, birds, rabbits and even fish over the years. The losses are hard...but the blessings are something I am glad I did not miss. Thanks for all you do!

My heartfelt condolences. I lost three great dogs within a two year span, all in that 12-14 year age group, culminating in the pandemic years. My current pack are also amazing, loving dogs. I appreciate what you're saying. With the utmost respect, I'm going to disagree slightly on two points. First, the timeline you describe assumes the dogs age linearly, which is often not the case. Dogs can develop serious conditions at any age. Second, I think it totally depends on the dogs, their personalities, their individual needs, etc. My 5 year old plays with the 1 year old way more than the middle dog, age 3-ish. If the right 3 month old came along, I'd adopt her/him so it could grow with the 1 year old and they could play to their hearts' content. If the addition benefits the family, that's all that ever matters. I wouldn't deprive the 1 year old of a younger buddy just because of a number. But I totally agree about the littermates problem. My youngest dog has had a year of solid training. If the right puppy comes along, she'll look to him for guidance. Watching new dogs learn from the established dogs is one of the most rewarding things to witness.

Just lost my older dog, he made it to 17. Got his ashes back two days ago so I've been a bit of a mess, so glad I have my younger dog to help me through it.

I had a similar thing with my cats, one after the other we lost and it was heartbreaking. My husky is almost 9 and my malinois is 15 months

Thank you🙏🏻 I can use this advise regarding my cats. I lost my beloved and soul mate this year. I have another senior left and She got depressed because She lost her best friend. So I got anothe kitten and now there is better energy in the house. I have to think of getting another in a year so my young kitten/youngster now 7 monts will not be alone like my senior was. The cat that i lost was like my blind dog. She followed me everywhere I went. She wanted to even shower with my, She would paw the glass and wanted to come in the shower. God I miss her so much. 😻💔❤️

I had to let my two senior horses go and three elderly cats in five weeks. It was awful. It’s hard having animals that age at the same time.

Robert, God bless you for loving your dogs. I can see the pain you are still in. Your new dog is totally attentive to you and understands your greiving process. Thank you for all your videos, you have helped me gain so much knowledge training my dog.

It never gets any easier does it, we just had to have our little Holly put down, she was nearly seventeen years old. She had a very good life. Towards the end her health conditions were starting to get the better of her. We all miss her terribly. Our other dogs are a great comfort. They truly are amazing creatures. Please check out Dr Andrew Jones and Dr Karen Becker on this channel. God bless you all.

Oh Gosh Robert, losing 3 dogs & your mom in the span of 6 month. Sending love & prayers to you & wife as you go through this grieving process. Much respect to you as you share with us and give us important info. It took almost 3 yrs before I was ready to get another dog.
How long did you wait between the last dog passed & you got the new puppy?

How about have 1 dog? Put all your efforts into one dog. I'm thankful that I only had one dog and never got him a friend . I was able to focus all of my energy on him, his entire life. He lived until he was 17 years old. In his final months, he had my utmost care, love, and attention.
