Kids today won't understand- Alan Hansen was the godfather of modern punditry, he was seen as the authority on football analysis and there was nothing like him except him for about 2 decades since the 90s. Even if he came back now when so many others are trying to be like him, he'd still be the alpha.
Better days. MOTD is sadly dying now, highlights and games are shown constantly where ever you look these days. Always great growing up though with Lineker and Hansen.

Legend I remember me and my dad was in a coffee shop in London and we walked out of the shop and my dad dropped his wallet and he picked it up n chased us down the road I didnt know who he was because I was only 7 or 8 and my dad started speaking to him and they took a photo and then later that night my dad told me to come look on the telly and he was presenting match of the day and told me we met a famous person 😂🤣

Although he played for Liverpool (Everton fan) you listened to him as he knew his business and was one of, if not the best, central defender in Europe in his prime. Didn't want to follow Dalglish & Souness into the manager's job or into coaching, although I think he'd have done well. Even for a red, I liked him, spoke sense and knew the game.

it's interesting because he retired on my 21st Birthday, 11th May 2014. Even though I don't support Liverpool, Hansen is a club legend and one of the best pundits to have worked in Football analysis

The best pundit on match of the day, full stop. His analysis was always spot on, and ridiculously insightful. I feel for him and his family at this current time 😢
Why? He retired willingly, he wasn't sacked or forced out. A petition would only be needed if he wanted to come back and the BBC were stopping him. MOTD is dead. There's literally no need for it anymore. Both Sky and BT upload highlights shortly after matches finish and this show comes on far too late to bother anymore. Plus you don't have to wait for your favourite team's highlights. I don't miss it at all. RUclips option is so much better and you can watch them back as many times as you like.
I am half English and half Welsh. We do.not have a lot of time for the Scots. They in return, do not have much time for us. Hanson's analyses were always on point. Brutal but honest. He told it how it was. No.mercy. Alan was also a great defender for Liverpool. Not that I like Liverpool but the bloke told it EXACTLY how and why it was. Not like.bloody woke Lineker.
I think there was something ‘ iffy ‘ about the way he retired and the way he was treated . I am not sure that he particularly wanted to go , not in that manner and so suddenly anyhow . I don’t trust the BBC at all . Their track record in these matters is awful . Maybe he upset someone there by being brutally honest about something and they took offence and decided to punish him , I don’t know . But something was dodgy and not right about his sudden departure . He was their best pundit ever and extremely knowledgeable about the game . The program misses him and has gone down hill ‘ drastically ‘ since he left . There are now so many faults and issues with the show that sometimes I just can’t bear to watch it . They have ‘ Ruined ‘ the format over the years and messed about with things so much that it is almost unrecognisable from what it used to be . There used to be great ‘ fluidity ‘ in the highlights coverage of the games so that each match ‘ seamlessly ‘ started and ended so that it appeared that you had seen the entire game . Each match showed the kick off in both half’s and every time a goalkeeper saved and conceded a corner , the corner kick was shown and each time a player was fouled the resulting free kick was shown , plus each time a shot etc went wide , the resulting goal kick was shown , etc , etc . Nowadays there is no effort whatsoever to carefully edit the footage so that it appears that the game is ‘ flowing ‘ naturally . How I miss the old Match of the Day . I Hate it now when you see a team press forward , get to the edge of the penalty area , have one of their players hacked down in a dangerous position and then the next second it cuts to the other team going forward at the other end . You don’t see what results from the first teams free kick . It shouldn’t matter if nothing comes from it and they mess it up . It should still be shown , It is all part of the game that adds to the enjoyment and excitement . They should cut out some of the endless , needless talk at the end of the game so that they can piece together the highlights and lows a bit better . Nowadays as many people are saying , the highlights they show are no different to what you can view on your phone or tablet . All bitty and badly pieced together . I like Lineker a lot but even he annoys me by the way he constantly gives clues away as to what is going to happen in the game . I am not sure he realises he is doing it but time and time again I can tell the outcome of a game by the subtle remarks and innuendos he makes at the start. Don’t they realise that many , many people purposefully tune in to watch the games because they haven’t heard the results yet . It is a real spoiler to give away strong clues at the beginning of many of the games . They never used to do that . I think overall though that Lineker is a good presenter and I think Shearer and Ian Wright are superb too but boy , the show does miss Alan Hansen .

Pure nostalgia. Hansen was a dull pundit and the 30-min highlights for the main match even if it was a 0-0 is nowhere near as good as today's format.
