Baseball's Forgotten Superstar

- Rafael Palmeiro had a long, consistent career that should have made him a first-ballot Hall of Famer. From his college days at Mississippi State to the 500 home runs and 3,000 hits he recorded on the Cubs, Rangers, and Orioles. But in 2005, Palmeiro would testify in front of Congress with steroid allegations from Jose Canseco, and a few months later, he would fail a steroid test. Palmeiro would be booed by his own fans and retired in shame as he got just 12% of the hall of fame vote capping of one of the fastest falls in sports history.

He's not forgotten by anyone that grew up in that era. He's just disgraced.
Came here to say that. I dont even have to watch the video.
Same. Everyone remembers him pointing his finger. Honestly I bet he wants to be forgotten but he most definitely isn't.
Was going to say the same thing!!
Period!
Guy lied to Congress in Congress under oath with great conviction.
Good for you Palmeiro. Roids was not a topic Congress should have hearings about.
No ones forgotten about Palmeiro. We all remember him clearly waving his finger at Congress saying he didn't do juice. Yea we totally remember him
Eddie Murray also hit 500 HR's & 3,000 hits. Stud
And he is the all time leader in sacrifice flies.
That finger wag will never go away!
PERIOD! 😂
"I. Did Not. Do. Steroids." We remember...
I don’t want you to know I do Steroids
Sounds about as believable as Bill clinton, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman!"
He had talent without PEDS..to bad he embarrassed himself with his lies
Actually his carear can be divided in two. Before PED and After PED. Look it up.
“Let our juiced up guy play your juiced up guy and really see who’s the best”
-Bill Burr
And I agree if you’re at your peak there’s no excuses now and you are using every advantage possible.
He's not forgotten. He's ignored. It's the consequence of cheating and then lying about cheating and then being caught in the lie.
Everyone was doing ped during that time. They shouldn't hold that against them, but when you go in front of the panel and lie, then come up dirty. It's not a good look. That's his downfall
no, not everyone was using PEDs.
@@venalleader2909 your right not everyone, but a good percentage was
@@henrygalusha138880%? Same for pitchers?
@@ron88303 pretty close
@@henrygalusha1388 I’m wondering if anyone has done a study to see how PEDs manifested itself, both through body changes and stats overall. One would thing abrupt changes in either would suggest a player might be using. Further, if both pitchers and batters were using, wouldn’t the stat effects cancel each other out?
Not forgotten: Ignored.
Shunned
Not forgotten. Just dont give a fuck. Stay gone.
I have mixed feelings about PEDs. From owners and execs down, everyone knew, and they allowed it, as long as cash was abundant. It wasn’t until it became a scandal that the players were ostracized. Players in the 60s and 70s were hopped up on all kinds of uppers and stimulants. 162 games per year is grueling.
Yup. Since no one was enforcing anything, it basically became a situation where if you weren't using, you weren't trying. Sure, I feel bad for non users who suffered, but they probably should have focused on the lack of representation by their union rather than blaming their teammates.
🎯
True, people generally have a hypocritical stance on this depending on the team the players play for. It's still cheating but at the same time sometimes I wonder if legalizing PEDs would have been the lesser evil.
Bud Selig ignored it when it benefited the sport as a whole. He is in the hall of fame.
I have no problem with peds, it’s sad that it ruined a lot of players legacy’s, especially when no one cared for so long during that era. Plus people mostly focus on hitters on peds, don’t forget that most pitchers were on peds too
Yep. One of the most flagrant cases of benefitting from steroids. Went from being a singles hitter with occasional power to a HR machine, instantly. No HOF ever.
That finger wag is his forever Scarlet Letter. We remember.
I DID NOT EAT AN ENTIRE PIZZA PIE WHILE WATCHING THIS!
Nice name
I just ate a whole cheesecake. Now I wish I didn't tho.
@@HonestDepression101 Hey! Don't beat yourself up - at least you were honest, and America appreciates that 😆
Period!
@@mannyg1750 --- Big Mac: Let me be frank - I'm not here to talk about the past.
Congress: Well, sir, then why exactly are you here? ---
LOL. Whole thing is much funnier in retrospect.
Don’t you point that goddamn finger at me, Rafael.
Palmeiro really began accumulating big-time stats during his age 30 season (hmmm steroids???). He was always above average but never led the league in like anything except hits once. His rate stats were good but not phenomenal. The only reason he accumulated is because he stayed healthy and took PEDs.
yep. i dont get why avg players who played 20 seasons get into the HoF.....
its supposed to be best of the bests?
being avg for 20 years doesnt make u great lol. just an avg player for ........ 20 years lol.
HoF commitee is a joke. i lost any and all respect for MLB and most any other major sport.
if Mlb cared about integrity of the game. coaches, players drs would of all been banned from the league.. even in todays game with the bs. like the Houston Astros..
than entire team and coaching staff all should of been banned for life.
anyone who watches the shit they put on air now is just as guilty. doing nothing is the same as condoning the cheating..
@FastDuDeJiunn Tbf stats compiling is a part of what makes a HOF career, it's not necessarily a bad thing if the said player is good. How good is a different story and that is where the arguments would be had.
He led the league in singles early in his career. No doubt he was using.
Yep. That's why Barry went from a possible top 20 all time player, to the greatest ever in his late 30s. Folks are idiots saying PEDs aren't a big factor in stats.
@@sethtate2079 In addition just look at how the guy was in even 2000 to few years later, that was a drastic change. The guy looked like two different people.
Over the years I do wonder about Rafael Palmeiro's excuse about a tainted Vitamin B12 shot contributing to his failed steroid test. Even if he was a regular steroid user during his career, I don't think he'd be stupid enough to use it in a year where he'd all but cement his candidacy for Hall of Fame, especially during a year when regular steroid testing and punishment were initiated. The 10-day suspension is a slap to the wrist compared to what players get nowadays, but he's done more than enough damage to his legacy as the first superstar to test positive.
And he was never what you'd call jacked.
I still remember how in 2003, when Palmeiro was with the Rangers in his second stint, and he was gonna be a free agent after the 2003 season, Palmeiro decided to NOT waive his no-trade-clause to get traded to the Cubs in late July 2003 (the team he started his career for).
He decided to play meaningless games for the 2003 Rangers, that were rebuilding by the Summer and were not gonna re-sign Palmeiro or any veterans, instead of playing meaningful games for the 2003 Cubs.
Cry about it
While i have mixed feeling on everyone that did it. I also dont think they are to take full blame either. These players were scapegoats for the bigger monster. THE MLB!!!! They all knew and im sure was behind the whole scandal. Remember this unfolded after the 94 strike that pissed off fans and canceled the World Series for first time in recent memory. Baseball needed to bring fans back and im sure this was part of it.
Big Mac was a home run guy before he turned into the Brawny paper towel mascot. Not to the extent that he turned into but a great basher nonetheless.
The more I learn about Palmeiro, the worse he looks. Imagine calling Will Clark a lowlife. The Rangers offered Clark a contract that was best for him. What professional baseball player is gonna hold that against him? Palmeiro apparently.
Ok…but Will Clark was a low-life and racist
Palmeiro was one of my favorites. A pure, natural hitter. He didn't need to juice up. A great hitters legacy forever tarnished.
He didn't need to juice up. But he did
Honestly who gets paid more, home run hitter or singles hitter? There's a motive.
He cheated against all baseball players of the past, of his own fellow players , against every fan of baseball, his numbers and record are completly fake, he deserve to be forgotten, his records are from juice ....a disgrace and deserves to be forgotten
ruclips.net/video/tOs-CENh4ZE/видео.htmlsi=F1-ElAQIr4mtSZG6
No, he's not forgotten at all. He's just remembered for wagging his finger at Congress and telling them sternly that he did NOT use steroids (only to test positive a short while later).
What a chump.
Without the "Viagra" the guy would have been more in line with Mark Grace.
HEY. I will hear no slander on Gracie!
Exactly right. Palmiero led the league in singles at one point early on.
@@saulspeaks2557 Didn’t Grace go to prison!
He was overshadowed by a lot of guys even when he was still playing. Great hitter, PEDs or not, but he was never really the guy who put butts in the seats. Solid, steady, consistent, and reliable production, whose peaks weren't super high, but never really had many lows.
Partway through, I was like "As he hit 5 runs, as he ran backwards, as he talked to his gf, as he started so many sentences with "as he"'
“ I did not do steroids “
He also lies very well
Y tu que tomas, cocs cola noveuh.
My issue with Raffy is the lie and fingerpoint. Honestly most fans would have forgiven those guys had they just had the stones to say yup I did it, I messed up. Only one I can think of that did that was Giambi.
don't forget Canseco. He's the one who started the downfall of all of the cheats.
@@venalleader2909 personally I don't care. Let then all use gear. What I don't like is when people lie about it.
Ken Caminiti admitted he juiced during his MVP season.
Not at all forgotten. But people stop caring about drug addicts at some point. Only one still standing is Bonds because people refuse to let go to their childhood memories but he is the only one not even Arod survived being such a bad example and taking so much drugs during his career
The most underrated hitter of his generation. If Palmeiro had played on a winning east-coast or west-coast team, rather than Texas and Baltimore, he would be as revered as Clemens, McGwire, Ortiz and the other PED users that now wait for a call from Cooperstown that is not coming.
He's not forgotten and was never a superstar. He was basically Harold Baines on steroids.
We didn't forget when he pointed the finger😂😂
He wasn't forgotten so much as relegated...for obvious reasons
Even with ped it still takes talent!
It's great that you mention the most important thing: he drew a walk in his first all-star game. 😆
I think a player who is somewhat forgotten, even though he’s in the HOF, is Jim Thome. Great slugger!
I did not take steroids.... One week later test positive for steroids.
Are you seriously suggesting that he did not do steroids before 2004? Is that really what you’re going with? He was five years in and 26 years old and had a career of 48 home runs then suddenly he plays a year with Jose Canseco and goes from a career number of 48 to 26 and then into the 30s and 40s?? Come on dude Silliness. And everybody knows that Pudge and Ricky Henderson also used steroids, but their numbers were so obviously affected by steroids. Stealing bases and being an all-time great catcher isn’t something we automatically assume is from steroids. There is not a worse example of steroid use than Rafhael Palmero.
I absolutely loved Palmeiro's swing. It is sweet. I am disappointed that his stats were hugely aided by the use of 'roid just like Sosa, Mac, Bonds, Boone, etc.
If we remove the PED’s and treat it as it was all legit, he’d be in the hall. But I’d always feel weird about it. He was really good, for really long, but never did I look at Rafael Palmeiro and go “he’s a top 15 player in the sport right now”.
Rafael Palmeirods!!!!😮
Juan Pierre Raffy and Tony Gwynn are my favorite players all time
It almost doesn't matter at this point, since fans are going to believe what they want to believe. However, having covered MLB in the 70s 80s and 90s in Baltimore, I can say without hesitation that no one on that beat in those days had a shred of medical training. We surely knew what hydrocortisone cream was for use on itchy spots, but actual anabolic steroids? Where were we supposed to learn about that? Media was never allowed in the trainer's room, or in the shower/bathroom area. So, to claim that EVERYONE knew about it is patent nonsense. Yet, callers to sports talk radio shows continually pointed their fingers at media claiming we were complicit. Ridiculous.
Good video Thanks brother
The hypocrisy of Major League Baseball. Maguire and Sosa generated enthusiasm for the game on a world-wide scale, and MLB harvested billions. Once BARRY BONDS saw these mediocre players enjoy the adulation of excited fans, his pride in his own exemplary achievements provoked him to make a statement. And that he did. HOF based on his career statistics, before his ped use.
Someone should look into the 1979 California Angels. A team full of decent, okay and so so batters. But in ‘79, they all became sluggers having the best stats of their careers. The Angels lost to the Orioles in the playoffs. The following season, they stunk for various reasons. Always thought something was fishy about that season.
Palmeiro is not forgotten. We remember him wagging his finger then testing positive for steroids. What he did on the field is irrelevant because he cheated to get those stats.
It will never be forgotten that Palmeiro used PEDs and disgraced the game. So HOF? Hell no!
Angrily denying to Congress that you've used steroids and then testing positive for them will do that.
Palmeiro likely used them to extend his career and help him recover from minor injuries--a common practice for guys nearing the ends of their careers.
I'm in favor of admitting the roiders to the HoF, but I'd like their records to be removed from all-time lists. Of course, the opposite is true.
Only FORGOTTEN to you.
Raffy was a great pull hitter he took advantage of short porches in Texas and Baltimore and yes Ped’s helped him he was average for Chicago when he came up. Will no thrill Clark was overrated I met him once he was a real jerk to me in front of my girlfriend as well. 2 Mississippi BUMS I hope never make the HOF.⚾️
"I did not have sex with that woman."
- Bill Clinton, 1998
"I have never used steroids. Period."
- Rafael Palmeiro, 2004
Famous last words.
People calling him Rafael Palmeiroid was one of the funnier steroid era nicknames. If MLB decides to let any of these guys in the Hall of Fame, they should let all of the steroid guys in….or let none of them in. Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, ARod, Sosa, etc…
HOW to WIN a Gold Glove by playing just TWENTY-EIGHT games!!!
I remember when he wagged his finger to Congress and said, "I did not have relations with that steroid"
Cheater and lying to Congress about it... yea he wasn't forgotten. Just disgraced and disowned by baseball fans.
The numbers he put up season after season confirms him as a hall of famer
like saying a kid caught cheating on exams deserves a scholarship because of his test scores
one thing people never seem to think about is taxes... Baltimore is high income tax state lol
where texas not sure in 90s but i know now its no income tax lol...
stuff to consider especially earning 10s of millions
HE made it clear that he Did not Use Steroids, it was HGH!
I watched this video, but with my eyes closed
Palmeiro's downfall was not The Steroids, or that finger of his. It was because Sandberg's wife was not the only one he cheat it with. Managers, Teammates, and Sport writers all hated the guy.
it's the whole denial and pointing the finger to only be exposed that ruined him
I've always liked him
Family friend of ours is his agent Fernando Kuza
At his press conference about the PEDS you can see him standing behind. I have mixed feelings about him getting into the hall
It's like where these things legal illegal or they just ignore them
yep.... imo he should be HoF. roids or not doesnt matter.
i saythat even though imo anyone that roids should be banned for life.....
that said i still say he belongs HoF... why?
Because as u stated. at the time MLB was quitly and knowingly allowing it to happen. so why are we putting all the blame on the players?
just like the owners. they did what they had to to get the money flowing........ imo the owners, and players alike should be banned from the league.
billionairs allways get away with shit. using the runts to get rich off of.
honestly america be better offwithout pro sports.
Like Jim Thome, Palmeria quitely achieved their milestones
Orioles legend
The stats were great tho 400 hr 1200 rbi in 10 years
good voice over
Not tomorrow Not next week. Not one Penny.
Perfect example of how roids can turn a kind of mid-tier player into a good player. People like McGwire and Bonds get more hate because they were already good, and became amazing after. Their roided accomplishments stood out because they were breaking the game. Especially Bonds’ hilariously good video game numbers lol
Roids no hall for him!! Case closed
He's not forgotten, he just won't get invited to the Cooperstown Country club. If you don't care about the Hall of Fame, which no person who understands the voters and their qualifications would, its all irrelevant. Lots of great players aren't going to be inducted and I don't care at all
I get you're trying to click bait the audience but understand that he's not forgotten because of people not knowing his ability. It's what he did to ruin his reputation that makes many choose to forget him.
…and 120 steroid injections.
We did not forget him. We ignore him ... 🤣
Now if he played in NY things would be different
I guess you know someone is lying when they point their finger.
Long live the 2005 Orioles
Growing the size of their heads without head growing exercises..... lmfao
His sin was that he denied using PED. He lied. He should've admitted what he did and apologized. Maybe he might have been forgiven and in the HOF.
I have no use for cheaters. Flush him.
Remember his Viagra commercials 😂
Black Beauties were uppers in the 50's & 60's. No one held out of HOF.
Those don't facilitate adding muscle mass and strength. Nice try.
Bat speed will always be an advantage. Read Ball Four.
Darryl Strawberry talked about greenies in "Doc and Darryl". Those things seem like cheat codes
Clinton did the finger wag too. It's kind of a tell.
Nah. We remember Palmeiro loving the steroids
A real "forgotten" superstar was Juan Gonzalez. In 1998, he had 100+ RBI and was well on his way to the record. Just tapered off in the second half unfortunately.
If you were an actual baseball fan Eddie Murray did not "sneak up" on you.
All those who took PEDs tarnished their own years of playing. Bonds, Palmero, Conseco, Macguire, Clemens, Sosa, HoF or no it takes aeay from those who did it right.
Nobody "forgot" who he was. Lol. Every baseball fan worth their weight in salt knows what this guys numbers were.
You're a liar, period. Eye,hand correlation is not affected if you're a good hitter fine but when you go fron hitting 12 to 15 home runs a year to 35 to 40. How do you explain that? Mike Piazza was as gulity as anyone yet he's in the hof and virtually unscathed, why?
Piazza's first complete season he hit 35. He was consistently hitting over 20, sometimes 30 plus throughout his career. He may have used steroids, but, unlike Raffy, there wasn't a sudden, absurd jump in power. Thus, there isn't the suspicion that attaches to that. Here endeth the lesson.
@@Mst-bh9ti he was drafted as a favor! for Tommy Lasorda in something like the 200th pick, he left the Dodgers bad-mouthing even the great Vin Scully, shows you lack of character and class, he wasn't even considered a prospect, he was a skinny, slow with no skills other then catcher. You belive what you want, but Givin all that, the era he played, he ballooned up 240 lbs. All muscle. I have eyes along with common sense, Palmeiro is a pompous prick, Piazza is just an ass-hole.
As a child of 90’s baseball get RP and all the Roid Heads in the HOF - they made the MLB billions.
He is not, the men had one of the best swim, we can’t forget his home runs, doubles and over 3000 hits
One day if Bonds Sosa and the rest get in so will Palmeiro
See they didn’t want a contact hitter so he made a decision
Compiler and juiced
Theres no way he didnt start juicing until he got caught
I could understand if marginal players used it to stay in the League but why did good and great players do it?
The HOF is not that clean some of the players have stories but they are there
Who? I'd just like to know.
Want to see the difference on and off 'roids? Check the stats of Ryan Braun before and after he got busted. Also check the stats of Fernando Tatis before and after.
tatis didn’t take roids in his career lol, he took “ roids” when he was taking some medicine to treat some type or rash. He’s literally playing well this year too before he got hurt.
