  • Exegetical Analysis of the Quran | Surat al-Baqarah | Verses 1 - 5. Welcome to our exegetical analysis on the chapters of the Quran by the Quran, starting with Chapter 2, Surat al-Baqarah. Surat al-Baqarah, the chapter of the cow, named after the incident of the cow mentioned therein, is the longest chapter in the Quran, consisting of 286 verses. It covers a wide range of topics, including guidance for humanity, the stories of previous prophets, laws and regulations for personal and societal conduct, and the importance of faith and service. Verses 1 to 29 emphasize the importance of true fidelity to the one God, the unseen, and the significance of suitable actions, here in particular commemoration of the divine through regular communion with God, divine revelation, charitable acts, and faithfulness. Verses 30 to 39 cover the story of Adam and the fall of Man, as well as his subsequent journey on earth. Verses 40 to 103 cover numerous references to the history of the Children of Israel, their trials, tribulations, and the blessings bestowed upon them, as well as their reaction to the revelation of the Quran. It is in these verses wherein the incident of the cow is also narrated. Verses 104 to 141 cover some of the previous topics pertaining to the children of Israel, however with emphasis on those whom the Quran terms: the people of the book, referring to those who adhere to the biblical tradition, such as the Jews and Christians. Similarly, they cover references to many of the well-known figures from the biblical tradition, here in particular Abraham and his contributions to the legacy of God’s message; as well as his descendants. Verses 141 to 171 cover the community of the prophet Muhammad and their reaction to the message of the Quran, as well as some of the ritualistic practices and ceremonies within the Deen, such as the appointment of the Qibla for the followers of the Messenger; the Sacred Sanctuary; and the inviolability of its surroundings. Verses 172 to 242 cover laws and regulations that deal with guidelines on various aspects of life including communion worship, fasting, dietary laws, warfare, marriage, divorce, death, and inheritance. Verses 243 to 260 cover the various narratives of different prophets that were sent to previous communities. Verses 260 to 286 deal with topics pertaining to charity, financial transactions, consumption of usury, and debts. Furthermore, they emphasize the divine nature of the Quran as a guidance for humanity, and they encourage those who are true in their fidelity to God to reflect on its verses. Overall, the chapter serves as a comprehensive guide for the faithful, providing them a moral, ethical, and spiritual guidance for leading a righteous life in accordance with the principles of God.
