I think the biggest factor to the difficulty of a course is the teacher you end up having. All of the AP’s listed in “drop out” were ones I took but was fortunate to have very good teachers for. The material isn’t easy per-say, but a good teacher will make it feel very doable!

That’s 100% true. People generally see APUSH as pretty hard but it was one of my easiest classes last year. Pretty much got all the info I needed in class and had barely any homework. Teacher made it ridiculously easy to do well on dbqs because he had a ridiculously formulaic approach to them. Like you knew the entire structure, sentence by sentence, before getting the prompt.

My current AP Calc AB teacher, according to my entire class (myself included,) doesn't explain the concepts any well. He also makes a LOT of mistakes despite having the answer sheet with him... but this isn't particularly what makes me upset. It's that whenever we ask anything about the steps or what did he did, we get hit with the "You learned this before so I won't explain."

As a lit student I’m feeling this hard with exam day approaching. I was expecting the class to be like 40% nonfiction and 60% fiction and mostly based around how to dissect and construct stories along with general improvements on your ability to write. Instead it’s mostly been some short stories with a lot of poems mixed in, almost all of which have been fiction, the only one which wasn’t being a poem I was allowed to choose for an essay. Don’t get me wrong, I like reading and I got a 5 on the language exam but the shear volume of anachronistic stories and specifically poems is ridiculous. The poems specifically tend to be very subjective in their meaning and tone and it can often lead to really conflicting opinions on a text, and if your option doesn’t align with a test maker’s you’re screwed.
The best example of this I can think of is the poem I chose for one of my essays, “the Foggy Dew”, by Charles O’Neill. “The Foggy Dew” can and has been interpreted to have two VERY different meanings over its one hundred year existence, as either an incredibly solemn poem focusing on the loss of a failed rebellion, or as a hyped up nationalist call to arms to rebel against colonial rule. Both interpretations are correct but only one can effectively be put on a testing sheet and so if you choose one your wrong on the other. I’ve seen this for plenty of poems in the class thus far and I honestly view it as somewhat stupid especially since many of these poems are from a time before we had standardized writing and so the older forms of English and writing needlessly complicate things on top of the already difficult material. I spoke to one of my former AP teachers, who also happens to teach 12th grade English, and she wasn’t surprised at the volume of older works but openly voiced he discontent at it alongside mine. It’s not a good way to get kids interested in the subject and it actively turns them away and I can say from personal experience that I haven’t gained much as a writer from this class that I didn’t already learn through independent reading or through AP English language which did a much better job at what AP Lit fails to do. The class is far to archaic and that makes it needlessly difficult in what should be a relatively easy subject. Kids wouldn’t have a problem taking an AP course like this if they could analyze modern rap songs, movies, and TV shows. Writing has evolved since the days of Shakespeare and we don’t need to rely on stage plays and poems to teach kids when they’re already 400 years ahead of it.

I also had a somewhat tough AP English Language and Composition teacher in 12th grade. For starters, I had to read 25 to 30 pages at home on average a day (which took me 30 to 35 minutes a day[I try to read carefully]). In addition, I had to doing reading plus reading comprehension, writing or vocabulary homework (some of the esoteric 12th grade vocabulary words I learned in that class were: deleterious, esurient, surreptitious, colloquial, conflagration, sybarite, venerable, idiosyncrasy, panacea, penurious, etc.). In other words, I spent nearly an hour on AP Language and Composition class at home nearly everyday. Furthermore, for essays, he was strict on formatting (usually he wanted either MLA or APA or Chicago formatting), page count (first essay was 4-5 pages and the final essay/research paper was 7-8 pages), sources for research papers (he does not want us to use Wikipedia or any source similar to Wikipedia or use any kind of corporate news media as sources), and submission time (if you were late to class and handed your essay to the teacher, he is going to mark 10 percentage points off your essay and this was the first offense). Second offense, he will not accept the essay and you get a zero. Third offense, and you fail the class. Plus, for 4-6 page essays, he gave us 2-3 days to write. For 7-8 page essays, he gave us 4-5 days to write. I learned a lot from my English Language and Composition teacher's class and it did prepare me for college.

Also, at my high school and if you were in 12th grade for English you had three options for English: 1. the regular 12th grade English. 2. AP Language and Composition which I went with (11th graders can also take that class too). 3. AP Literature and Composition which was the hardest option (I would not recommend this option unless if you really are good at English and enjoy English. Also, the English Department strongly recommended students pass AP Language and Composition before taking this class.) (Which is a way of saying most people can’t really hear stuff they think of and then get that out into physical space) I took it senior year and got a 5 but only because I took college theory and jazz harmony at the same time and even before. That’s kinda the hard part, the average high school musician regardless of skill on their instrument will still probably fail The majority of non-musicians will fail. It’s an incredibly unfair course but it’s a great class for those who want to go into music as a major and have a better than most grasp.

Hell even some of the people who failed his class went onto do better later. He said I want you all to focus on learning more than a grade. Albeit he had a policy of in the preAP chem class if you got below a 80% then he wanted a conference with your parents. He did that on every exam. A lot hated that of course cause it’s embarrassing, but he really wanted to help us. You need to be able to memorize them and apply them as you see fit. The exam consists of general questions, music-writings, audio excerpts which you have to answer questions based on, like what kinds of procedures were used and whatnot, and there is even a "sight-singing" section where you are given a sheet of written music and you have to sing it right then and there, without an instrument. I only took one AP class, and it was AP music theory. One thing that we had to do was to learn all the different intervals (ascending and descending) by ear, and we were tested on it. So, they’d play two notes, one after the other, and you’d have to know what the gap was between the two notes. I would spend so much time in the computer lap using the Aurelia program (this was in 2006-2007) just listening and practicing over and over that listening skill.
We also had to write 4-part music with the correct chord progressions with NO PARALLEL FIFTHS. And we had to be able to sight read and sing for the AP exam, which wasn’t a big deal for me since I have a choir background, but people in my class who were in band or orchestra were less confident about it.
It was hard, but I learned so much about music.

My AP euro day to day is just lectures and notes. He literally takes it like a college class. It’s the stress of studying every detail that is on the quizzes. They aren’t even from a textbook they just be pulled out of thin air. But besides that it’s chill as hell and I’m breezing by. There is students pulling with 50s don’t get me wrong but I feel like it humbles us since we are kids not used to having to study for anything since our honors classes were to us.

Took German in high school all four years and AP in my senior year. I had a really great teacher and I had a pretty solid grasp of the language at that point so it was mostly easy for me. The most difficult part is sticking with it and applying yourself.
Not everyone was able to pick it up as easily as I was however… In German 3 I knew students who always struggled. One dude I knew was a nice guy but for his sanity, I hoped that he wouldn’t try for another year. His lack of progress would have made German AP increasingly more difficult unless he studied twice as hard as everyone else *at least.*
My best piece of advice for learning any language is, “Nothing will stop you being creative more effectively as the fear of making a mistake.” -John Cleese. The students who were least afraid to make mistakes often did the best. And boy was my guy afraid to make mistakes.

@@UniqueRaliefor me, who had a really easy time in the class due to the lack of teaching by my teacher all year, the exam was very tough. I’ve never been all that interested in biology either. However, I ended up getting a 4 on the exam, which was definitely not the score I thought I was going to get. The difficulty of the class is very dependent on the teacher (in my case, it was an easy class but it screwed most of us over), so it might be worth your while asking people who have already taken the course at your school specifically what the class is like. :)

AP statistics was probably the easiest math class I took. Super easy to understand it was just the homework that killed me. Everyday i would have to do 12 questions and each question had an a, b and c section. It would end up filling up like 4 notebook pages front and back. Also took both AP lit and AP Lang and gotta say it really wasn't too hard. I think our teachers really helped us out with it tho and made us understand everything. All of my essays for these classes would come out minimum at a 85%. But for our mock essays for the AP exam I would get like a 2 or 3😭. Would not recommend AP lang/lit but would definitely recommend AP statistics.
