My long opinion about why Japan is suddenly so popular as a tourist destination that nobody asked for: I think Japanese pop culture got more and more mainstream over the last 15-20 years. Japanese cars and technology and general emphasis on quality products have been widely embraced for a long time and created a rapport and curiosity with people. Also the peak of the Travel Channel (when it was actually travel, and not just dumb ghost hunting shows) was in the mid 2000’s when I was a kid. So I saw so many of my favorite travel channel personalities raving over their time in Japan, and the pop culture was familiar to me because it was starting to be adopted by other kids my age. I grew up watching Pokémon, sailor moon, Naruto, etc like it was any other cartoon on TV. It wasn’t something you had to seek out online or at a DVD shop. Naruto was on Cartoon Network every weekday at 4:00pm, exactly when I got home from school. I loved that show not because I was an “otaku”. It was just on my TV, and I liked it better than the other shows aimed at my age group. So I became curious about where it came from. Anthony Bourdain was my hero as a kid, and I always dreamed about visiting Japan after I saw his visits and how he enjoyed his time there. I had a really bad life/childhood, so watching the Travel Channel was an escape and gave me hope that I could see amazing things one day 🥰 I think that period of the travel channel influenced a lot of present day travel vloggers. When I was in high school RUclips really blew up and there were travel vloggers showing Japan (especially Tokyo), and language channels making “basic survival Japanese phrases” accessible. By the time I was an adult, Japan wasn’t something totally mysterious or an unknown place entirely off my radar. I’d heard about it a lot by then! And people were talking about much more than anime. The Travel Channel and RUclipsrs talked about food, history, culture, activities, etc. So I think a lot of people around my age (right between Gen Z and millennial) grew up with a “connection” of sorts to Japan. The idea of visiting Tokyo didn’t feel any different than considering to visit Paris or London or Rome. And people a little older than me (firmly in the millennial generation) had expendable income, the desire to travel, and lots of tech jobs that would pay for their travel to Japan (and South Korea, and China, and Germany, etc). These millennials would go to Japan and tell people about it, document it on RUclips for other people, or even bring people with them (that’s how I visited the first time). The internet really made Japan seem very accessible, and I think Japan has really leaned into promoting itself to tourists via the internet and it’s been working extremely well. I think when you moved to Japan it was not an accessible or well known place to visit. Many people who wanted to go to Japan at that point were either very curious, adventurous people like you. Or people like PVG who had a personal connection. Or some sketchy, weirdos who had a weird idea about women in Japan or idolized Otaku culture. People really only talked about niche subcultures like Otaku and Kawaii culture for a long time rather than talking about Japan as a whole, because people just didn’t know much else about Japan. Now Tokyo is on the same level of interest and accessibility as all of the other major tourist cities of the world. Obviously Japan has so many appealing and unique aspects that would get almost anyone interested in visiting! And people have discovered that it’s actually really an extremely safe place to visit, unlike many other places, which is a very big deal. With a little research on google and RUclips anyone can feel totally confident and prepared to visit for the first time, now. It seems like there was a major, sudden shift in global interest in Japan as a tourist destination somewhere in the last 10 years (I don’t know the numbers, so I’m just going on what I’ve noticed), but I think it came from an accumulation of circumstances that happened over the last two decades 🥰
Gen Xers in the 1980's grew up with Japan as this futuristic world across the Pacific; interest about Japan didn't start with millennials. I recall tons tv shows in the 80's and 90's about how cool Japan was. 😊
I really enjoy these videos with you two talking about normal, everyday stuff. I’d like if you’d talk about the whole school uniform thing again and other regular everyday things

Have been thinking about why Japan has become so popular in recent years, as I moved to live in Japan in 1988, where I lived for many years with my Japanese husband and raised our three kids. Back then I rarely saw another gaijin. From my viewpoint it has definitely been due to social media and influencers as people can easily be armchair viewers of people’s travel vlogs. They have made travel around Japan seem easy, and accessible.
Back in the day…all we really had was a well-thumbed copy of Lonely Planet!

I had mine too! Pre-internet. Those little maps with stars on where to go, with a number below. Always could meet other travelers, we went to the same spots! I’d have thought SNS would have done more than recommend the same places. Golden Route has never been more crowded.

So fun seeing you and Peter sharing time together and allowing us to be there vicariously. Speaking of vicarious experiences we just got back to Alaska from several weeks in Japan. When in Hiroshima we rode the Dragonfly Street Car. Just as we were about to get off Peter's voice was heard as he made reference to "The Dragonfly" ride. (If it wasn't Peter, it was a very good imposter.) In Tokyo we were "enjoying" an Imperial Palace Ground tour under the rainy skies. Later we caught your livestream at Shibuya that was filmed concurrently under the same rainy sky. That made for a "You Found Me" vicarious share as well. :)

My wife has been in the U.S. 25 years after leaving Japan at age 30. She taught English in Japan but her goal was to come to the U.S. after spending time here as an exchange student. Today she works as a translator/interpreter. I've been trying to convince her that we leave California and move to Japan but she has no interest. We visit annually but hopefully beginning next year we can live in Japan three to six months a year avoiding the hot and humid summer months.
I was there from the 60s until the mid 80s, and returned during the Tohoku quake/tsunami, but up north in Iwate. I wonder how different I'd find it. Would love to come home and spend some time there again. I miss being in Japan. We were in Hiroshima primarily, and school was in Tokyo (Higashi Kurume), and we cabin in Nojiri in Nagano. I still feel the same, that Japan is everything to me, but know it would be different than when I was there. Thanks for this.

I think Japan has become more accessible to Americans. It's reasonably easy to get around major cities and sights.

Being able to watch videos and seeing Japanese things on the internet make it easier for tourists because it takes some of the culture shock away. It’s been over 20 years since I visited for work, but I’m comfortable in surroundings like Japan.

The long Japan stagflation definitely played a role in attracting more foreign tourists. Though as far as I've known ever since the early 2000s, Australians have always picked either Thailand, Hong Kong or Japan as places to visit whenever they travel to Asia. Note: I'm not old enough to judge the before-times :p.
And for the winter season tourists: sometime around 2015 it became cheaper to travel to Japan and snowboard/skii there compared to staying at our local resorts (so long as you're staying for at least a week or longer). It was around that time where there were enough expats running around in popular resorts like Niseko and Hakuba all season long, so you could always find someone there to snowboard/skii with.
Great time to visit Japan as the exchange rate from USD to Yen is over ¥152 to $1 and probably will continue to go higher since it has been increasing ever since January.

Actually about the thing that Japan isn't for everyone...
I love Japan and I went here like every year 2012-2019 including working holiday... Now I decided to come with a Student Visa for 2 years and I am only on my 4th day of language school but I am already frustrated a lot :/
Even though I choose a school that was supposed to focus on non asian students there are almost only Chinese (their Japanese sounds so horrible) and the school is only in Japanese (which I knew before) and I don't understand most of the stuff.
even though we had an assignment test I (going to take N5) am in the same class as people taking and some even completed the N3 test already ... they speak rather good Japanese and I sit there and understand nothing.
I need to learn much more and much faster then I expected which is bad as I never actively learned anything in my life it all just came to me but that doesn't seem to work with Japanese especially with the speed we are going in school ;(
At the second day I was already thinking like "what am I doing here" and the only thing stopping me from giving up is that I love Japan and that I already paid school for 2 years 😂

My interest in Japan started when I was an exchange student in highschool there ;40 years ago.Japan was all the craze back in the early eighties thanks to Shogun.Japan was doing well then too;I enjoyed some quality cultural ripeness then.❤
On the topic of watching a channel without subscribe, I do that a lot. I'm very restrictive about who I subscribe to and still I have almost 130 channels in my subscription list. Many of those doesn't publish videos too often and some may even have stopped since many years. But I keep them in case they return someday. Still I get more videos in my subscription feed then I have time to watch and I spend way too much time on YT as it is. I'm pretty sure a long time ago that you could categorize subscriptions in folders or something like that. If I could do that today and then filter my feed based on what topic I feel like watching at the moment, I would subscribe to many more channels. Interesting videos in my feed may get pushed down too quickly and I never watch them or in best case find them much later. I know that the algorithm will suggest videos to me from channels I watch from time to time anyway, even if I don't subscribe to them.

I always give thumbs up and a lot of time I subscribe to the channel plus I forward videos to friends if I think is interesting or put in my FB feed. I have put many videos from John in my FB feed. Forward it to people that are interested in Japan. My niece will be going for the second time to visit Japan again. She would like to teach there but it is hard to find info how to go about it. Would be nice if you would do videos with info for people that wants to move to Japan.
I have never been to Japan, but I have been to the USA. Watching the videos and NHK, etc, Japan reminds me of the USA.
Japan does seem to be more tourist "friendly." Probably more for economic reasons. Japan seems to be sort of stuck in the " buble burst time."

Sure, it’s worth a try! Almost all require a college degree, you’ve got that, you should be able to find a job if you can pass the interview.

So question: when I was there, they didn't want foreign nurses, which I am. Do they allow them at this time, or is it still the same way. I have forgotten a lot of my Japanese and would need to relearn a lot. But it would be a dream to return as a nurse. During the tsunami, up north, I was able the join the nurses in two places to help out in the shelter, but a only several times. I could have stayed in one town but my team was moving further south.
Things have changed fast, the need is great! If you’re a nurse, you’re very much in demand! Japan has started new visas for those with skills, this being an important one. I’d look again, try again.

Just me, I found it inconvenient to subscribe or add comments when watching RUclips on preset tv like Roku, Hisense, Google etc. it’s so easy to do those things on my IPad. Unfortunately I watch most RUclips clips only on tv.

Awesome! For Amity though. I was really good at it, adapt, fix, conquered, return school in better shape than other schools around the area! The head of amity called me a mommy-killer 😂 they signed up fast back then, but I was just having fun, working with the managers on their goals and listening to parents on theirs. Skills that set me up after this job. Way more than just teaching as you know. Nagano was huge because of the Winter Olympics, everyone was studying English then. That was one area I didn’t teach in.

There used to be a Caucasian guy in the mid 2000s who lived in Japan. He looked a bit like his late 30s or early 40s. I can’t recall his name, but he did a review on a Canon vixia camcorder. I think his name was Hinosa?? Or something like that. Anyone remember?

I'm a blue collar worker in America without a degree and would love to work abroad in Japan. What are my choices 😆 if any
Dunno, it’s hard because there is a lot of competition for those jobs now. Everyone has a degree. But many leave - if you were to stay for 3-5 years and say that, it may be an advantage. Consistency is pretty good for teaching. Not sure what else there is, I do my own thing now 😉 but there is a HUGE NEED for so many occupations, but you need experience in them, like driving a taxi or bus!

Ironically I have worked in the Anim and manga industry remotely. To be able to do this, one has to understand so much cultural sub context and context and implied context. Otherwise you won't be trusted and won't even get ypur foot on the door past the simplest subsidized tasks. It dissapoints me and frankly some times angers me to see people diss anime and manga in Japan like that as if being inspired by that country's specific art form is bad. I get the type of ppl you refer to. The surface level pococron slice of life lolly obsessed or ftishising dudes and even girls. BUT that is a very small percentage that give this indistry a bad look. Esp those of us who seriously work in it and those who seriously love it for what it is beyond a superficial fantasy. There is nothing wrong with wanting to go to Japan form truly being inspired by manga and Anime. Nothing.
I wonder if Frenchie loves sleeping with Peter's kids, wife, or him. I'd bet on the wife.

You can’t (that I’m aware of) unless it’s international. You need a Japan address and ID.
