@@yolo_zen That definitely makes sense. I figure you know this already, but according to his Wikipedia page, he definitely went left the public eye following his album in 2007. I found a write-up on the now defunct ambientmusicguide website. As you said, one of his collaborators, Phonaut, who managed Inoue's website had been keeping quiet out of respect. It seems that Inoue would send him short emails, notes, holiday cards, and CD's, but that stopped. Not sure when, exactly, but if I'm reading the posts correctly, around 2012? I definitely am not one to be a pessimist. I try to be optimistic about things, but Pete Namlook suggested that Inoue may have passed away in the 2011 tsunami. Before Namlook passed away in 2012, he had been searching for Inoue so that he could pay Inoue shares from CD sales. Someone posted that they checked an incomplete list of those who were victims of the tsunami, but Tetsu Inoue's name was not there. Interestingly, a friend of Inoue and Ingrid Baier (Inoue's girlfriend at the time) from the US named Andy Thomas (Inoue listed under the special thanks in his "Sending Orbs" album) posted that Inoue returned to Japan due to an ailing father and wanting to live closer to his parents (that post was made around 2019/2020...). Thomas apparently moved to Japan a few years ago but hasn't had any luck with Inoue's whereabouts in terms of searching around and asking mutual friends. Someone replied that they've been living in Kyushu (where Inoue is from) for the past 30 years and hypothesized that it's an easy area to drop out of sight in. Andy Thomas did say that when they lived in California, Inoue "...was always seeking solitude..." and would often drive away, and stay in the catskills for a bit and spent a decent amount of time in nature. I hope I didn't get any of this stuff wrong, and it's the internet, so of course, people can say things, but I'd like to believe that this is the actual Andy Thomas. It definitely seems like the person is being authentic. Anyway, I believe I discovered his music late last year (I think...) I was listening to Stingray Music this morning and this song popped up. Stingray keeps putting Ambiant Otaku instead of just for the album, but I came to youtube since it's not available on Spotify. Magnicifcent work by Mr. Inoue! I've procrastinated quite a bit typing this out, but I just had to dig into this and ended up going down the rabbit hole, hahaha. +skywatcher - i just discovered tetsu and the "world receiver" yesterday - i´m a musician since the early 70s and a sound explorer/home recorder since the late 70s and worked a lot with tape loops and weird noises - believe it or not, a long time ago i recorded sounds from a world receiver and tried to make music like that - i failed, my skills were obviously not good enough - plus for long years i tried to make shifting music like this and wasn´t really successful - i came to do this because in my childhood during the 60s i spent hours in front of my dad´s tube radio listening to short wave, exploring the alien sounds on there, the ever shifting, twisting music that often faded into one another just like that, my musical adventure - i´m so happy to have found a musician who got it done so very well as tetsu - great work... this is the soft floating version, if you want to have it a bit more "brittle", try "jan jelinek - tierbeobachtungen" - also a master in his own way... i just caught myself thinking: man, did that take long, i am bloody 60 now! how cool ist that?!? happy....................................... :-) edit: i´m at about 35:00 now - it sounds quite similar to one of my early 80s loops, haha... (i didn´t have that spacy sound around though, just the "naked" loop, mind you, i had only one reel to reel tape recorder for my work)
I get the feeling, and even if my background is not as fitting as yours i consider 'World Receiver' to be a total masterpiece, an absolute joy to listen. Easily my favourite from Inoue along Shades of Orion 2. Ambiant Otaku is not far behind (another master piece) and was definitely an eye opener but i´ll stick with World Receiver as the most creative and evocative. Those samples...
@@skywatcher1972 Ambiant Otaku is such a classic and the best entry album from him imo, but World Receiver is a total masterpiece and possibly my favorite ambient album ever.
I live by the Atlantic ocean in Canada. This CD came to my attention one hot July day in 2005 and I put it on while sitting out in my hammock in the garden overlooking a glistening sea and whales breaching in the distance while seagulls and gannets circled overhead. You have to try this some day!
Be Aware Do you live in Newfoundland by any chance or visited and formed an opinion of it ? Later this year it’s possible I’ll be taking over the management of a small inn there and if it works out I will try to gain citizenship. I’ve seen beautiful pictures and read convincing government issues hype but I’d like to hear the impressions of a Canadian with no dog in this fight as the expression goes. If you’ve spent any time there your impressions would be very valuable to me and appreciated. I’m sure there’s got to be a more innovative and beautiful ambient album than this but I’ve yet to hear it. The completely weightless Essence/Universe by Laraaji has long been a favorite but this one is just amazing.
Definitely one of the best ambient albums ever made. Someone needs to find him and bring him back to music making. I just love living in the musical world he created in this album - even for just an hour at a time.
I have no idea how I even found Tetsu Inoue, it was probably 20 years ago now, maybe more I'm not sure really, that's a scary thought. I had no previous experience with ambient music and no real desire to listen to it, but ambient otaku drew me in ... I remember laying in the dark one night listening, sinking in to this other world of sound, colour and texture it was almost a psychedelic experience, before I even knew what that was in a time before real worries and commitments. This album and artist has stayed with me. I still wonder if he was a real person, I suppose it doesn't really matter, if he is I hope he is well and realises the impact of his creations. If not... well, thank you to all involved if you ever happen to read this.
he was/is real. There is an interview with him somewhere with photos etc. And he appears in the electronic film "Modulations", sampling the Microwave oven etc at his house
I gave the Great Tetsu Inoue #112 approval; he warrants ten fold this number. All of his themes challenge the mind as to what the underlying Psychologies may be. It's deep, tantalizingly deep, and yet something is there; a Vision? A History, or histories? Selected slices of Time in a book called "Ambient Otaku"! I salute you Inoue.
