Solo Alligator Hunt in a Jon Boat 2018 Opening Day

  • This is an alligator hunt that happened on the opening day of the 2018 Florida alligator season. This was a solo hunt where I tried to record all that happened. Doing this by yourself can be tricky, so hopefully, you picked up a few tricks from this video and can apply them to your hunts! I tried my best to keep it RUclips friendly.
    I am hunting out of a 2016 Alumacraft that is a 1436 LT with a Swamp Runner Mud Motor on it. I built a deck and floor for it, making it a very versatile jon boat. I use this boat for everything I can do on the water like hunting, fishing, traveling, and so much more.
    A lot of the alligator hunting equipment that I use was homemade or pieced together but one thing that I absolutely love is the Gator Pro bangstick. A MUST have for any alligator hunter. If you still need all the equipment, this is an effortless way to get it all in a package - huntinglight.com/Professional... There is .357, 410, 44magnum, and .223 for the bang stick. I use a 357. These are the absolute best, and I would use no other bang stick. They do have a package set up which is a good price if you're buying all your equipment at one time.
    Any questions, please feel free to ask! If you saw something you liked in the video, and you're not sure what it was, check my Amazon store and you may be able to find it there - amazon.com/shop/jtgatoring
    Thank you for watching! I hope this video was able to help you and that you enjoyed it! If you liked it, please give it a thumbs up! If you would like to see more videos like this, please subscribe to help support the channel and to help it grow!

    Much respect for doing that alone!! That is a LOT of work that most won’t appreciate until they attempt it. It’s hard enough with 2-3 people that know what to do etc using poles, snares, snatch hooks etc but doing all that alone puts you on another level.

    "Right where I did not want him to go..." = key plot element of EVERY gator hunt I've had to date! In all seriousness, no easy thing with one that sized when alone as so many things that can go wrong in an instant. Congrats on the harvest!

    @16:40 fishing line, treble hook line, harpoon going on... crazy.... glad you didn't fall over or lose a toe.... tight lines and flip flops usually don't mix well :) Very cool video, thanks for sharing.

    • @JTgatoring

      Tell ya the truth @Hise Chapman, handling the alligator in this light jon boat makes it a lot easier. As long as my feet are planted the gator pulls the boat and I don't feel it as much compared to being on a bigger boat where the alligator can't move that big boat so you end up absorbing a lot more force from that alligator. I know it's not the best to be fighting an alligator in flip flops 😅 especially with all the ropes and lines going on haha thank you for watching!!

The even better part (to me) is watching you go through the process using the boat with all of your modifications. I hope you consider showing us how you process the gator after the hunt. It is a lot of work with getting ready for the season, getting one, processing it, and some more odd end things but still makes for an unforgettable memory and I'm just glad I can share my experiences with others 😁 The jon boat has come a long ways and its crazy to think back on what has happened with it up to now🙈 thank you again for the awesome feedback SluSharkND!!

    Very nice video. If you haven't figured out a system by now I was able to rig up a pole holder that fit over the stanchion. Basically there were six tubes and the middle tube fit over the stanchion. Just thought I would throw it out there in case you're still trying to figure out what to do there. I used mine in the back of the boat so that when we hooked on a Gator we can move all the poles to the back and get it out of the way.

I used a closed door on the gopro on the motor to keep it waterproof, and then used the open door on the head mount one to improve the audio. I know use a GoPro 7 that picks up great audio as long as it doesn't get wet. For future videos, I plan to use the hero 7 for audio based video, and then I use the hero 3+ black gopros with the solid back doors to stay waterproof for footage that doesn't need the audio. Great combo for what I do. This is the hero 7 I got - amzn.to/3bKfvXk you can't buy the hero 3+ new anymore so maybe ebay or craigslist or just get the 7. The main thing I liked about the hero 3+ is that you didn't have to take the camera out of the case to replace the battery. The hero 7 you gotta take the camera out of the case to get the battery. Other than then the 7 is great

      832 suffix 30lb braid. It's my normal saltwater rig. I do have a backup rod that I call a stump rod and that has 200lb on it with a bigger real but prefer to use a hand line with a treble hook. If I'm in a small boat, I can use the hand line and the gator just pulls me around. No need to worry about being pulled in or worrying about a drag system.

      @JTgatoring  5 лет назад +2

      For the reasons you mentioned above. There is a good amount of people traffic on this water with people who kayak and paddleboard who are vulnerable to curious alligators. With a healthy number of alligators in this area, the state assigns a certain amount of tags to keep numbers where they should be. Once the alligator is dispatched, it's up to the hunter if they want to sell the whole alligator, or do with it what they want. Normally what I do is what I did with this one. I processed the alligator myself. I got 40 pounds of meat from it, I'm turning the hide into leather, and making a mount out of the skull so very little waste of the carcass. I enjoy prepping for the hunt. the hunt itself, and the benefits after a successful hunt so I do it for the sport too.

      Normal kernmantle rope. I just went into a hardware store and felt out the rope to see what was best in my hands.

      @@dylanjohnson6361 Awesome man! Congrats! The rope I have floats so maybe also look for a rope that sinks... I don't like the way it floats. It messes with the snag hook and hard to read the rope when you're trying to find out where your trouble hook is while you have it in the water.

    Bending down to work that trolling motor seems so sketchy to me, with a gator hooked. I feel like youre in danger of being snatched in everytime you do that.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 года назад

      Haha you get a feeling for where the gator is at. The only hesitation I had was when that mouth was right at the boat side and I had to grab it to tape it. Thats when things felt sketchy to me hahah same with when that tail starts to move after you start to drive back to the ramp 😳

      @@JTgatoring Lol yeah i kind of figured you had an idea of his whereabouts. Great Job snagging that big boy all by yourself!!!
      I learned in your comments that the bang stick is the only legal way to hunt them in FLA (pretty dumb rule if ya ask me) I too am in FLA, brevard county. Question what was the yellow stick? Harpoon??? Is that also legal requirement whilst FLA gator hunting?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 года назад +1

      @@iitzDiRTY It was work and I had my fill of it. I got stuck cleaning the 11 footer I got two years ago due to the market being so bad that people weren't buying gators and that was a JOB processing that animal. Needed a break from gatoring after that. Correct. A bang stick is the only "firearm" you can use to dispatch them for public tags. I guess they try to make it more gamey and sporty instead of just harvesting with a gun. Yes, the yellow stick is a harpoon and an even better push pole hahaha it is not required for gator hunting. I've gotten a few gators by just snagging them with a treble hook and banging them before they knew what happened. If you snag and pull on them without jerking, they don't really fight you as much and come floating up to the surface. If you're quick with the bangstick before they are able to look around after catching their breath you can end it quickly and that's how I prefer to do it.

      It is illegal to use a rifle or handgun for the public hunts in Florida. Its either a bang stick or an axe. I prefer a bang stick
