because the republican party is as racist as those guys in the monuments . Things are as obvious as Trump cheating on taxes THEY ARE RACIST AND IF THEY WANT WAR THEN WE SHOULD GIVE THEM THAT. RACISM IS A CANCER UNLESSS THE RACIST STOP BREATHING THEY WILL NEVER STOP ITS CLEAR THEY ARE NOT SATISFIED WIRH CO EXISTING SO KILL THEM ALL OR GIVE THEM ULTIMATUM. EITHER THEY STOP WIT THE BS OR STAY HOME AND NEVER COME OUT OR GO TO EUROPE IF U ONLY WANNA SEE WHITE PPL MOVE OUT LEAVS FOR GOOD. LIKE THE TRAITOR TRUMP USED TO SAY ABOUT THE CONGRESSWOMEN. I SEE THIS AND I SEE GROWN MAN WHO PLAYED A COMPETITION AND THEY LOST AND YEARS HAVE PASSED AND THEY CANT GET OVER IT. BUT AS FAR AS STATUES REMOVE THEM IF NOT PUT STATUES OF MLK AND ALL BLACK ACTIVIST THRU OUT THE SOUTH THAT WAY THERE IS SOME KIND OF REALITY CHECK. CUZ IS CONFUSING WHY WOULD THERE BE A STATUE OF A SLAVE OWNER ? THERS NO STATUES OF HITLER SO WHY LOSER CONFEDERATE RACIST DESERVE A STATUE IF I WAS PRESIDENT ILL BE LIKE HELL NA TAKE THEM ALL TO A MUSEUM AND CALL IT "MUSEUM FOR THE WORST PEOPLE IN AMERICAN HISTORY AND LETS PUT STATUES OF OBAMA ALL OVER THE PLACE HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST WE SHOULD CELEBRATE OUR SMART PEOPLE NOT OUR IGNORANT HATEFILLED RACIST TRAITORS AND LOSERS !

      Leonaza7,
I agree. But it goes further than that. We have glorified statues of General Grant and he is responsible for the worst genocide event in Us history. The genocide of the American Natives.
My ancestors were slaves in Georgia. When the union soldiers came through the did plenty of rape and destruction . Four of my ancestors were raped and killed by Union soldiers. The north did not have the institution of slaver , but they were as racist as anyone in the south. This young man who made the documentary seems very disingenuous bc he fails to mention that the north was no avenging angels. When it comes to black history in the Civil war era we are still looking it as a clear moral divide. There was racism in the north and south.
No one wanted us or considered as equals, Americans.

I've seen statues of WWII German soldiers in parks in Germany. I think most of us would refer to them as NAZIS. The one I'm thinking of was huge. Larger than life scale of 6 German WWII era soldiers carrying a casket of a fallen comrade. And even this statue was surrounded by a huge hedgerow with just a single, almost hidden entrance. And, I'm o.k. with that despite my own ancestry. The fallen should be remembered from the North and the South just as the German lives that were lost in WWII should be remembered...in class rooms and in statue tribute.

If statues are to be removed, don't just zero in on Confederate ones. The Founding Fathers shouldn't be given a pass. But whenever the Fathers are brought up many times it will be said, "They may have been slave owners and that was terrible but they never fought to keep slavery. Which is bull. Maybe not on a battlefield but they fought in Congress and relied on the Constitution to help with their ownership of slaves. The specific clauses of the Constitution related to slavery were the Three-Fifths Clause, the ban on Congress ending the slave trade for twenty years, the fugitive slave clause, and the slave insurrections. Let's also don't forget the Gag Rule. It would also mean that we would have to change our Capital's name (sorry George) and anything associated in name with any Founding Father who owned slaves. It would also mean a new flag since Old Glory is tainted by slavery as it flew on most every slave ship. But it's so much easier to just zero in on Confederates, right Nancy? Lastly, I would love to know what happened to all the knowledgeable historians who know the brave deeds of both North and South. They all have seemed to develop a case of muteness. It's now that we need to hear from you, helping us understand what occurred all those years ago. The only historian I have heard from is Ken Burns and he was quickly covering his butt concerning his film, The Civil War. It an excellent film but old Ken needed to make sure he kiss that liberal butt never mind the fact he made a bank off of it. I personally wish that our Founding Fathers would have had the guts to stop slavery then and there. Instead you had statesmen like Jefferson saying, "Slavery is like holding a wolf by the ears, you don't like it but you don't dare let it go". I wish more people understood that while most Southerners hate that slavery happened they aren't about to disown their ancestors who lived in those times. As far as those statues are concerned good or bad, some see their ancestors in those statues. In my opinion, take them all down, but as you are taking them down just please remember a couple of facts, the statues may go but no one can change what happened no matter how terrible it was. Also a slave plantation regardless who owned it in whatever time, it was still slavery.

Regardless of the era of slavery, masters always had the right to free their slaves at any time. It always amuses me whenever I hear someone say Washington was a good master. Really? If that was the case then none would have escape from his ownership. But some did. Visit the slave burial ground at Mount Vernon. The good master didn't have the decency to mark the graves. They now rest as unknowns. Note he chose to free his slaves when he died. Smooth move there George. He had no more use for them so now you can have your freedom. Ironically some of the slaves that worked the Arlington plantation came from Mount Vernon. While I hate that slavery ever occurred I also am not fond of looking at history with modern eyes. But if we must do that then we should be fair in our judgement of the unforgivable stain on our nation.

The reason why it's so controversial and we're still having this conversation is because after the north win the war they simply didn't kill enough leaders from the south. They did not kill enough of them they did not execute enough of them they did not bring enough of them up on charges. They did not imprison enough of them. And then when they had the civil rights movement in the South the federal government went down there and again they didn't execute any of them for treason or any reason at all for murder or anyting they could have executed a bunch of them for a lot of reasons. They didn't imprison really any of them they didn't jail any of them all they did was force them out which made them spread all over the freaking country in particular the north. So that's why we're having that conversation. These idiots have not gone on to win elected seats they've gone on to have children now their children are disgusting and racist.

And yes, we do have museums to store all that stuff and I think that they should go into them cause it is history that we can't ignore. If we don't learn, we can't change. Or at least not in a positive way.

Along with how and why did certain things get here and such? Like the Chinatowns you find in (some) cities and why did we become a county and separated from Britain?
That is why we learn history and that history to me at least, can be good example of what has worked and what has not and all that and to no repeat the past. Cause I don't want another civil war, do you guys?
Feel free to ignore though cause that always happens to me but please don't say stupid flipping swear words and such. Keep things civil people, okay? Is that too much to ask?

Remember though, the 'BRITISH' are the ones to blame here, for our present day 'problems' here, because they brought over Monarchism, which later formed into a type of Capitalism (you know, support the King's & Queen's, our WEALTHY today), under the guise of REPUBLICANS/DEMOCRATS!! Ironically, England is a socialist country today, benefiting everyone.

    Look. its not controversial.
    Its simple,
powerful land owners did not want to pay people to work there fields or break there land up like land lords in Europe at the time(which was highly profitable),
they did not want to pay people and in term pushed the views of viewing black and colored brothers and sisters that are also children of god as being sub human and things, This was wrong to do on so many levels..
so eventually when they were going to have to let them be people as they deserve as a god given right, they committed treason. NOT the average person but the people in power in the south that manipulated the uneducated masses, the Average person was pulled into a war of greed and power over owning fellow children of god as items.
The statues should be gone, dissolved and removed and not glorified as they are, they can be in a museum space, but THAT is it.
And for the people that still view it as a glorified thing i will just quote my grandfather of the time this war was happening:
"only good Reb, is a dead Reb"
    But here is mine:
"If you cant except that this is the world now, then make like your ideology in the way the world views it, Die."

@Angelwing Nipple There are other issues in the Articles of Secession from the States I read them all working on my Masters. I believe that SC listed it first in VA if I remember the list it was if memory serves it was 3rd or 4th. In some states they were considering some form emancipation though not to the tipping point. They wanted to handle it as the Northern States did internally others wanted to keep slavery indefinitely such as SC and Mississippi.
I admit I was a History Major in the mid 70s to early 80s so somethings are a bit hazy. The South was not united on this and many other issues. I read 1000s of pages of copies of original documents and I don't have my Thesis or notes handy.
Slavery was the trigger especially for a lot of states but there were many issues depending on the State, those on the border that went one way or the other often from the debate often listed slavery higher on the list as they saw it as a form of Federalism that was being forced on them.
Some states voted no and later voted yes after an earlier rejection. The levying of 75000 troops changed Virginia's mind...
