Here in the Pacific Northwest the Soul must have the widest demographic appeal of any vehicle. Seattle hipsters, downsizing seniors, small families, car pool commuters, and the snail mail delivery person on my small island in the Puget Sound all drive and love 'em. And speaking of islands, at less than 14' in length the Soul earns a discount on the stiff fares aboard Washington State ferries. Few other vehicles qualify and none with the 66 cubic ft of overall cargo space. Makes those Costco runs a snap. One of the few downsides of the GTLine? The center exhaust makes fitting a trailer hitch difficult if not impossible. And that means bike(s) have to be carried inside or on the roof. All in all the Soul is a magnificent vehicle. Honda and Nissan must kick themselves for failing to hire rodents to sell the Element and the Cube.

Yeah they need an AWD option. I love that my Serria has AWD and I couldn't live without it anymore. Side note: People say why do you need AWD why don't you just put it in 4x4? It turns like shit then so getting out of my parking space can be difficult in 4x4. Also once snow hits the ground or I go offroad I put the truck in AWD and only use 4x4 when I need it. There was talk of an AWD Soul about 5 years ago and KIA explored the possibility. But when they asked Soul owners and potential customers about it they found little demand. In fact, about 1/3rd of current Soul owners believed their vehicle already had AWD. :)
What many who haven't lived in climates with challenging winter conditions don't realize is that a small, light vehicle with the engine weight over the front drive wheels and a good set of snow tires will perform as well as an AWD vehicle about 95% of the time. Kia/Hyundai are offering that 1.6T in damn near everything they sell. I'm more interested in getting it in the Forte or Elantra. The base engines are substantially more efficient though, I wish they could improve the 1.6T in that regard. If you look at numbers and performance data, Kia/Hyundai's 1.6T is very similar to Honda's 1.5T, but Honda's engine is way more efficient..

Since it is a commuter, I would assume it has Brake Hold? And adaptive cruise control?
To me DCT transmission and turbo are negatives in the long run. Too much kidd glove handling needed for that transmission and turbo to me is a future expensive repair waiting to happen. The other Souls including the non turbo GT have a CVT transmission, which I don't have a lot of confidence in either. Good looking little runabout , but give me a normal automatic or sturdy manual transmission..
I wanted to buy a brand new one (which would've been my first new car) but wouldn't you know, 2022 is the year the 6 speed got dropped. I ended up getting a 2021 with 11,000 on the clock. It has steelies with caps but I intend to get snow tires for those and pick up a set of alloys from the dealer once I decide which ones I like best. The one thing I was a little disheartened by when looking at the original window sticker is that even though KIA has a US factory in Georgia, the Soul is not one of the vehicles built there.
The Hyundai Kona Ultimate might be a better buy since there is an AWD option and shares the same 1.6T engine. The Kona has the same Goodyear Eagle tires 235/45/18.
MegaRobot445 This car is very popular and has a loyal fan base. Maybe someone in the aftermarket will add a LED strip inside the stock light bar. I gotta admit that Hyundai/Kia does some great design and engineering. It’s obvious they put a lot of thought into it when you see the clever design and packaging of cars such as the Telluride and Soul. I saw and sat inside a new Telluride and was blown away by the looks, quality, presence, and the sheer amount of space. All in a $32K truck the size of a Ford explorer.
The original design was based on a high top sneaker. Simple and useful. It has gotten too gimmicky for me. The rear floating c pillar stolen from Nissan is a real let down in creativity. We have owned three previous souls. Great cars. My daughter got rear ended on a major highway in her 2012.. The accord that rear ended her was taken away on a flat bed. I drove the soul to the auto body shop. Great car.
It actually looks really nice and sporty, it's really nice inside too. Just wish that it would be reliable and long lasting like Toyotas and Hondas, then it would be just perfect. But Scotty says that Kias still aren't reliable and long lasting like a Toyota or a Honda!!!!.
Jose S.M. I had 2011 Kia Soul some years ago....got hit by a nasty blizzard on my way home from work around 1 am. Probably dumped about 6 inches of snow in an hour, made it home with relative ease. Since the car is so compact to begin with it’s honestly hard to lose control and if you do it’s very easy to get her back on track. You won’t be driving through no mountains but she’ll hold her own in some pretty rough weather.
@@swinglow6580 im actually going this weekend to the dealer to try it and also ask some questions and get opinions on it. Aside from the looks, the price point is amazing! Id be saving thousands versus the CRV!

Rented a 2019 when my car was in the shop to see if it might be my next car. Nope, hate the start/stop "feature" that can't be reliably disabled. The switch for start/stop could be enabled or disabled when you restart the vehicle each time.
@@smudgeone Seriously? All these vehicles have a switch on the dash to enable/disable the stop/start and it will decide on its own whether it will respect that decision each time you restart the engine? Who owns this car when I put my money down, me or the manufacturer?
That’s the law for start/stop systems. For the manufacturer to claim the better fuel mileage using the system, it must be the default setting. EPA regulations. There are cars that don’t have the feature. Buy those.
I got a recall for my wife's soul regarding something about the catalytic converter being damaged and the extent of the damage could range from new cat to new engine entirely. All our soul got was an update to prevent the problem but that definitely raised an eyebrow from me

It's not a crossover because no AWD? If you *buy* a SUV *without* AWD, which is the larger take rate in the US, is it not still a crossover? AWD doesn't = crossover IMO. Otherwise any bought without AWD is not one either. Just being available shouldn't be the standard.
They don’t tell you that a couple months down the road you’re going to be replacing the transmission. Had my 2020 KIA soul for 7 months only 4,000 miles and the transmission went out. Apparently the cvt transmissions they put in these are garbage.

dont ever pre rev a dual clutch, youll kill your transmission
Had a Kia Soul as an airport rental. It was actually very nice and comfortable inside. Still hideous outside
Bang up job, Nathan!
It looks like a mini Land Rover Discovery
The discovery is butt fugly
Hey Nathan, what kind of shades are you wearing? They look good. Thanks
I'm seriously considering this as my first car. A used 2020 Kia Soul in Neptune Blue with some custom white and silver Pin striping and maybe an Autobot Insignia.
😅🚙
I never gave much thought for the soul. Then I bought a used 2016 model. It's the base model so it's underpowered, but very comfortable. Nice little comuter.
Nathan's love was the wheels and tires. Something we can change out. lol And if you are in the snow, you will need to make the diameter smaller so you can wrap them with chains. ;) The HUD is about the only thing that caught my attention. Since it is a commuter, I would assume it has Brake Hold? And adaptive cruise control?
The ultimate man-bun hamster-mobile.
These cars a literally burning up the market!
nathan civic sport touring hatchback or soul gt-line what would you pick?
IMO, not sounding great is an acceptable compromise. For that segment, more concerned with having added pep than acoustics.
Nathan, do you like the Soul GT as well as or better than the Hyundai Kona Turbo?
Engine cover to deaden that direct injection tick!
My state requires a license plate in the front. Where would it go?
Great review. Thanks. Kia Soul's a great lil car. Good reliability. I just wish they'd offer an AWD option.
Unfortunately it looks like we don't get the 1.6 L turbo in Canada. Shame, I might have been interested.
If you ask for it, they'll send it over from US with CAN specs.
The rear lights would’ve been one of the coolest lights ever if it connected in all honesty
Maybe there will be aftermarket kits.
Great car.
I'm sure if you forget the kimchi in the rear, the rodents will love it. 28 large is a bit much for a little red box.
So ... where & how do you mount a front license plate?
Phillip Probst @ why ruin the front of the car with a license plate? I would rather pay the citation!
In Russia with the rest of the communists.
It actually looks really nice and sporty, it's really nice inside too. Just wish that it would be reliable and long lasting like Toyotas and Hondas, then it would be just perfect. But Scotty says that Kias still aren't reliable and long lasting like a Toyota or a Honda!!!!.
The fact that is not AWD makes me very sad. I live in Ohio when I'm determined to get an AWD I dont get stuck in snow ever again x.x
Jose S.M. Exactly, try it out bud; you’ll love it. Great great car. I drive sorento now but only because my son and the gear I need to haul, but otherwise I’d probably still have it today.
Unfortunately we don't get the turbo in Canada.
Consider the electric model it's fast too
Its a mean looking cool lil car..I like it. Thanks Nathan
Rented a 2019 when my car was in the shop to see if it might be my next car.
Nope, hate the start/stop "feature" that can't be reliably disabled.
The switch for start/stop could be enabled or disabled when you restart the vehicle each time.
Start stop is on the majority of cars in 2019 and all that I've seen function as you describe.
Buy those.
My 2020 Soul doesn't have that, but it has a 6 speed manual
Did they fix their engine problem. My kids 2014 Kia souls engine went at 54,000 miles
I got a recall for my wife's soul regarding something about the catalytic converter being damaged and the extent of the damage could range from new cat to new engine entirely. All our soul got was an update to prevent the problem but that definitely raised an eyebrow from me
Leave it to Nathan to admire the back of the car the most. 😂 I'm guessing his Mrs Adlen is THIIIICCCKKK!. 😂 As well as a ball breaker "oh she who must be Obeyed." 😂
Seriously though glad to see Nathan in a vid again. Andre, Tommy and Roman can are great but I miss Nathan.
Nathan is on TFLNow quite a bit.
Next video: What’s faster a Ford fiesta ST or Kia soul GT
Such a light and bright ending. Should we worry about you? 😂
My son had a 2010 ran well it had over 220k when an accident took it out. He had a minor frontend collision under
10 mph lets just say their bumpers are crap. There nothing there to protect the ac and the radiator.
It's not a crossover because no AWD? If you *buy* a SUV *without* AWD, which is the larger take rate in the US, is it not still a crossover? AWD doesn't = crossover IMO. Otherwise any bought without AWD is not one either. Just being available shouldn't be the standard.
I loved the Kia soul i rented when I was travelling! Only gripe I had was the sound system. I really did appreciate the nature of this car.
I guess he didn't realize he could slide down the cargo floor.
0:55 holy wavy paint LOL>
Yeah!! He deff has the bonzai in him!! haha!
They don’t tell you that a couple months down the road you’re going to be replacing the transmission. Had my 2020 KIA soul for 7 months only 4,000 miles and the transmission went out. Apparently the cvt transmissions they put in these are garbage.
😂😂😂sorry to here that i got a 2021 lx all black kia soul as of right now mine has 8,958 miles on it but this one guy i know brought a 2020 gt line one black and red and he said the cvt went out at 636 miles😂😂😂
And yet Ford and Chevy can’t even make cars that sell so they quit haha. This is a cool car!
I own a kia rio but damn if it had that 1.6 turbo engine it would be so fast
Can't get the 1.6 L turbo in Canada just the base engine too bad.
Is it legal for you to buy a 1.6 turbo in the USA and bring it back?
i rly love how this thing looks tbh haha
beautiful, but, for me, maybe loose the original " air " the original attitud
Sooo... Kia soul gt vs Elantra gt n-line?
Gimmicks are the best, most of the time
Red is Racinggggg
8:30 'if u don't want to hear the exhaust, why r u buying the sport version of the Soul?' Maybe for the same reason people will buy the electric version, for the stealthy performance.
@@Gandalf721 They have an electric Kia Soul that is just as 'sport' as this besides noise
Is Nathan really 6’1”?
he is also fat. :( sorry im too skinny
I’ve always wanted one and I don’t know why.
You want one because it calls to you.
Test drive the electric version
Welcome to America
The hamsters 🐹 on steroids 💪! Lol
Wow~~~~i love it~!!!
Kia soul upgraded from a hamster to a guinea pig
No Soul turbo model is sold in Canada thumbs down to Kia on that moronic decision. Canada gets the shaft with all show NO GO
Lol bought the base 2.0 stronger base motor.... Going to turbo it and make the turbo model look slow lol
Probably blow a hole in the block while your at it to.... lol.
@@J-W.- lol well im not going to boost it to 800whp 😆 was thinking more so between 400-500 would be nice
And these cars are so easy to steal SMH Kia is not doing anything about the issue. My neighbors car got stolen.
Hitting the 'lock' button on the key fab doesn't do the job?
@@Johnny-hn9ts lol You must be living under a rock for you not to know that they are breaking in and stealing them. Look up Kia boys or how to steal a Kia.
There’s dozens of 2wd crossovers.
Were I live the Kia Soul will only be sold as electric.
The electric Soul might have more torque than the turbo
@@golfish8589 I drove the electric Soul last month. was a realy nice quick car. But it was way to expensive for me.
@@KristoferOlsson yup. Not low cost. Battery costs need to come down more.
If you are ready to go tail free emissions now. It's not a bad car
Where is that? It's probably just as fast as this turbo if not faster. Buy one used off lease pure win. But you do get the tax credits if u buy it new and state incentive.
@@KristoferOlsson if you figure in fuel costs and maintenance and repair savings it more doable. But yah, 35k is a lot of money
Why is this thing $4k more than the Elantra GT N-line???
The electric model will probably be just as fast, something to consider. 201HP, just like this turbo but no lag. What a coincidence. And over 100MPGe. Not mentioned in this video, shame. Also, 29MPG versus the Camry Hybrid with 208HP gets 51MPG so not that impressive!
@@Gandalf721 because of leg room or something along those lines? Kia Soul Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona all have identical drivetrains slightly different EPA ranges
Why would you ever want a manual any more with auto coming with 8+ gears any more your gear ratios are so much better then a 5 speed manual or even 6
Same losers who say vinyl records sound better.
I have a 2021 Kia Soul GT and I have none of these features in my car wtf
I don't get it, instead of Kia doing away with GDI engines because frankly, they're horrible just do a duo port and direct injection.
Looks like a 2015 Scion xb
