The lyrics, "Someone to whom I could relate, your needle and your damage done remains a sordid twist of fate" are a reference to the Neil Young song "The Needle And The Damage Done." Brian Molko explained the song's meaning to Rock Mag in 2006, saying: "The theme of 'Song To Say Goodbye' is keeping only the best aspects of your life. It's the first track I wrote in India. I went there for a lot of reasons, one of them being to try and change my lifestyle. I wanted to make me understand that I should not become a rock'n'roll cliché and that the world doesn't need another dead rock star. I've written it as a letter to myself." This video isn't the best way to hear this music for the first time because it turns a song of 3:36m into a 8 minute short film that tells the story of a 9-year-old boy who takes care of his mentally challenged father. The clip opens with the boy driving down the Los Angeles Freeway, so, not San Francisco :) The "normal" song as a much better rhythm and duration than this video...
To my interpretation the kid is basically part of his own self(innocence, will to live and be happy), you can see how when he falls on the city the people tries to pick him up and no one seems to notice the kid, then the kid reappears and picks him up, at the end he decides to leave that part of himself behind, that is why he is now on the backseat.
