      I mean when you think about it any animal terminology we use doesn't ever apply in pokemon since they don't actually have arachnids in their worlds. If you think about it all the titles for pokemon don't really make sense. Like pokemon being classified by the pokedex as bagworm pokemon since... well there is no such thing as a bagworm in the pokemon universe. Same for arachnids, technically the term doesn't exist in that world, hence why they can take the liberty of making them look different from our world's arachnids.

    I personally think that the Bug-type represents the "Arthropod-type" the same way how there used to be a Bird-type that they then renamed because things fly other than birds. There are things that are Bug-like that aren't just insects: like spiders, isopods, and hermit crabs. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future we get a Bug-type Horseshoe Crab or Sea Monkey. This also explains Shuckle because if Shuckle is based on a Crustacean (a Barnacle) it would be in line with the other crustacean bug types.

    • @catiniya
      @catiniya Год назад +3

      “Bugs” are an actual type of insect too, eg: assassin bug, kissing bug, stink bug. Since the name has been kinda washed out, we call them “true bugs” now. Think of it as calling a bee a butterfly when people say “that fly is a bug”, when that is not the case lol.

    Common misconception about the chrysalis. They aren't actually spun by the caterpillars themselves (those are cocoons). Chrysalises are actually a hard outer shell that caterpillars form under their old bodies which grow and literally bursts out of them. I was always under the impression shuckle was a type of tube worm. He can only be found by the sea (you couldn't go underwater in the second gen so it wouldn't be found in exactly the right place), resides in rocks where a tube worm would be found, and creates a mineral shell that it retreats into when threatened explaining ts high defense.

      Yeah, part of why I'm annoyed by this is because the Bug/Water type is a really cool combination that we've only really seen used to its potential in generation VII (yes, Surskit is gen III, but it wasn't really...using Bug/Water to its potential). Araquanid and Golisopod are really neat Pokemon, and I feel like Krabby, Clauncher, Kingler, or Clawitzer would appreciate having the second type to help them stand out from the plethora of other mono-water types (though Clauncher and Clawitzer already have a degree of uniqueness).

  • @lord_boneman

    I normally think of this as the “Invertebrate” Type. If a Pokémon is not specified to a certain type (Crabrawler in both name and design is Fighting incarnate), and is not mammalian to be Normal, it becomes Bug. Pheromosa is not Fighting enough to be pure, so it gains its Bug or more appropriately Invertebrate typing. That’s also how spiders and other arachnids can join the type. And to explain Drapion; though it is an Invertebrate, its brutal nature makes it more specific to be JUST a “bug.” Finally, my explanation works beautifully for Crustle. These crustaceans are still Invertebrates, but Crabominable is also an Invertebrate, yet is definitely Ice with it living at the top of mountains and Fighting due to being based around boxing and finding tricks to fight to the top, so it’s too specified for the generic Bug. Crustle, on the other hand, only has the crust on its shell, so it’s only partially the type. The Bug is the generic bottom part with no traits to pin it down to something else.

    I've thought about this and I think the type name is supposed to be a pun, things that BUG you, basically a pest type, or an annoyance type. this would make sense with all of the other things that aren't actually bugs; crabs, mold, spiders, etc, those things are annoying, it would also make the type advantage against psychic, because they annoy them and brake their focus and divert mental energy with distractions
