    Fencing is a joke with groundhogs. I know, the critters like my barn. And they have 3 holes going inside the barn. Holes on both sides of the little fenced area we have and by the house. Digging under a fence or wall is not a problem for them.

    Get a cheap electric fence energizer with a little Tshaped push in ground rod and a highly visable single strand polywire and cheap posts. Lasts a lifetime and you can move the energizer around. Leave the polywire around even though it's not electrified , they'll still be afraid of it once it's zapped them. Works for everybody, even feral hogs. I have only needed a single stand and thousands of feet are around 20 dollars usa dollars. I have a strand around my garden, a strand around south side of farm to keep wild hogs out and a strand around fruit orchard. Gallagher brand is the best of the best and the first ever invented. Just make certain you have the polywire never touching any twigs or grass and it is chest height of the pest you need to keep out. Been using it for years never had to kill anything

    Here in Massachusetts, we cannot trap and move any wild animal by law. They're afraid that moving them will spread disease or something. But you can kill them. A trap and a tub of water will do the job - catch rodent, drop trap into water, wait.
    Personally, I didn't have a trap, but the den was under my back porch. During the day, I started 10-12 charcoal briquettes, and dropped them in the hole, and then covered most of the hole with plywood to keep in the fumes. Carbon monoxide did the trick. This year, I have another marauder destroying my garden, but it doesn't den on my property, so I'm going to have to trap and kill it.

    • @whez08
      @whez08 6 лет назад

      I am in MA too and a groundhog is living under my shed and becoming more fearless every day. A live trap is $50-60 and a snap trap that would kill it at the spot is half that price. I'd still rather relocate it myself, but can't find unpopulated place where to release it, since it's house-to-house across all Boston Area. I will figure out how to keep it alive and get rid of it, yet not pay $200+ to a trapper to come catch it.

    • @JonFrumTheFirst
      @JonFrumTheFirst 6 лет назад +1

      whez08 It's against the law to move wildlife in MA - but you can kill them. Get a plastic tote larger than the trap, and fill it with water. Drop in the trap, and walk away. Bag and drop in the trash.

      I am too and they are Conibear body traps. I can't seem to get rid of those little b**t**ds with even ammonia when the smell starts wearing off. It's going to cost me a hell of a lot of money to use ammonia. And like ammonia used cat litter will soon lose it's smell.
      I will be placing my Conibear trap in a bucket and placing it next to the opening under my shed. Of course a nice juicy apple will be used for bait. I will have to drive stakes around it so it can't be moved and also a stake through the ring on the chain of trap. This is the project I've been working on but there has been delays. I live in the city and I don't want to live trap and give this problem to someone else.

I'm sure it wasn't the groundhog's intention to move in with you. His getting in was probably an accident. He was probably creating his den near the foundation of your house and somehow got in. Animal Control is worthless.
      I had a skunk in my yard once and Animal Control put a trap out and caught it, put a blanket soaked in ether over the cage to tranquilize it, and then set it free right in my yard!
      I asked him why he didn't take it away and he said he was afraid the skunk would spray inside his truck.
      I did hire a professional trapper to get rid of some raccoons that were living in my shed and they got the job done by catching 2 baby raccoons in 1 trap and apparently the mother moved on but I'm afraid they might come back and I can't afford to keep hiring the trappers at $700 a pop for every 3 raccoons.
      Now I'm starting to see groundhogs and I think I'm going to start buying my own traps.

Lit a fire in their entrance this morning then covered front with dirt. Neighbors have sealed up property and so they are coming to my property. I poured concrete slab with wire mesh embedded and across grass several feet. They expose the wires every time I cover them up. I suspect they will soon have a tragic ending.

    I have a better idea, LEAVE THEM ALONE! They are harmless little creatures that share the earth with us. Who do we think we are that we can just take a life because "they are nuisances"!

      They are not harmless. They carry rabies. They also chew through the wires coming into your home. They destroy gardens, and even eat flowers. Nothing deters them, you have to kill them.
