  • How does the subtitle service actually work? This week, I'm showing you my subtitling workflow. Let me know what tools you are using in the comments.
    Disclaimer
Please note that the Auto Translate function by RUclips provides translations of very poor quality and I suggest to only use it very sparingly. I always offer people to subtitle the videos into their native language if they want to build up a portfolio. In that case, drop me a message to:

I’ve just started volunteering with TED, working with English and German captions/transcriptions and translating German captions into English. I’m just trying to start in the industry after my BA and I’m really enjoying it so far.

I’ve been subtitling so long that I worked with VHS tapes for years. In my industry, the norm is to charge per minute of runtime, and material with no recording script or transcript costs more. Subtitle Edit has a new transcription feature that works offline, but its accuracy varies wildly.

Two big agencies that offer me subtitling work have their own platforms which use MT as standard. The laborious part is not the MTPE but timing, synching, and sentence length.

Hmm interesting, that doesn't seem too efficient to be honest :)

I love Subtitling and video transcriptions. They are like puzzles 😊.
I learnt to use Ooona when I did a course with UCL on Subtitling, very good tool.

Hello Adrian, I have been a dedicated follower of yours for a long time, and I greatly admire your meaningful and beneficial content. Therefore, I kindly request that you create a video demonstrating how to transfer funds from PayPal to a MasterCard debit card associated with a bank account.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I don't ever do transfers of PayPal to a debit card sorry, I don't think I will be able to make a video on that.

    Thank you for amazing video!
You touched a little bit on why you are not using machine transcriptions.
Is it the same reason why you don’t use machine translations first and edit? Does more efficiency sacrifice the quality of your final product?

Not really, it's rather that it just doesn't work in my case because I mostly work with Swiss German videos. The automatic transcription of Swiss German is not good enough yet.

I want to get into subtitling soooo much. Any tips on how to get first subtitling gigs?

Hi Joanna, if you're a complete beginner, I would start out by doing volunteer work to build a portfolio and get familiarized with the different tools. You can either just do it for yourself to practice or you can offer services for free to people online or organisations. Once you have a portfolio and are familiar with the tools, you can go after clients. I would suggest to start with agencies, look for communication agencies, publishing houses, film studios, ATV agencies and reach out to them directly.

@@Freelanceverse thank you so much! I finished a course on AVT but I felt stuck not having a portfolio of paid translations. I haven't thought of creating one myself! Thank you!

Hi there, I was just wondering, when you get transcription work, how do you receive video files from you clients?

    • @Freelanceverse

usually through secure file transfers like wetransfer, swisstransfer, ftp server or dropbox
