- Rare Oul' Times - Paddy Reilly. Written by Pete St.. John. Recorded 1987 on the show "Encore".
Raised on songs & stories, heroes of re-known
The passing tales & glories that once was Dublin town
The hallowed halls & houses, the haunting childrens' rhymes
That once was Dublin city in the rare ould times
[Chorus:]
Ring a ring a rosie, as the light declines
I remember Dublin city in the rare ould times
My name it is Sean Demspey, as Dublin as can be
Born hard & late in Pimlico, in a house that ceased to be
By trade I was a cooper, lost out to redundancy
Like my house that fell to progress, my trade's a memory
Ring a ring a rosie, as the light declines
I remember Dublin city in the rare ould times
& I courted Peggy Dignan, as pretty as you please
A rogue & a child of Mary, from the rebel liberties
I lost her to a student chap with a skin as black as coal
When he took her off to Birmingham, she took away my soul
[Chorus]
The years have made me bitter, the gargle dims my brain
'Cause Dublin keeps on changing & nothing stays the same
The Pillar & the Met have gone, the Royal long since pulled down
As the great unyielding concrete makes a city of my town
[Chorus]
Fare thee well sweet Anna Liffey, I can no longer stay
& watch the new glass cages, that spring up along the quay
My mind's too full of memories, too old to hear new chimes
I'm part of what was Dublin in the rare ould times.
Ring a ring a rosie, as the light declines
I remember Dublin city in the rare ould times. Видеоклипы
Quanto canti Paddy! Intorno a te si crea una specie di magia!!!!😇😇😇💫😅😍😍😍😘😘🎸🌟🌲⛄
The beauty of this is that it is a quintessentially Dublin song, and yet at the same time it could easily be about any city or town. Its about memories and the passing of time, and so it could be any one of us looking back on our own life and where we grew up.
The legend that is Paddy Reilly .such an amazing singer. Brings tears to my eyes. Dublin..my late mothers city .
He has a heroic voice. Poor old Dublin. Thanks for posting.
The best forever!
PADDY REILLY ABSOLUTE LEGEND !!!
I'm 70 years old and thought I had heard them all until I found RUclips and Paddy Reilly. I have sure enjoyed them all. Thanks for posting!
this ballad struck a deep nerve in my soul; God bless you, Pete St. John. Sad to say, it's the same here in the States. I miss the 'rare ould times' too. I remember the early 60's when the neighborhood was full of kids and dogs ran free. It was fun to play hide and seek at dusk. Sunday was kept 'holy'. Women wore dresses, hats and gloves to church and men suits. It was Mass and Grandma's house. We had to buy gas for the car on Saturday afternoon because after six pm, all the gas stations were closed. You never heard obscenities; you never saw what you see now. Life is much degraded and I can only hope, and pray, sanity and sanctity returns.
God Bless Paddy Reilly and the good ol days
Nobody better then Paddy Reilly
Brilliant voice, and sings every word like it comes from his heart - can't get enough of his recordings.

@dannylavery Danny, funny that you should write a response today. It was today that I found the RTE program on You Tube at Brummy Dubliners site. Glad to see Paddy looking and sounding just fine. Would have loved to have heard him sing though.
@ginnymartin1 He was in an RTE Dubliners special just before christmas
@john261948 John, someone said Paddy is sick, don't know if that is correct, but I pray for him every day. Hope you and others will join in.
