to the muppets who think this is dubbed, you only have to watch paddy on youtube at the 1982 RTE folk festival to realise this guy does not need the technology that makes average singers sound good today. he is the real deal, a golden voice like so many Irish performers
Nonsense. As much as I love and laud my Irish ancestry, I was born and live my life in Scotland. Scots are equally articulate and passionate in expressing our love for country. Ps Paddy is my favourite balladeer and this one of my favourite songs.
Ballbag if you actually listen to this song you will understand that thanks to England The Irish people are spread worldwide and every single wants Irish unity…… As for Scotland yous Wankers constantly pay your taxes to the crown in 2023 I’m Celtic daft but remember it was Scottish settlers who the English depended on in Gerrymandraned certain shit happened… So fuck the Scot’s and up the IRSP/INLA
When I left in '88 this was definately the song of the time for all us emigrants. It said it all. It just shows that folk music is not locked up in the past as many people think..
Sadly, Ireland's greatest export is it's sons. My father was one. England's gain and Ireland's loss. The world is a better place because of this phenomenon.
Sitting here in Tasmania, after a long shift in the hospital. I've been offered the opportunity to become a permanent resident of Australia. Left from Dublin airport last year, don't know when I'll be back. What a beautiful but heartbreaking song.
"Our best asset is our best export too"... That lyric always resonates with me, because it's so true.... Paddy, you're brilliant! Thank you for your amazing rendition of this and so many other amazing ballads.
As being irish and from ireland or for that fact anywhere in the world, i always thought that it is very important that my children learn there irish history like I was taught, ireland is a beautiful country and its sad that pure corrupt governments are running it and dont give a shit about it.
An outstandingly MARVELLOUS performance of a truly WONDERFUL song by the always BRILLIANT and FOREVER GREAT ARTIST PADDY REILLY --- LOVE ❤️ Evelyn O'Connor
If ever a song summed up our plight. This is it. But never beaten. I wish those who were lucky enough not to leave could understand. But unfortunately not
He was one of the best. The folk songs and singers were a large part of the Irish culture that helped shape today's Ireland. The Irish always, and still do, support their traditional music culture.
Love this tune.. sung here 25 years ago. When I was growing up, emigration was ever present, for many out of necessity though when I left in 2003 it was out of choice for new experiences. What I like about this song though is how it encapsulates the multiple feelings of having to leave, the wonder of new places, the confusion as to why we were there in the first place, wondering were we wanted back home, the optimism for the future of the country, the hard work attitude, the pride of successful Irish people, the martyrdom of leaving. Its all very Irish (in that I had all of these feelings myself at some point). The eighties are a different world to the one we live in now though.
I would love to meet paddy or even attend a gig (not to sure if he still gigs, I would guess not) but if I ever did he would be shocked I'm 60 years his junior. I guess he would be more surprised the younger generation still listens to this great music all these years later. .
Listening from Hong Kong. Graduated around the time of the financial crash. Grew up never once thinking I would emigrate, but now knowing I'll never return.
To Elsigo - hope our brother found what he was looking for - job. Ireland is beautiful country and there is no need to hate her. Politicians and bankers it is another story. I had to leave my country too.
We'll be dreaming beneath the Irish stars. We know things will be better once again. All we're missing is the Guinness and the rain. So I switch off my new computer, take a look at Dublin and Belfast Airports and the trains that leave up North, there'll be no youth unemployment anymore ( I hope). So no Brexit, stay in Europe! We're coming back to you again !!
northerntraveller Sadly, Canada has fallen to the New World Order; glad my Irish grandmother is not here to see what has become of her beloved Canada after migrating from her deeply loved Ireland. Paddy Reilly is pure magic with a soul made of pure gold. Carry on beautiful Irishman.
@@jacksinger-hi2uk i left for better opportunities and get some new experiences seeing new parts of the world, almost 4 years later im still in australia and loving life here, i miss home sometimes but ive had the pleasure of giving my family and my wifes family the chance to come here for holidays which they would never be able to do if we wernt living here! just because you love where your from dosnt mean you have to stay there forever, i dont know if youve stuck to the same place your whole life but maybe try something different if you have, you soon realise you aint missing much!
@antoniousf I've seen him live in Detroit and you can't tell the difference between recordings and live as he is that brilliant. Unless you have been there to witness it you wouldn't believe how incredible and consistent he is a true golden voice as you said!

I'm always listening ,the like of these Irish folk singers are few these days, the Fogues a relatively new very young band are well worth listening to
And there are so many really great ones!!

I have said it before...One of Ireland's finest voices. Could listen forever.
Beautiful. Only the Irish can put to song their love for Ireland. No other country in the world can do this, no one.
