Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer: Biggest Threat to World Is Rogue Actors - From Putin to Musk

- When we think about people with incredible control over their institutions and no checks and balances, we often think of classic rogue actors like Russia’s Vladimir Putin. But Ian Bremmer, founder and president of global risk research consultancy Eurasia Group, would also include business leaders like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. They’re not dictators of countries, but they do control, truly control, immensely powerful global platforms that operate with some level of sovereignty outside the power purview of governments. “And I think that the disruptive implications of that for good and for bad are also unprecedented.”
This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live - and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. In my opinion, Ian Bremmer is one of the best global political scientists out there. Few people bring the macro geopolitical analysis he shares. And he shares it in an intelligent but non-academic way. I worked with his people while I was at PwC and have followed him ever since. The analysis is solid, and honest. I also appreciate Ian’s willingness to admit when his initial analysis was incorrect.
Brilliant Ian, you nailed it!
14:22 nice Mean Girls reference was not expecting that haha
I love Ian's excitement. Not sure how people at his level can keep pushing for capitalistic growth in a world of shrinking resources and a melting environment. He probably has a fascinating answer.
Straight from WEF! just so you know he is talking about threat to his “world” not your world or my world, no ordinary persons world. It’s about super rich’s world. and you and I are the crazy uncle to these people.
I haven’t trusted Brenmer for years
Why ???
28:02 Important point about globalization as an ideology i.e. globalism.
As long as you understand, globalism was a euphemism for, privatization.
That was a very interesting discussion indeed and i would like to thank Harvard Business School and HBR for giving many people the opportunity to share their thoughts on that.
The way i see it from an ordinary citizen standpoint is politics have a direct impact on economy, therefore it has a direct impact on peoples lives.
I also have my personal opposition against China because of the pandemic they've created and i hold China responsible for the dilemmas and the loss of many lives around the world , i find the way the Chinese government reacts towards the situation unacceptable at any scale.
On the other hand it is indeed unrealistic to say breaking free from the Chinese global economic cycle would be doable at the meantime but it's not impossible, it will just take some time. But in order to do so there has to be governments and business figures who would be determined to do so as Ian have pointed out.
I also agree that Putin's actions was a result of political hardship with the current administration at the White House and some of the EU leaders , i believe if it wasn't for these so called sanctions on Russia this war we are witnessing today would have never happened in the first place , i understand that Ian advocated for the United States out of patriotism but he also mentioned that Apple for example made a decision based on it's own conclusion regarding doing business with China , therefore i strongly believe that the White House foreign policies doesn't reflect the true will of the majority of the American people.
The White House doesn't have to be involved directly in a fight between the EU and Russia but it can fuel it for sure.
As for the futuristic predictions on whether we're going to see a recession or not , in my humble opinion i think that nobody knows and only time can tell but for some unknown reason to me i feel optimistic.
Besides everything that has been said about Africa is unfortunately correct and the African leaders have only themselves to blame.
Finally i would like to share my opinion on todays business leadership by saying neo-capitalism is way too far from the ethics Adam Smith has implemented, the guy was a genius , he had the ability to see through time as a human being not just as someone who exited in the world of the living.
Because of these unprecedent ideologies and manipulative philosophies business figures act upon today now we are lost in the sauce.
And to be even more frank with you if they don't care i don't care , simply because i'm not a decision maker i'm just sharing my thoughts.
Ghost Citizen.

-- The problem is that 30-50% of the American people are completely M A D, so a true reflection is entirely NOT acceptable.
Andrew Sanford, MBA SUNY Empire State College, I really enjoyed listening to this. I agree rogue actors are a huge risk especially now that they possess powerful tools like disinformation/censorship as well as modern military forces
I mean just seeing what Elon recently did with Twitter and how the Twitter files are impacting everything is a perfect example of the power they can have
Little Gennese River? We're distantly related. Interesting our politics are so opposed. Bremmer was last centrist I trusted. Keep eye on him still but he, and implicitly you, cousin, are wrong about it all.
@@andrewsanford8572 Twitter Files impacting what, exactly. I reckoned it was FBI who aced my account; now we all know it is so.
They are his people. Shame on Ian.
Sam Harris #288 has a discussion with Ian Bremmer and Peter Zeihan. Makes me wanna stick my head in the sand.
🤣🤣🤣
Felt like Ian was gaslighting for a good portion of the interview
And I wonder if those are the parts you disagree with, it is ok to disagree without labeling.
Haha, the biggest risk for nuclear war is the US empire
No, that's not it. What they are not addressing is the "Bretton Wood Accords" and the break down of the "Globalization" we set up after World War II.
