Yea I miss duel gpu setups. Had a radeon r9 295x2 for a while then had 2x r9 fury's.. now I'm sporting the 6900xt and wish crossfire and sli were still a thing.

DX12 and Vulkan APIs expose multi-GPU functionality, but it's now only up to the game developers to come with their own implementations of how to utilize more than one GPU. The times of implicitly managed multi-GPU functionality (by the hardware vendors) is definitely behind us -- it wastes video memory and the AFR sync method between the GPUs runs afoul with modern rendering engines that rely on the data from past frames for many effects. The steady introduction of mixed compute/graphics code in the rendering pipeline also throws a wrench in the old multi-GPU approach.

You TechTubers drilled it in my pretty good back in 2020 that SLI/Crossfire/Multi-GPU was dead so I sold my dual VEGA 56 GPUs then and picked up a RX 6800 XT in its replacement and have no looked back on MGPU.
Its a bygone era to me now. Much like Symmetric Multi-Processing was in the early 2000s with the dual Pentium III boards.

An actual opportunity to use the phrase, "the good old days" and not be 'BS-ing'. I, for one, appreciate this.

I kinda miss this as well, but I kinda like that it evolved into multi-CCD dies, pushing the envelope in another exciting way, relative to the times: efficiency. With power becoming more and more expensive to produce at the scale it needs to be produced at, the multi-processor complex approach has been yielding really interesting results in the different approaches the main players have been taking it.
... but then again, this is like trying to convince the muscle car guy that a hi-po EV is the way to go; no matter the era relative to the technology being discussed, it won't matter if the visceral sensation of one vs the other made all the difference in the world.

I miss my hair too and my favorite dual gpu is the HD7990,which I still have. It's displayed in a case with a few other hardware and such.

It was exciting times. Nvidias titan z at $3000 was crushed by AMDs 295x2 at $1500.
Also those games you tested with that GTX 690 will run a lot better with a HD 7990 since they are DX12 and Vulkan titles

I share your love of GPUs like these.
I think the key to enjoy it is to play games from the era with it, like Crysis 3, Battlefield 3, Tomb Raider 2013, Far Cry 3 etc.
I'd love to build myself a 2012 era PC to keep in the long run as those parts are very affordable right now and will probably start to become more rare in a few years and go up in price. Very nostalgic for that era as it's when I got into PC gaming.

Edit: never mind, you say “from NVidia”. Sorry.
I just tend to disagree with your statement that this card was the last dual GPU. For regular users, this was the last we could get our hands on. For deeper pocket folks, AMD launched the Radeon Pro W6800X dual GPU card for Apple Max Pro systems in 2021, and apparently it beat the RTX 4080 in recent Der8auer tests.

modern GPUs are not mighty, they are trash and relies on upscaling technologies to render acceptable frames. i used to run both 6800GT, 7800GTX and 970 in SLI back in the day

Love dual GPU cards for their shelf appeal. I'd love to get my hands on an NVS 810 which was a dual GPU single slot card meant for large format signage. 8 Mini DP outputs. But sadly it's one of the only GPUs that has ever gone up in value since release.

I miss SLI, despite it being a buggy mess it was still the ultimate flex to have 2 top tier cards in one system that stretched the limits of available power supplies at the time. Got a dual 8800 GTX system I've been working on for laughs...

One of the first things I did when I decided to play with retro PCs was SLi and Crossfire. Currently having some issues in the Crossfire side as I bought NForce boards (Build 1 was on an Asus A8N-SLI Premium and the other was an NForce9a board) playing with GTX260s and 275s. Bought a pair of HD5850's and realized at some point I need a supporting board,, oops.

If you really, really, really want to try this card again, LTT made a video about third party drivers for old gpus to make them more or less compatible with new systems.
I don't remember what was the name exactly but it looked like it could work great.
Else you can find a sweet spot on your wall or maybe maybe it a key ring so you will never lose your keys again

Third party drivers for a GTX 680 won't be enough to utilize a 690 though.
Doubt anyone "wastes" time on trying to keep SLI running. Would be dope if they would but what's the point of it if the games don't support it

    G'day Brian,
WOW! Awesome look back video Brian, this is the reason I am torn about spending money on Dual Die GPUs like this or a HD7990 but had no hesitation getting a Sapphire 7970 & Gigabyte GTX680SOC Windforce5 when they were available at good prices. I don't buy them to sit on a shelf, I enjoy getting them out to play with & the frustration of getting them to work properly or even at all in so many games for that extra performance over the single GPU version would be a real downer.

Miss the old day. i7 920 D0 @4.2 stepping with tri sli gtx 470s. Ran 480x2 + 4870 trifire for a while too. Trifire was such a hassle. Every driver update had to remove the X2 card and install with the single GPU then reinstall the dual GPU. I still miss tf out of those days lol.
