When I was a kid in the 50s, the guy who owned the neighborhood store, used to keep those mugs in the ice cream freezer, and when you ordered a "black cow", he'd pull one out, all nice and frosty, (I thought that was very fancy, at the time!) fill it with root beer, and top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I can still remember sitting on the stool at the soda counter on a summer day, it was such a treat. Your upscale version brings back some happy memories!

I've heard that a "Black Cow" was a variant of a float, but the exact type depended on location. In some places, a black cow was a root beer float, in others it refered to a coke float, and in some places, it was a root beer float with chocolate ice cream.
I'm not from the 50s but I was curious after hearing the Steely Dan song "Black Cow" and did some research.

One of the only indulgences of my poverty-adjacent childhood was a DIY root beer float. Fill a pint glass to 2/3 full of loosely dropped in spoonfuls of store brand French vanilla ice cream, then slowly pour in the A&W root beer to 1" from the rim. Stir, stir, stir and omg nothing like it. Standing in the kitchen, eat/drinking it with the stir spoon, counting fireflies through the screen door.

I just made these but used "Butter Beer". If you have ever been to Harry Potter World in Universal Studies you know they sell Butter Beer as a drink or as a slush. We can buy butter beer here in our large candy stores. The brand is Flying Cauldron. I followed the same process, 1 bottle in the ice cube tray and then added another bottle to the cubes in the blender. I put about 1/2 a scoop of GOOD vanilla ice cream in the bottom of the mug, added the slush then another 1/2 scoop on top. Delicious!. Thanks Chef John!!

    Oh baby comere.
I haven’t done this for way, way too long. Thanks for a great summertime reminder! Must. Have. Now. I just put a spatchcocked turkey breast slathered under its skin with a compound butter so good, sprayed with oil and salted and peppered and with my sides already accomplished.. I’m pooped! That’s all it take for me anymore. LOL a meal!
It was the spatchcocking. Turkey first timer here. Cleaver and hammer and flip press down perfection. But ugh took longer than I’d imagined by the time I’d trimmed up its little riblets etc. Oh besides all the sides, I finally dragged out all my chicken bones skin etc. from a freezer and a super looking gelatinous no salt stock is simmering away. Now to find space in a freezer! SMH at this when I should be in the garden on such a lovely day.
Enjoy your weekend, Chef John! Ice cream headaches are ZERO fun, but I’m game :-)
Off to freeze my Dad’s Old Fashioned.. I think that’s what I have?

In Canada, I have found that the best root beer that I've found for root beer floats is A&W root beer. It goes very good with the vanilla ice cream. If you actually get one at A&W, then they usually serve it in a frosted mug (or at least they used to, before covid, I'm not sure if that changed). Places here aren't allowed to use plastic straws though (or plastic bags, cutlery, ect.) so if you get a straw with it, it will be paper, which really isn't the same, but probably better for the environment. Some people bring their own reusable straws, too. A long time ago I got some of the big A&W mugs, so this will be a good thing to make at home with A&W root beer. I don't think my son has ever had an ice cream float.

If you live in one of the lucky parts of the country that has access to Vernor’s (basically the Midwest or Florida), anything that can be done with root beer can also be done with Vernor’s, to spectacular success.

Perfect timing on this. I just made myself a root beer float with homemade vanilla ice cream. This weekend is a scorcher in my area, so this recipe will be my drink during the heat wave.

    "Easiest Ice Cream float"
I dunno. "Scoop ice cream, pour soda" seems even easier. :P

In the Great Lakes area, we make these, but also love this made with a very strong Ginger Ale.

I just made this and it was awesome! I was too impatient to let my root beer freeze overnight but it was sufficient to let them freeze a few hours, for me anyway, I still managed to get a good slush going on. I’ve always loved a root beer float and this is a great slight variation!

I'm going to try this, John. I remember in the '60s, wour family used to have aluminum glasses I would put orange juice
in it as well as a spoon. Try that for a refeshing drink, maybe some Vodka. Sign me up!

I have a candidate for something better to sip on a hot summer day... Food Wishes' State Fair Lemonade... but man can't live on lemonade alone so this is the perfect alternative !

I was REALLY hoping for a Chef John old school rootbeer recipe to go along with this. Something with actual sassafras! For anyone interested in making their own rootbeer check out Glen and Friends recipe and then go make this!

Back in the good old days when I drank soda and digested dairy; the freeze, or rootbeer cooler was the jack. Just a blended ice cream float. Goodness.
