I Cut My Phone in Half with the Waterjet

- I cut a Samsung Galaxy Right in half to see what's inside and take a closer look at the camera, it was amazing to see all of the tiny individual lens elements and components and how they are made, the parts are so small its pretty mind-blowing.
I'm thinking of making a warped perception episode on how cellphones work, tell me what you think!
P.S I know this has been done before but I also wanted to test my new rigs for 4K Ultra Macro which worked and looked amazing!

If you do an Iphone, you should send it to Louis Rossmann and just tell him it's a water damaged phone.
He would use all the curse words that exist in the dictionary
@@jurestrojan9649 Probably a couple that he'd invent on the spot too.
He will ask his cat Clinton to do a rapport!
Lol.. I watch him actually! I would do it as a prank for sure !
@@WarpedPerception They're pretty rare, but Mark at iPadRehab sometimes shows work he's doing on Samsung phones.
Very interesting! Now I want a water jet!
Thanks ! I told you I was setting things up ! If you need something cut I'm your guy, just let me know!
I love you man !❤️👄
Are you making a new video about "which water jet is best ????"
🙃🙃🙃
Lol... Whoa!
Both of you are are awesome. Collab!
The "vibrator" is an antenna cable.
"i didnt know there was a battery when i cut it" lol
no way
I didn't because it's removable..lol
@@WarpedPerception yeah, i remember those older phones had removable batteries. The cool thing about that was that you could carry extra batteries with you, so if your battery died, instead of recharging, you just put another charged battery in it, and then use that, and charge the other one later. That's good for when you're on the go and dont have access to a charger!!!
Famous last words if he cuts a Tesla EV
@@jorditribo94 you made me laugh! Here: have a like, sir!
This isn't a teardown, its a cut down.
I'll remember this the next time I complain about my phone being too old. have me a deep appreciation of the effort into making one of these things.
Done that once with a band saw and got suspended from school for it
I've seen many Waterjet videos but I haven't seen cuts that clean and you said it was a dirty cut, more please.
The part called out as a vibration motor is a micro-coaxial cable for the antennas. Definitely an impressively clean cut though. I'm impressed that such fine features are so nicely intact without having been frayed by the cutting.
Thanks ! At least I said I wasn't sure..lol. I agree, this water jet is very precise, I went through about two years of back and forth before I decided, I was a little nervous because most of the water jet stuff that I see on RUclips is very rough in comparison.
@@WarpedPerception Thanks for the reply. I'd like to add that the macro slide turned out so perfectly detailed and had me leaning in close to look at the neat details of the camera, battery, circuit boards and other neat things like that battery contact spring that somehow remained intact. So much awesome detail absolutely popped out of that slider shot. I feel like all the electronics nerds here would love to see things like dpss lasers and magnetrons sliced in that kind of detail. (Just be extremely careful about beryllium when dissecting microwaves!)
This Cut looks way better than what the Dudes from the Waterjetchannel are doing!
Love this Clean cut!
Excellent addition to the shop. Your fabricating and testing just leveled up dramatically! 👍 😃
Crazy clean cut. Keep up what you do brother.
I SAWED THIS SMARTPHONE IN HALF
And repaired it, with only Flex Tape™️
That cut was amazing! I couldn't believe how many of the small components stayed put and didn't get ripped out.
If you have any old busted gopros or RC nitro engines sitting around they might be cool to see.
What I'd really like to see cut is the phone line to those people that keep calling about my car warranty. That's a solid gold episode if you can arrange that one. :D
Man those people and those robocallers are crazy... Non-stop calls all day to my phone as well.
The thing on the last lens is just the focus driver.
For image stabilization, normally the entire camera is stabilized/moved. The technology is similar to the actuators on the laser on a CD player, only the feedback comes from a MEMS gyroscope instead of the laser phase interferometry/focus.
The thing that looks like the vibrator could be the microwave antenna cable. It's a thin shielded cable. Routers have them, too.
I'm not amazed about how they cram stuff inside there, I'm amazed how high can they set the prices for so few materials xD And then fill it with bad updates so you need to buy the next one.
Ps: don't try with a new phone, the old IR fingerprint reader was interesting. Today they use capacitive readers. It's just a conductive sheet of metal. But you could have cut this one in more slices!! :-D I would like to see that!
No, really: phone designs are getting simpler. You may get the processor and most components on one chip and then another chip for the sensors, another for the radios, one more for memory and storage, and that's it.
You've been lucky the battery was "dried" up before cutting it xD
You have great points, definitely a different perspective, I mean I guess you can look at it that way too like not very many components. I guess what made me think there's a lot of parts is just so many lens elements and so many battery layers. As for slicing in a more pieces that would have totally been cool..but like I mentioned I didn't know that I was going to even use this video I was just doing it as a test.
However I would still cut a new phone if someone sent it to me..lol.
Sometimes they also move the CCD chip in x-y and the lenses rotate and move in other ways.
@@WarpedPerception I truly loved this video! I, paraphrasing you from the GoPro in tyre video "... I don't think much more will come from" killing a perfectly good phone :-D
I would really watch more slices on this one, though! 😃
Thanks for not reading my comment as a hater xD I really love your videos and your personality!
And congrats on the new water jet cutter!
@@WarpedPerception maybe cutting a real camera lens? You know, the ones used in DSLRs or reflex film cameras?
That is an incredible machine! Such a precise cut without warping the phone.
So clean. Amazing
This video was awesome! I have a new appreciation for my S5. I've been using it 6 years now.
That phone was one of my all-time favorites!
@@WarpedPerception I kinda lied. I'm on my second one. The first was delaminating around the screen from me dropping it. The back cover was chipped away at all corners and the batter finally died in my original at about 5.5 years. I bought a brand new old stock one for 40$ off marketplace. A new battery was going to cost me nearly that, so I said, why not!
That's fascinating seeing all the lenses to focus the image! WOW!
Oh man! This is crazy cool! Never seen a phone this way!
Love your channel bro. You so great vids. Keep em coming plz!
Thank you
Well that looks amazing
The accompanying music following the cut definitely added value to the overall production.
Blew my mind too man! WOW thanks for this, super coooool!
That was crazy impressive!
Amazing beauty & a true work of science, ..those layers. Nice one guys!
You should make a see thru 2 stroke engine
:O just when you thought this channel couldnt get any better, you get a water jet cutter omg!
😊.. thank you, I work very very very hard to make these things happen all day everyday, so I really appreciate that
That cut clean!
Oh yeah. Love your vids!
Sick job bro. Thanks for sharing!
Phone worth one dollar, machine use perhaps several hundred!
Incredible!
Coolest thing I've seen all week
Thank you
This reminds me of waterjet channel too much lol 😂 nice video,it was interesting 👍
Glad you put this on your main channel good stuff
I know I almost posted it somewhere else but decided last minute that it was really good. I've been building a rig for about a year and a half to get those really close macro 8k shots, and I just touched the tip of the iceberg with this one.... They are very very very tough to pull off as you go up on the resolution.
Hes has another Chanel?
Oh i find it its warped perception x
@@viliuspocius438 He also has Matt's world
Wow.. that water jet does such an amazing cutting job. I'm well impressed with it. And that stack of lenses for the camera. Who would have believed there were so many. My best guess would have been 3!
Thanks for cutting your phone in half for us!
I was totally surprised by the camera, I had no idea there was so many lenses inside of there, I thought that was pretty crazy.
Wow this is awesome
Thank you
WOW THATS AMAZING
Wow!! Great video
This is REALLY cool! None of the internal components are mangled, just a neat clean cut. I'd love to see more cross sections.
I was very impressed by the quality of the cut as well, even the smallest components were not damaged, next time I will go more delicately..
Awesome !
Holy shit! That's what I call precise... Wow
Nice one! Did not expect the lens elements to stay in place.
They are firmly glued to the camera frame so people can drop their phones xD
Yeah but I think he/she means the actual lens elements inside of the camera. but you may be right they may be glued in place and then the whole assembly moves for the stabilization.. but I'm not 100% sure that this one has stabilization.
@@WarpedPerception they need to be glued, the slightest misalignment would kill the camera or at least kill the frame focusing :D
It seems that the *only* part that would have needed a slower cut speed was the camera lens. Everything else seems to cut very nicely even with this cutting speed.
That's very nice water jet indeed.
That's really interesting.... thank you
I got satisfied with this, u never dissapoint,, love from Africa
Wow that little water jet is awesome! I got super excited then saw the $24,000 price tag lol, technology is awesome and thanks for showing us this!
Awesome! I like the way you think. :)
Hey was supra impressed
Way cool👍🏻
"I didn't know there was a battery in the phone"
O_o wut?
They are removable

I was like wait who, had go back few times, then I was like did he really say Linus as Leenus lmfao!
This video could be the concept for an entire channel
I JUST SAWED THIS PHONE IN HALF TO SHOW THE STRENGTH OF FLEX SEAL 😂😂
Awesome, more things it's possible ? There is very interesting for experiments
To show you the power of Flextape... 0:09 I....
Can you please do a vid of see through Briggs and Stratton vs nitrous? (Blowing the see through engine on nitrous)
Hi-Speed camera next!
Amazing to see that..also cut the catalytic converter of automatic transmission 😎
Awesome well done.WP.👍🇬🇧🤘🍺
Hello love your video, i have a question where is the video about see through diesel engine 🤔😊😁 i want to see diesel engine run with a clear plastic plzz
His diesel is an over head valve and even if he had a flat head i think the combustion pressure might be too high for plastics that could still offer a clear view of the combustion
Well I was actually waiting to get this water jet, I have a lot of very intricate parts that I need to make for that but I am working on it...
Well I am working on it but I don't want to give out any details just yet... I was waiting on the water jet to arrive for a while now because for the see-through diesel I need some machine some very intricate parts with precision.
Would be great to see you do some lapping for things like this. Pretty incredible how cheap you can buy or build a slow/variable speed wet
lapping machine.
Honestly it’s just as satisfying and easy to do it by hand. If you had lapped those surfaces after cutting… I can’t imagine how beautiful that would’ve looked! Definitely possible some of the pieces may have fallen out or been wrecked… But you could always stabilize everything with epoxy or super glue....and once hardened… lap everything flush until it is flat and polished.
Maybe something like 120, 320, 600, 1200 grits, (all wet sanding of course) and then go to a buffing compound on a piece of mdf or something hard and stable like that… just porous enough to hold the lapping/polishing paste. But hard enough so it doesn’t distort or curve up around the edges or small cavities. Even a piece of plain white computer paper on a piece of glass would work to do the final lapping and polishing with paste.
Off brand Diamond lapping paste is extremely cheap from China… You can get into submicron sizes. The finest grit I use in my shop is 0.25 micron. I know it’s something around 60,000 grit, which is pretty accurate because I’ve compared it with a known high end brand name Abrasive under The microscope. So that cheap diamond paste is a godsend! And pretty good stuff for the money.
Sorry to ramble on… My point is ....you could get incredible cross-section shots with a wet diamond lapping setup. Probably well under $100
And if you haven’t seen them… Google the microscope cutaway/cross-section photographs of cut/lapped electronic components. It will blow your mind. The guy who did all of those is a real artist!
That was interesting a bit surprised the battery did not get angry
You should all get together with Fireball tool as he does incredibly stuff with his 5 Axis water jet
I'm going to check that out.
You always post an interesting video. Thanks for doing what you do to entertain us.
Thank you !
Waiting for waterjet channel to come play😂
Cool! :)
Dope
Great👌
Cool, love that you can see the battery swelled out in the middle, is that what killed the phone?
No I think the battery was already bad but in this particular phone it's removable, that was totally cool to see though
I think cutting it with a water jet was what killed this phone
I don’t think someone who didn’t think the phone had a battery in it should be giving us a breakdown of the parts inside. The coil above the bottom lens element will be the auto focus adjuster.
It's removable, this particular phone was on my exhibit shelf.... However I do know how to read and I have Google so that makes me qualified on the internet..LOl
Thank you, cool
Minus that stupid charging port, that s5 is one of the best cell phone designs ever.
Realitatea este foarte bine prezentata de Mihai , treziti-va...
That would be the perfect use for an iPhone hahahaha. Indeed a cell phone is pretty well packed with parts. Not much empty space at all.
No empty space
At 3:05 you mention about fingerprint scanner but actually it's a blood oxygen level and heart rate sensor !
top to da bottom now we here ...
The Waterjet Channel is calling shenanigans!!
I'm from the ghetto I don't know what shenanigans are..lbvs.
That was pretty damm cool! I'm surprised the battery didn't go up in flames. Usually lithium doesn't like oxygen very much
I agree, since this phone has a removable battery and I grabbed it from my exhibits shelf as a sacrifice I truly did not know there was a battery in there.
I'd argue that lithium likes oxygen a whole lot.
Anyhow, on the one hand, this was such a clean cut that all of the anodes and cathodes stayed cleanly apart. On the other hand, li-ion batteries tend to just combust when exposed to air.
I expected fire, but maybe the battery was already depleted and ended up water quenched when it wanted to get hot. Waterjetchannel recently cut apart a well charged high power flashlight without incident and that defied expectations as well.
3:49 that's antenna cable
How much PSI is that thing? Awesome video bro!
Anddd that's how you make them fold😂
3:50 this is coaxial cable from the bottom dock board.
More!
Processor then under a digital microscope. Different typs of balls, softball, baseball, gumball, gulf ball etc. An agate or other rocks. So many opportunities lol
Leeenus tech tips to the rescue
👍
To test the power of flex tape I sawed my phone in half
When they said the s5 was water proof I don’t think they were going at it like this
Please please please use a super slow-mo camera and shoot a close-up of the tip of the water
jet in action.
I like ya cut, W
how come the li-po battery didnt catch fire when exposed to oxygen?
I have an idea for you to do you do all these crazy things with cameras see if you can get a housing that would fit a camera inside of a working dog box or transfer case peace out dude I keep making videos✌
After fire he will play with water.. Pretty excited
Could you cut slices off a phone and take pictures every time? When you overlay the images, could you get something like a 3D scan of the phone like an mri in a hospital?
If you cut ice with water jet, will it be melted before cutting it?
What you thought was the vibrator is either the antenna/wifi/bluetooth connector. The vibrator is about the size of your pinky finger nail. Usually at least
POV: You were told your phone was waterproof.
I wouldnt be surprised if that battery was on the edge of catching fire / exploding while being cut with the water. The water probably was putting out the fire in realtime haha! Lithium batteries , with the exception of Life, absolutely hate any sort of abuse whether electrically or physically. I dont know if the battery was ballooned prior to this cutting but if not ... that ballooning probably happened while being cut =P
Cooooooooooooooolllllll
Hehe .. pretty cool
