I think it's the way we are raised. Our parents force us to clean our plates no matter what, even if we're full or just not hungry. And we wonder why we grow up with an eating disorder and overeat, and feel we have to clean the plate no matter what.

Staying in ketosis is what brought me control with overeating! I would rather other things worked but it took ketosis to tame my carb cravings. Now I only get hungry 1 or 2 times per day. Fasting plus ketosis makes losing fat and controlling appetite work. Not in and out of ketosis. That makes me hungry, irritable, and depressed.
But staying in ketosis - that is what it took. It is worth it.

I always appreciate Dr Bergs compassionate tone. Though he sees people eating in a way that perpetuates health problems, he explains the biology of why its a vicious cycle people need to understand rather than ridiculing them. He knows there are years of overstimulating foods, enticing sugars marketing of big companies as well as our own natural taste bud tendencies that have been hijacked. Thank you for patiently , thoroughly and persistently educating us so we can break free.

I’ve read it’s best to stop eating when you are still just a tiny bit hungry. You have to leave room for proper digestion, it makes sense to me. One big thing that’s helped me is making a conscious effort to chew my food until there is no chunks, completely liquified. This forced me to slow down and it’s helped my digestive system tremendously. I also try to time my meals by the circadian rhythm, we produce our most digestive juices when the sun is out. More digestive juices means less undigested food in my body…I will take all the help I can get.

I was taught at a young age my stomach was no larger than two fists put together, and not to stretch it out of shape. Still, it's easy to overeat calorie wise if you don't feel full. Eating enough fat to satiate is so important and cutting out simple carbs that breakdown into sugar to keep that nasty hunger hormone away-ghrelin is essential for battling cravings. Thanks for your free videos.

That is absolutely correct, Dr Berg. In Deepak Chopra's "Just Listen! Your body is speaking to you" (can't quite remember if it was a book or an article, I jotted it down in 2010), one can read: (COPY/PASTE)
Let's say your body doesn't feel like your guide and friend. Why not? It's not because you gained weight, fallen out of shape or are depressed... It is Lack Of Awareness. Awareness has tremendous power. (Hence Conscious Eating.) It tunes into every cell. Awareness is invisible. It lets my body know what my mind is thinking. I become aware of my thoughts and it also sends feed-backs from the body..
The body sends signals. Every cell of the body follows those signals perfectly. If you are not paying attention to the signals, you are working against the flow of nature, which is the Flow Of Life. When Mind-Spirit-Body are in Harmony = Happiness is a natural state. You feel good.
Discomfort, pain, depression, anxiety are disharmony. = Feeling UNHAPPINESS is thus a form of feedback. Treat it like an indication, don't get mad at yourself for feeling "bad". It simply signals that disharmony has entered somewhere: either in the mind or body. (Since form follows thought, it is more likely the mind..) It simply means: AWARENESS HAS BECOME DISCONNECTED.
Only when you look at your situation this Holistic Way is when we can link Health to Wholeness and Holiness. For all three share the same root word and all three share the states of harmony and disharmony. They have a correlate in the brain and through the nervous system the brain makes every cell Aware that you have an issue...
With other words, your entire body-mind field is responding to every single pain or pleasure! The body-mind field IS Aware. You have to consciously pay attention to it, to what your body is telling you - by feeling it, thus Awareness will arise. This Awareness is silent & intuitive. Simply by paying attention, it infiltrates every corner of the field. .... but the opposite is also true. When you withdraw Awareness, disruptions occur. The Feedback loops no longer operate as they should = thus the flow of energy needed by every cell, begins to diminish. Your body becomes more like a neglected child = being ignored when it cries. You must re-connect with it again. (...but gosh humans are so used to that 'numb' state.. with the question being: WHY did you want to be sedated the first place?)
Basically, good digestion rules the world! That's my conclusion. It's also in the Book: Supreme Personality by Delmer Eugene Croft.
    EXERCISE:
    1. The next time you are looking for food or are tempted to overeat, focus on what your body is saying, ask: How do I feel at this moment? Either you are truly hungry or you feel something you don't want to feel (in yr mind) and by eating, you are suppressing that particular discomfort. So now, PAUSE before you reach. See how you'll feel (surely gonna get anxious) but tell your mind that you CAN have that food afterwards. In that Allowing, your wanting will loosen..... then just go ahead and proceed as you wish: follow that impulse to either eat or just turn around and start doing something if you can resist the craving. BOTH are good because now you are doing it AWARE. This realization will add another dimension to your action.
Keep doing this every single time when you feel like munching on something. (It is usually while watching RUclips lately... ppl kind of, sort of just sit there 'doing nothing' and automatically want to grab something to eat. We can possibly call it, eating out of boredom.)
    2. The second part of the exercise is when you actually start writing down that specific feeling, - just like DR BERG says. Next time you feel cravings, don't just PAUSE but grab your Notebook and be as specific as you can be by describing it, (yes it is very confronting, don't ask...) but keep answering the question: WHAT DO I FEEL AT THIS MOMENT? Jot down all the anger, anxiousness, scarcity, emptiness... then again, proceed as you wish: either follow the impulse to eat or just turn and start doing something..
    3. The third step is, (when you get tempted again) to PAUSE again when you sat & wrote down your feelings, now, go inward and just BE with the uncomfortable feeling. Just sit there. Tell yourself; for one whole minute I'm gonna just sit here (instead of grabbing some food right away). That PAUSE is going to give you all kinds of mixed up emotions. You're gonna be even longing for a hug, because you'll realize it's not really food that you want, so ask the next question: WHAT AM I TRULY HUNGRY FOR? ... then again proceed as you wish, either follow the impulse to eat or just turn and start doing something. (You'll notice that each time you get further and further, mastering your skill of BEING AWARE = MINDFUL.)
    4. The fourth step is to SERVE YOUR FEELINGS OF PAIN, DISCOMFORT, DEPRESSION THE RIGHT WAY. Instead of Self-Medicating through food, you can now follow the appropriate channels. This could simply mean: carrying out a task that you've been avoiding (in my case it was some paperwork and every time I got myself so far to actually DO it, I just made myself a meal... I really didn't see how I could complete that task so I just avoided it for as long as I could), or as serious as checking yourself into a clinic or going to see a therapist.
    RESULT:
The idea is that if you keep doing the exercise, - either all 4 steps at once or just one by one each time - until one day, you'll be able to just STAY AWARE of your feelings but NOT FALL FOR THE EMOTION. You will not lose sight of your thoughts, you will stay connected. You become more like a witness who 'watches' every thought rise and fall. In many many cases, it is just one particular thing we try to keep away from (like in my case) and once that task is completed, the actual craving dissipates automatically. It really won't be "hard" to "not eat" after that, because you solved the issue of WHY you have been (over)eating the first place. In other cases, it can be someone you have issues with or miss, angry at, try to avoid, or don't want confrontation but it's gonna happen anyway, feeling of self-blame and you punish yourself with food or as simple as being scared of being hungry... etc.. Sometimes it takes some what more action, more realization or time to remove the obstacle that kept you captive. GOOD LUCK. - I send love to everyone, STELL' xx..
EDIT: I see at the end of my notes: Deepak Chopra: Re-inventing The Body, Resurrecting The Soul and The Ultimate Happiness Prescription. X

I've been overeating and I feel sick. It's hard for me to find a balance. Sometimes I go three days without eating at all, other times I stuff myself like crazy with any pleasurable food I can find. I hate it.

I’ve just started my weight loss journey on RUclips and I have a lot of weight to lose ( embarrassingly so ) so I have been watching dr bergs videos a lot instead of over eating :) I’m trying to do IF but struggling - but I do feel so much better before I eat then when I finish over eating that is for sure.... I have to start getting rid of carbs out of my diet, but carbs are so hard to give up ( excuses excuses I know ) .... I am definitely not conscious eating like you are describing Dr. Berg and yes my most difficult time is at night - so my eating window needs to be at night and fast longer ..... ok, I’m going to put this information you have shown me tonight into practise .... I definitely relate to the inflammation .... when I detox I’m not in half as much pain as when I am over eating that is for sure .....

Hey Dr. Berg, would you consider doing a video on portion sizes or portion control? I think the reason most people over eat is because we as a nation have this false concept of how big our meals should be... I myself am guilty of this most of the time lol

  • @CourtneyCoulson

I've never eaten to the point where I felt sick, but when I started fasting I would load up on more food than I probably needed because I didn't realise that I could last a long time on just one plate. Sometimes I don't even eat to the point of complete fullness and I go 20 or so hours before needing another meal. It's pretty great.

@@jlsx3347 Good morning! I drove a big truck all over the U.S. for 20+ years. In 12-14 I drove 600 miles & don't remember any of it. No recall of most of the rest of my trip into TX & back to IN. All tests showed no signs of stroke, dementia or Alzheimer's. In 4-15, the Neurologist said I'd had a Transient Global Amnesia attack. He couldn't explain why I never fully came out of it, said I'd likely have more & I did.
I had periods of just sitting in a chair, staring at nothing, not thinking. I lost a great deal of my memory to a point I couldn't spell, count, make sense of anything I heard or read, grandkids' names, etc. Nobody knew what was happening to me or why, yet they wanted to prescribe medicine, all with death as a side effect. I can't even take OTC meds due to severe reactions. When I refused the meds, they wouldn't 'help' me until I did. I knew that I'd die if I did.
THEN I was led to Dr. Berg in the Fall of 2017! Since I couldn't cook anymore, I replaced my few spoons of peanut butter as my only food with his shake. I felt better & eventually began to teach myself to spell, read, count, etc. I heard him talk about his Keto/IF program about May 2018. I couldn't understand most of it, so just ate veggies & kept improving.
I'm on my way, yet still large gaps in memory. I'm SO very grateful for the Doc's teachings and my instinct to follow as best I could! I think I'm close to where I'll be able to learn a new skill & earn a living again. My brain still doesn't function as it once did, but I'm a far cry from just staring into space for days on end & only eating a few spoons of peanut butter a day! I'm truly blessed!! I pray that you be truly blessed, as well!!

    • @drearoach
      @drearoach 5 лет назад +1

He still recommends not eating several hours before bed. I think he just sees that many people still have the most trouble with hunger and snacking in the evening, so if your trying to do intermittent fasting....if you have your small eating window in the evening, you will still get the benefit of the longer fast. I find this helpful because I still get hungry and have the greatest desire to snack in the evening....wether I eat lunch or not. So as he suggests for those of us with these tendencies, now I try and just not eat until between 5 and 7 pm...and eat a proper meal.

In short... the better I take care of myself, the better and longer I will be able to take care of others and need less help myself as I age. I want my choices to help me take care of others not need more people to take care of me in the future. What we do or don’t do effects other people. The less I need from others, the more I can be a giver to others. The greater good. Hope that helps.

The list of bad chemicals would take you at least a week or more to read!! Many of the ingredients aren't even required to be listed on the container!! I use coconut oil as a total body moisturizer and deodorant. This oil doesn't allow bacteria to grow, so no body odor! I never use perfume, but I know some people who use an essential oil mixed with a light oil to make perfume. Dr. Bronner's has a variety of concentrated pure soaps that can be used for MANY things. I'm a big fan of multipurpose products. I have one bottle that can be used to wash hair, bodies, dishes, floors, laundry, the dog and just about anything else that needs to be cleaned. Some people even spray it on their plants to deter bugs! He also has a citrus rinse for the hair after washing it. They are available online and in most health food stores. The price for these products may seem expensive, BUT they are highly concentrated (so will last a long time), have been around since 1858 and proven to be effective. A company doesn't stay around for 150 years without their products doing what they say they do!!

This video was me for my whole life. Now that I’m on Keto and IF, I have the opposite problem. My appetite is so low, and my tolerance for eating is so low, that I can’t eat enough veggies and protein to get my nutrients. I eat a few bites, and I’m done. How am I going to get enough potassium that way? I can never hit 4700 mg per day. That’s a LOT of greens.
