Calculating Discounts, Tax, Tips, and Original Price on the ASVAB and PiCAT (10 Practice Questions)
HTML-код

- In this video, I discuss how to calculate discounts, tax, and tips, and in addition, I also work out problems in which you must determine the original price of an item, given the sales price or tax price of that item. In order to do well on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) or Pre-screening internet-delivered Computer Adaptive Test (PiCAT), you must be comfortable solving problems that are similar to the ones in this video. To get the most from this video, you'll want to pause the video after I read a practice test question, attempt to work out the practice test question on your own, and then resume playing the video to check your solution.
Since you are not permitted to use a calculator on the ASVAB, you must be comfortable working with decimals as well as performing long division by hand to perform the calculations on the ASVAB and PiCAT. If those are topics with which you struggle, you may want to watch the following videos first:

I’m studying for my asvab using this. My recruiter actually sent me the link to your channel for study material. It’s been almost 6 years since I’ve done actual math other than just simple everyday stuff. The comments on your videos and the way you can explain stuff is amazing. I have a great amount of trust that this will help me out! I scored a 50 on the pre test but I’m hoping to get that higher. The 50 was without any studying whatsoever after almost 6 years like I said.
I got a 51 on the practice asvab a few years back, and likewise. But I love numbers & processes so this will be a cakewalk in a couple weeks but it’s like anything else, more reps, more better!
If you got a 50 without studying, you should easily be able to get a 75+ with studying. Good luck!
@@GrammarHero I sure hope so lol. I’m going into the Air Force to work on jet engines. I’ve never been great at math. But I have strong reading comprehension skills. Math has always been kind of lacking for me a little.
@@auusstin8404 If you work through the videos in my free ASVAB/PiCAT Math Boot Camp, you'll become an expert at solving basic math questions.

@@auusstin8404 that’s sounds awesome bro I’m joining the army 11b infantry or at least trying to I got a 41 on practice avsab then got a 25 on the PICAT so I gotta study alittle more
thanks gh. glad someone can teach this topic right.
I just want to say thank you very much for making these videos I'm going to enlist in the military in a few months and I bought this book online but I couldn't understand the math problems of it because I haven't been in school in a few years so just listening to you explain these was a big help!
I’m glad to hear that, and good luck!
I can not thank you enough!! I tried tutors and they didn’t work for me! The first time I took my ASVAB I scored a 15 .. I locked in with your channel for 2 weeks really grasping the basic concepts, pausing the video before you worked out the problems and just recently went up to a 42!! Anybody can do it you just have to put in the work! You really are a gem thank you for all of your helpful videos and everything you do!! Enlisting into the military soon
Congrats, and I wish you the best if you join the military!
@@GrammarHero thank you!!
You're welcome, and good luck!
what videos did you watch that helped
@@raisethestorm3655 the math boot camp playlist , watch videos you know you struggle with first then the ones thats easier towards the end try to remember basic formulas not question formats really understand how to set them up.. even if you don’t know how to do a problem completely still pause the video before he works it out just to see if you set it up right .. study for 1 hour and take a 10-15 minute brain break then right back to it that’s what helped me the most if you have access to a library use it it’ll help a TON with staying focused! You got this!! 💪🏽 if you have other questions just lmk. his videos are beyond helpful you just have to put in the time

Thank you so much @GrammerHero. I had my CFAT today which is an equivalent of the ASVAB in Canada and I must say that even though I do not like math and I haven't practiced one without calculator in years, studying your playlist over and over again helped me to get idea on how to do many calculations. I still made many gambles but atleast what I gained from your lectures helped to narrow down the choices lol. You are not told your score because it consists of other areas than problem solving but I passed. Thank you so much for this selfless service to everyone.
Congrats, and I wish you the best if you join the Canadian armed forces!
@GrammarHero Thanks alot. Oh you bet I will join, I didn't come all this way to drop out half way😀.
Honestly your a life saver.and cant thank you enough🙌it took how many times to understand the math but aye shit i think im ready for the test💯
Good luck!
I'm learning more in half an hour of your videos than I am in a whole day of school. It's so stupid the amount of useless things we are taught in school, thank you for the amount of effort you put into these videos.
You're welcome! Honestly, the hardest part of making my RUclips videos is condensing a topic. which may take a week to cover in school, into a 30-minute video.
Thank you so much for these videos. So helpful
You're welcome, and good luck!
This is really good and helpful, thank you.
You're welcome, and good luck!
This is what I needed
If you haven't done this in a while, you may want to watch me work out the first practice question, and then you attempt to work out the second one on your own. Either way, after one or two problems, this should be very easy (apart from doing all of the work with decimals)!
Grammar hero, I took my ASVAB today. I think I did well but I haven’t gotten my score yet. I thought of you and how much I’ve improved by studying all your videos. I’ll update you later on the score I got! Thank you.
Thanks for letting me know, and I hope you got the score you wanted!
@@GrammarHero I just got my score. The first practice test I took, I got a whopping 19 with no studying whatsoever. The second practice test I improved by 11 points, barely a 31 which is the qualifying score to enlist. I have studied mainly all your videos along with Colfax Math. I passed today with a 41 but it was not the score I wanted. Regardless, I’ll take it and fly! Math is just not my subject. As a result, I never want to see the letters X and Y again! I’m moving forward though because of you. You are a phenomenal teacher that breaks down the problem so easily. Honestly, I’m surprised you do all of this on RUclips for free considering how expensive everything is nowadays. When you go to bed tonight, just know you are very much appreciated. Sending you love from Miami, Florida. Thank you!
@@NicoleBermz Going from a 19 to a 41 is very, very impressive! You're welcome, and I wish you the best if you join the military!
How come with some questions you go by the 3-step procedure you explained, but then with some other problems you do the sp=p-dxp formula? In some problems, I do the 3-step procedure way and still get the same answer? Is that a bad thing and should I differentiate the two?
I think Grammar Hero should be nominated for a Homeland Security defense Medal because of the amount of people who benefit from his free of charge material (ASVAB/Study guides) in joining the military.
I appreciate that, but most of this math is very basic stuff (i.e., basic middle school and freshman-level high school). If you buy a study guide from Amazon or a book store, you'll get very similar stuff. The only difference between a book and my content is that I can talk you through the challenging stuff; a book can't.
I have been getting 70% on your practice tests. Do you think that's enough to ensure a GT of 110 or higher?
Thank you for your content!
Based on that, you SHOULD score well on the real ASVAB, but as you can probably imagine, I really can't give you a definitive "yes" or "no" about your GT score.
The only way to find out is to take the real test.
Good luck!
if your goal is a high GT focus on word knowledge. Thats like 70% of GT later aritmetic reasoning.
How do you know when to multiple or divide or add or subtract or do fractions during word problems?
The more you practice, the easier that should become! Of course, I have a playlist that has everything you need to know about fractions here: ruclips.net/p/PLhlU-GzAQeG3rQjliSl-ThN_L2lF1iABE
Good luck!
@@GrammarHero thank you
Mike’s motorcycle stalled at the beach and he called the towing company. They charged him $4.75
per mile for the first 25
miles and then $5.25
per mile for each mile over 25
. Mike was 29
miles from the motorcycle repair shop. How much was Mike’s towing bill?
Where is this question from?
I have a question. I want to become an officer and i need a GT score of 110. I know you have every study guide on math. Is there a specific one where I should focus on when it comes to arithmetic reasoning? Like if you were going to study arithmetic reasoning only, what guide should i be focusing on more if you know what I mean? Thank you and have a bless day!!
If you're good at math already, you can just work through my Math Boot Camp playlist. Otherwise, you'll want to spend time relearning the basics. Good luck!
@@GrammarHero if I want to learn everything, is it best to use the link to the checklist and go from top to bottom? If I do that do I go straight to the practice test with the other link? If it makes any sense? Thank you sir!!
why did you subtract the sales tax for the computer problem but add the tax for the jeans problem shouldn't you have subtracted too
The computer problem involves a discount, and the jeans problem involves tax. You subtract discounts, and you add tax.
Could you do a discount, tax and tip question with a “buy one get one 50% off” I got a question like that on my practice test and am unsure how to solve it.
Thank you!
What did you have to calculate? The total of both items?
@@GrammarHero yes, that is correct. I apologize I don’t have the original problem, it was a practice PiCAT question.
@@Laxis18 I'll see what I can do. I'm making a few videos right now and will try to include it.
@@GrammarHero thank you so much! And for such a timely response. I’ve been studying to take my official PiCAT next month, and I’ve been watching your videos since the beginning of this month every single day doing something different.
Thank you so much for helping us out! I’ve never been good at math and your videos help ease my test and math anxiety

Do you offer tutoring?
Unfortunately, I don’t. Everything you need to pass the test is posted on my channel and website for free!
Do you really prefer we learn the original price ? It’s kinda …
That's your choice. Doing long division with decimals, which is required for finding original price, is harder than multiplying decimals for a lot of people. You will almost certainly have to divide decimals at some point on your test, though.
any recommendations on what math i should study i plan on taking test again mid November i got 11 first time and just took practice test recruiter and got 39 but if you have any recommendations on what i should study it will be very helpful
