I always recommend grabbing a flight stick to anyone that's been bitten by the X4 bug.
ED's combat doesn't really compare. One of my favorite engagements was saving a recently purchased, at the time anyway, L-gas miner from an I-destroyer reeking havoc in the Void. Only had 10 S and M ships close enough to intercept in time. I set half to attack my target and the other half to defend me, and believe it or not, we actually bought the miner enough time to get its travel drives online without a single casualty.
I always tell people to not be afraid of losing ships and to write them down, your loses are often times more interesting than your victories. Looking at my notes I almost forgot about the "Defeat at Family Nhuut". I'd haphazardly tried to reclaim the sector from the Xenon, as the tip of the spear targeted their shipyard, I'd two destroyers rendezvous in the rear. When I was ready to integrate them into the main attack a K had already flanked them. Hastily i took command of one as the K delivered the deathblow to the Behemoth and began to slowly rotating its main battery into range. After my weapons over heated I charge it at full speed to buy more time, and while this dance was going swimmingly, my main attack force is being flanked by Ks and Is causing them to flee into the Shipyards defenses. Long story short; this lead to a full retreat and I had to refocus my approach to a containment strategy while I rebuilt my forces for a second push that eventually reclaimed all the lost sectors and claimed my new main base of operations in Family Zhin.
What's cool is either of these could easily be dramatized into the highs and lows of a larger story but they can just organically happen to anyone in X4 or you can just sit in an elevator on a station staring at the map if you so choose.
Heroes of the Defeat at Family Nhuut:
*MQT-069* Valiantly sacrificed themselves to aid in the retreat
IUC-104(GO) Valiantly sacrificed themselves to aid in the retreat
    VQK-127
    SPD-621

    MLS-137

Last night was my favorite run playing. I started up a new save (cheated a bit but cmon it's MY game lol) with a ray destroyer with 4 fighters. We ran to the xenon near heretics end, a zya auxiliary ship was getting hammered by 10 f and an I was closing in fast. Spooled up our drive to intercept the I. My fighters went to defend the ship from the other fighters, giving it's turrets the chance to effectively defend. I placed myself in between the aux and the I ready for an intense battle to at least stall the I. The I tried to go around me to get to the aux ( must of been commited) so we moved to intercept. Again right as I reach range again slowing the I I hear the travel drive of the aux ship spooling. My fighters did it! They were comming to assist against the I. So I commanded them to take care of the turrets ( as the tavel drive for split take forever to actually start) they start taking damage and yet faithfully hammering it's defenses. After loosing all my fighters the I was prepared to use it's remaining turrets to try to obliterate me. But I've been using the rays forward beam and L turrets to hammer the I from a safe enough distance. But its closing the distance and fast. I desperately try to slow it by shooting at it's engines to no avail ( I'm not at a good angle) but I've managed to smash thier shield generator instead. Guess nothing else than to commit or run as the aux ship was finally moving away. My fighters were obliterated they fought bravely though ( and surprisingly smart for the ai being dumb) and i couldn't let that slide. So I made the bold move to do a broadside pass of the I my fighters took out a majority of turrets on it's right side. So I turn and turn hard, I pass by the I taking decent shield damage but my hull is in tact and shields are still holding for now. So I shut the engines off and 360 and take a well timed shot to thier engine making them dead in the water. I circle them like a shark in the water. I want to "look them in the eye) as I fire everything. The Is hull cracked under the pressure, hull breaches, fires broke out on the I as it took more of a beating. Blue spheres of energy smashing into and now through the Hull of the I. It's chain reaction started, as the core destabilized. ( i don't have a flight stick but the cool things that happen sometimes make the game feel more authentic) the way the yak pulled off slowly as though worried or thanking me for the rescue despite the -10 faction relation.

X4 Foundations in my opinion is the best and ultimate space simulation game to date. It has a very steep learning curve. For the casual player that just want a quick pew pew pew session this might be a letdown as it will take many hours to get to know all the mechanics of the game and the beginning of the game is a bit of a grind. I think the expansion Timelines attempted to solve this problem, I don't think it succeeded if it was the goal of the expansion. However, there are multiple tutorials that the game provides to assist you. If you enjoy space simulation games, strategy, tactics, economy, ship and station building, empire building, aliens, epic space battles, exploration etc. (Not possible to explain everything) you cannot pass up on this one. In conclusion X4 Foundations is the best space simulation game to date the con is that you will need to invest at least 100 hours in the game to be able to say whether it is for you or not. Egosoft has a passion for their product, they care for their customers, and it shows!

Is there leeway to do like a pacifist Syarfleet option? Where you just build, fly and explore?

No need to fight wars if you don't want to. But even playing as a pacifist, pretty much all economic activities have military hardware as an end result.

To be fair... there are quite a few mods that can turn it into a new pew fest lol. I've got the boron wepon extension mod and a few others. The base turrets i think lack good fire rate. These added wepons fix that. Adds a few for main wepons on s and m ships too. Vanilla game is still awesome but the idea isn't to be the "hero ship" yeah, which i don't mind either.

@Vagran without mods yes and no.. depending on your game start you will have factions that like you and some that will hate you. MOST factions you can attempt to make friends with ( it's not easy trying to kill wanted people comming off stations that are firing all batteries at you.) To keep it easy you can try to avoid them until you decide you want to explore a sector of a faction that isn't friendly to you. Don't befriend the xenon they aren't friendly they don't want to be friends. The kaak are going to have the same disposition as the the xenon. You cant explore planets on the surface but you can visit almost every station and even dock/ be picked up for a ride by friendly factions. To understand the lore though there is going to be alot on your end to do.. ( as in x4 doesn't explore a full on story experience as its a sandbox. Yes there are missions and some unlock things. But its not so linear. You can stop in the middle of missions to do others ( if they aren't timmed missions) and so on. As a result the story isn't the main aspect of the game. So lore is more in the other games/ wiki pages. Timelines dlc will explore some events of the past but still you won't find much without using wiki or reddit.

All in all, you can ignore / run from anyone shooting at you. But some factions that hate you have the possibility of taking power in other sectors. As in killing friendly factions. PROTECT THE BORON they're good space buddies.

My jaw dropped when i saw that i can walk on capital ships WHILE they are getting attacked, seeing the battle from aboard. It's really epic.
The game has flaws, sure, but no other game can offer this experience.

Excellent game! I've had it since 2021 and unfortunately life kept getting in the way of me really buckling down and learning. Now im finally engulfed. And it comes at a time when I've transitiomed from being an engineer to a business owner. I find that it reinfoces business thinking. I actually have it up playing while I work. And that's another cool thing about it. You can sit and let it run if you have things setup well and just jump in when you have time or need to resolve and issue.
If you stresm X4 you've got a new sub.

I got it early this year and it took a while to wrap my head around it, but the Terran assisted start with the narrative focus for newbies helped. Only got 40 hours in before getting distracted by other games; need to get back to it sometime.

On my save, I'm friendly with teladi, Argon, split, and windfall factions.
Terrans at war with Arg ANT, and paranids at war with EVERYONE. after completing multiple major missions. My universe is absolutely insane, massive fleet battles everywhere.
My main stations are all in 3 silent witnes, and president's end. Almost 2k hours in save. You can accidentally make your universe passive with mission choices.
