  • The relational hierarchy in Plantation Capitalism in the U.S. resembles Confucian hierarchy in East Asian countries. That alone should make us stop and think and reconsider.
Hayley and Mako make the case for the egalitarian vision for women in church leadership. We look at what "headship" meant in the Corinthians worship service, when both men and women prayed and prophesied. They represented Jesus as head of the church, because they became a representative of his, as a source of authoritative words to the body.
We also make the case that Paul envisioned women as leaders in the church. We answer the tough questions. Why does Paul say, "I do not permit a woman/wife to teach or exercise authority over a man/husband" (1 Timothy 2:11 - 15)? And why did Paul seem to say that elders were men (1 Timothy 3). What is the egalitarian case for women in church leadership from 1 Timothy?

Paper: "Women Speaking Authoritatively in the Worship Service in 1 Corinthians 11". This passage indicates that women and men preaching and praying was a standard practice in the earliest congregations. It was established before Paul. This means that the embodied practice of headship including women preaching authoritatively. I argue that this unique Christian worship context controlled the meaning of the word head (Greek kephale). It is therefore a mistake for Protestants to claim 'sola Scriptura' in such a way that scholars look for the meaning of kephale from the Septuagint Old Testament of the Greek usage outside the New Testament. That method does not account for the hermeneutical priority of 1 Corinthians 11.
Paper: "The Implications of the Chiastic Structure of 1 Timothy on the Question of Women in Church Leadership". This argument for the entirety of 1 Timothy being a chiasm means that the "widows" of ch.5 correspond to the "elders" of ch.3. The paper also discusses why the Greek word authentein in 2:12 means "immoral authority" versus the standard Greek word for legitimate and proper authority, exousia. The reason Paul did not allow wives to teach and exercise immoral authority over their husbands in 1 Timothy 2:11 - 15 was because of his central concern in confronting the Hellenistic influence of Ephesus: the Stoic rejection of the body, marriage, and creation in 1 Timothy 4:3. The entirety of 1 Timothy is shown to support women in church leadership and preaching-teaching authority.

Why can't study Bibles print chiasm outlines istead of Western-minded outlines?

So good! United Pentecostals teach that women should never cut their hair. I've heard someone say that makes their prayers more powerful.😮
